[Termes IGN] trajet multipleRésumé : (Editeur) This article presents a smartphone-based system that uses the GNSS signal 'shadows' cast by buildings - usually the satellite-signal blocking bane of navigating in narrow urban canyons - to improve the accuracy of street-level positioning. The authors present the results of field tests that reveal dramatic reduction of positioning errors and improved availability. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last fifty years, worldwide city shrinkage has become an increasingly common phenomenon. How to deal with the shrinking issue, and any problems caused by its chain effects, still remains a challenge for researchers from various disciplines. In this paper, Japan’s shrinking phenomena is analyzed based on a case study of Katsuura City. Changes in land use, population, industry, and residential preferences are detected through an analysis of census data, land-use maps and questionnaire surveys. On the basis of this analysis, a simulation model consisting of a land-use change model generated by rent-gap theory-based cellular automata combined with a residential migration decision model based on a multinomial logit model is built to project the current pattern of shrinkage in the case study area, and in order to compare various policy scenarios. [Termes IGN] zoomRésumé : (Auteur) In the context of the development of web and mobile map applications with capabilities for map generalisation and abstraction, we propose a methodology for spatial information exploration that uses a technique that we term content zooming to change the degree of abstraction of map content independently of the map scale. Content zooming allows overriding the effects of ‘standard’ map generalisation, focusing on optimised content representation to aid the information seeking task of a mobile user. It is thus complementary to map generalisation. The paper defines content zooming operations and proposes technical solutions for each of these, illustrating them with examples from a research prototype. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Fast-Responder is a data dissemination concept and research prototype designed to meet the needs of first responders to access recent remote sensing information for disaster response. It achieves fast performance by unique system trade-offs centered on a core concept called Fast-Earth, a geospatially-organized cache. Whereas traditional databases store images by collection time, requiring long searches and slow downloads, Fast-Earth subdivides the earth into small regions called plats affixed size enabling rapid look-up and download. Recent data can be indexed rapidly in about 10 minutes/terabyte. With the mobile application, FastResponder, Smartphone users can use a rapid Fast-Earth look-up to discover layers of data, download small chips, and flicker multiple image layers in less than a minute. Our fast rubble detection algorithm applied at the server enhances mono-temporal post-event optical imagery in less than one second/plat. We demonstrate the end-to-end system with remote sensing data from the 2010 Haiti earthquake. [Termes IGN] téléphone intelligentRésumé : (Editeur) [...] What are we to do if we wish to obtain consistently usable positions indoors using a mobile phone? As we will see in this month's column, we can augment or bypass its GPS or GNSS receiver with other unfettered sensing technologies such as gyroscopes and accelerometers. These devices can be made very small using microelectromechanical technology and are already included in some mobile phones. However, there are some issues with these devices for positioning, not the least of which is rapid position drift. We can restrain the drift by using magnetometers, for example - also present in some mobile phones. We can also use radio signals of opportunity to help in the positioning - signals available in the phone such as multi-generation mobile signals, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi through their signal strength "fingerprints." But is all of this actually feasible? The authors of the article in this month's column have conducted tests of such a multi-system approach to positioning indoors with quite favorable results. Are we at the stage of accurate positioning (and tracking) everywhere? Not quite, but we are getting closer.
