[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Since 1999, very high spatial resolution satellite data represent the surface of the Earth with more detail. However, information extraction by per pixel multispectral classification techniques proves to be very complex owing to the internal variability increase in land-cover units and to the weakness of spectral resolution. Image segmentation before classification was proposed as an alternative approach, but a large variety of segmentation algorithms were developed during the last 20 years, and a comparison of their implementation on very high spatial resolution images is necessary. In this study, four algorithms from the two main groups of segmentation algorithms (boundary-based and region-based) were evaluated and compared. In order to compare the algorithms, an evaluation of each algorithm was carried out with empirical discrepancy evaluation methods. This evaluation is carried out with a visual segmentation of Ikonos panchromatic images. The results show that the choice of parameters is very important and has a great influence on the segmentation results. The selected boundary-based algorithms are sensitive to the noise or texture. Better results are obtained with region-based algorithms, but a problem with the transition zones between the contrasted objects can be present. [Termes IGN] orientation du capteurRésumé : (Auteur) The demand for higher quality metric products from high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) is growing, and the number HRSI sensors and product options is increasing. There is a greater need to fully understand the potential and indeed shortcomings of alternative photogrammetric sensor orientation models for HRSI. To date, rational functions have proven to be a viable alternative model for geo-positioning, and with the recent innovation of bias-compensated RPC bundle-adjustment, it has been demonstrated that sensor orientation to subpixel level can be achieved with minimal ground-control. Questions have lingered, however, as to the general suitability of bias-compensated rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs), and indeed rational functions in general. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the wide applicability of bias-compensated RPCs for high accuracy geopositioning from stereo HRSI. The case of stereo imagery over mountainous, terrain will be specifically addressed, and results of experimental testing of both Ikonos and QuickBird imagery will be presented. [Termes IGN] site Natura 2000Résumé : (auteur) State-of-the-art Earth observation systems that provide very high spatial resolution imagery have given ecologists a powerful tool to directly identify species, habitats and other ecological units. At the same time, there is an urgent need for harmonised tools and methods to evaluate status and trends in European habitats. Towards that goal, the current work explores the applicability and transferability of an advanced pixel window classifier applied on very high spatial resolution satellite imagery for fine scale habitat mapping. The algorithm is tested on images of varying spatial resolutions acquired over test sites designated for the NATURA 2000 list located in different biogeographical zones. Algorithm application to Quickbird and IKONOS images gives encouraging results, regarding both the overall accuracies and the level of class hierarchy (habitats) identified.
