[Termes IGN] système de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) As a model for sensor orientation and 3D geopositioning for high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI), the affine transformation from object to image space has obvious advantages. Chief among these is that it is a straightforward linear model, comprising only eight parameters, which has been shown to yield sub-pixel geopositioning accuracy when applied to Ikonos stereo imagery. This paper aims to provide further insight into the affine model in order to understand why it performs as well as it does. Initially, the model is compared to counterpart, 'rigorous' affine transformation formulations which account for the conversion from a central perspective to affine image. Examination of these rigorous models sheds light on issues such as the effects of terrain and size of area, as well as upon the choice of reference coordinate system and the impact of the adopted scanning mode of the sensor. The results of application of the affine sensor orientation model to four multi-image Ikonos test field configurations are then presented. These illustrate the very high geopositioning accuracy attainable with the affine model, and illustrate that the model is not affected by size of area, but can be influenced to a modest extent by mountainous terrain, the mode of scanning and the choice of object space coordinate system. Above all, the affine model is shown to be both a robust and practical sensor orientation/triangulation model with high metric potential. [Termes IGN] SIG nomadeRésumé : (Auteur) In countries like Morocco, the level of development and lack of funds and data often impede collecting and updating geo-data. Given these conditions, which are methods most suited to arriving at geo-data of appropriate quality whilst costs, time and means are kept whithin limits ? The authors show that mobile GIS in combination with very high-resolution satellite (Ikonos) imagery is able to provide results of sufficient accuracy in a cost-effective and time-efficient way. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) A digital elevation model (DEM) extracted from Ikonos in-track stereo images using a 3D physical model developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada was evaluated. First, the stereo photogrammetric bundle adjustment was set up with about ten accurate ground control points. The DEM was then generated using an area-based multiscale image matching method and 3D semiautomatic editing tools and then compared to lidar elevation data with a 0.2-m accuracy. Because the DEM is, in fact, a digital terrain surface model where the height of land cover (trees, houses) is included, the accuracy varies depending on land cover types. Using 3D visual classification of the stereo Ikonos images, different classes (forests, residential, bare soil, lakes) were generated to take into account the height of the surface (natural and human-made) in the accuracy evaluation. An elevation linear error with 68 percent confidence level (LE68) of 1.5 m was obtained for bare surfaces while an LE68 of 6.4 m was achieved over the full area. Five-meter contour lines could thus be derived, compliant with the highest topographic standard. Better results could thus be expected when using stereo-images acquired in the summertime. On the other hand, an LE68 of 2.5 m to 6.6 m was obtained depending on the land-cover type and its surface height. For residential areas, the surface height did not affect the errors very much (2.5-m LE68) when compared to bare surface results because one- and two-story houses were sparse in the test area. Because the images were unfortunately acquired in wintertime and the lidar data in summertime, elevation errors (LE68 and bias) also depended on the type of forest (deciduous, coniferous, mixed, sparse). An evaluation based on terrain slope and azimuth showed that the DEM error was linearly correlated with slope and that elevations on sun-facing slopes were 1-m more accurate than elevations on slopes facing away from the sun. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Efficient identification of forest age is useful for forest management and ecological applications. Here, we propose a user-assisted method for determining forest age using high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery. This method requires individual trees to be extracted from imagery and represented as points. We use a local maximum filter to generate points that are converted to Voronoi polygons. Properties of the Voronoi polygons are correlated with forest age and used to aggregate points (trees) into areas (stands) based on three forest age classes. Accuracy of the aggregation ranges from approximately 68% to 78% and identification of the mature class is more consistent and accurate than the younger classes.
