[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The aims of this study were to determine surface urban heat island (SUHI) effects and to analyze the land use/land cover (LULC) and land surface temperature (LST) changes for 11 time periods from the years 2002 to 2020 using Landsat time series images. Bursa, which is the fourth largest metropolitan city in Turkey, was selected as the study area, and Landsat multi-temporal images of the summer season were used. Firstly, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) and index-based built-up index (IBI) were created using the bands of Landsat images, and LULC classes were determined by applying automatic thresholding. The LST values were calculated using thermal images and SUHI effects were determined. The results show that NDVI, SAVI, MNDWI and IBI indices can be used effectively for the determination of the urban, vegetation and water LULC classes for SUHI studies, with overall classification accuracies between 89.60% and 95.90% for the used images. According to the obtained results, generally the LST values increased for almost all land cover areas between the years 2002 and 2020. The SUHI magnitudes were computed by using two methods, and it was found that there was an important increase in the 18-year time period. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) This paper focuses on urban green spaces in terms of climate and human thermal comfort containing their effect on heat load mitigation. It incorporates a modelling study in which the role of green spaces was investigated in terms of heat stress modification by applying MUKLIMO_3 model. During the experiment, the thermal effects of dense trees, scattered trees, grasslands and mixed green infrastructure has been investigated in the case of Szeged (Hungary) and assessed using different climate indices. The investigations encompassed 3 climatological time periods (1981–2010, 2021–2050 and 2071–2100) and two emission scenarios for future climate (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). It was found that urban green spaces (e.g. parks) generally cool the environment, although, the cooling potential of the different green types differs. The highest reduction of heat load was found in the case of large urban parks comprising of dense trees near the downtown. The spatial extension of detected cooling was found small. However, it would increase during the future, especially in the case of grasslands. For urban planners, it is highly recommended to introduce new green sites within a city and to increase the spatial extension of the existing ones to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change in the urban environment. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) This article explores using satellite images to monitor spatiotemporal variations in temperature related to urban form. Land surface temperatures (LST) were estimated from Landsat images (1986–2016) and the land cover and urban form LST were extracted by using samples representing different urban forms/cover types. A transect of 20 km was taken across the city to derive the LST across the different land cover types. Urban heat island index and statistical analysis were carried out to understand the influence of urban form and cover on changes in surface temperature. The results are compared with temperature regimes of an industrial city (Yanbu) to depict differences in the two cities. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows variations, at 0.01 level of significance, in the LST values of the city centre, high-rise, low-density, vegetation, desert and industrial land-use types. The outcome of the study is valuable for decision-makers in achieving sustainable urban development. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) An urban heat island (UHI) is a significant anthropogenic modification of urban land surfaces, and its geospatial pattern can increase the intensity of the heatwave effects. The complex mechanisms and interactivity of the land surface temperature in urban areas are still being examined. The urban–rural gradient analysis serves as a unique natural opportunity to identify and mitigate ecological worsening. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Operational Land Imager/Thermal Infrared Sensor (OLI/TIRS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Land Surface Temperature (LST) data in 2000, 2010, and 2019, we examined the spatial difference in daytime and nighttime LST trends along the urban–rural gradient in Greater Cairo, Egypt. Google Earth Engine (GEE) and machine learning techniques were employed to conduct the spatio-temporal analysis. The analysis results revealed that impervious surfaces (ISs) increased significantly from 564.14 km2 in 2000 to 869.35 km2 in 2019 in Greater Cairo. The size, aggregation, and complexity of patches of ISs, green space (GS), and bare land (BL) showed a strong correlation with the mean LST. The average urban–rural difference in mean LST was −3.59 °C in the daytime and 2.33 °C in the nighttime. In the daytime, Greater Cairo displayed the cool island effect, but in the nighttime, it showed the urban heat island effect. We estimated that dynamic human activities based on the urban structure are causing the spatial difference in the LST distribution between the day and night. The urban–rural gradient analysis indicated that this phenomenon became stronger from 2000 to 2019. Considering the drastic changes in the spatial patterns and the density of IS, GS, and BL, urban planners are urged to take immediate steps to mitigate increasing surface UHI; otherwise, urban dwellers might suffer from the severe effects of heatwaves. [Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (Auteur) In a developing city, urban green space (UGS) plays an increasingly significant role in improving the urban environment and beautifying the urban landscape. In the meantime, UGS has been substantially and frequently interfered with by human activities. Taking Shenzhen city (a great metropolis of China) as an example, this study investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of UGS and its influence on the urban thermal environment with Landsat images. From 1978 to 2018, all croplands and more than 50% of water bodies disappeared, while the built-up area increased more than 6 times. The rapid expansion of impervious surface and loss of UGS led to the spread of a surface urban heat island. The study shows that UGS has a significantly mitigating impact on urban land surface temperature, with cold islands mainly located at city parks. The results will be of great significance for improving UGS management, alleviating the urban heat island effect, and establishing a sustainable eco-environment.
