[Termes IGN] qualité des eauxRésumé : (auteur) Constructing multi-source satellite-derived water quality (WQ) products in inland and nearshore coastal waters from the past, present, and future missions is a long-standing challenge. Despite inherent differences in sensors’ spectral capability, spatial sampling, and radiometric performance, research efforts focused on formulating, implementing, and validating universal WQ algorithms continue to evolve. This research extends a recently developed machine-learning (ML) model, i.e., Mixture Density Networks (MDNs) (Pahlevan et al., 2020; Smith et al., 2021), to the inverse problem of simultaneously retrieving WQ indicators, including chlorophyll-a (Chla), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and the absorption by Colored Dissolved Organic Matter at 440 nm (acdom(440)), across a wide array of aquatic ecosystems. We use a database of in situ measurements to train and optimize MDN models developed for the relevant spectral measurements (400–800 nm) of the Operational Land Imager (OLI), MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI), and Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) aboard the Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3 missions, respectively. Our two performance assessment approaches, namely hold-out and leave-one-out, suggest significant, albeit varying degrees of improvements with respect to second-best algorithms, depending on the sensor and WQ indicator (e.g., 68%, 75%, 117% improvements based on the hold-out method for Chla, TSS, and acdom(440), respectively from MSI-like spectra). Using these two assessment methods, we provide theoretical upper and lower bounds on model performance when evaluating similar and/or out-of-sample datasets. To evaluate multi-mission product consistency across broad spatial scales, map products are demonstrated for three near-concurrent OLI, MSI, and OLCI acquisitions. Overall, estimated TSS and acdom(440) from these three missions are consistent within the uncertainty of the model, but Chla maps from MSI and OLCI achieve greater accuracy than those from OLI. By applying two different atmospheric correction processors to OLI and MSI images, we also conduct matchup analyses to quantify the sensitivity of the MDN model and best-practice algorithms to uncertainties in reflectance products. Our model is less or equally sensitive to these uncertainties compared to other algorithms. Recognizing their uncertainties, MDN models can be applied as a global algorithm to enable harmonized retrievals of Chla, TSS, and acdom(440) in various aquatic ecosystems from multi-source satellite imagery. Local and/or regional ML models tuned with an apt data distribution (e.g., a subset of our dataset) should nevertheless be expected to outperform our global model. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study compared the traditional regression models and support vector machine (SVM) for estimation of aboveground biomass (ABG) of an agro-pastoral ecology using vegetation indices derived from Landsat 8 satellite data as explanatory variables . The area falls in the Shivpuri Tehsil of Madhya Pradesh, India, which is predominantly a semi-arid tract of the Bundelkhand region. The Enhanced Vegetation Index-1 (EVI-1) was identified as the most suitable input variable for the regression models, although the collective effect of a number of the vegetation indices was evident. The EVI-1 was also the most suitable input variable to SVM, due to its capacity to distinctly differentiate diverse vegetation classes. The performance of SVM was better over regression models for estimation of the AGB. Based on the SVM-derived and the ground observations, the AGB of the area was precisely mapped for croplands, grassland and rangelands over the entire region. [Termes IGN] prévention des risquesRésumé : (auteur) Despite the fact that wildland fires have always been an integral part of many ecosystems, their increased frequency and intensity have reinforced the need of fire managers for updated and highly accurate information associated with the spatial distribution of forest fuels. In 2015, a fuel type mapping method was developed in the framework of the “National Observatory of Forest Fires (NOFFi)” project resulting in the generation of a national fuel type map. In this study, we aimed at examining the potential of the newly available Sentinel-2 satellite images for the improvement of the NOFFi’s mapping method in terms of accuracy and update effectiveness of the national fuel type map. Results demonstrate Sentinel-2 data will likely improve the resolution and reliability of national fuel type maps, increasing mapping efficiency for operational purposes. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) This study aimed to simulate and assess forest cover and land use/land cover (LULC) changes between 2019 and 2039 using the cellular automata-Markov model. The performance of the model was evaluated by comparing the 2019 simulation map with the 2019 supervised classified map, and it was found to be reliable, with a similarity rate of 85.43%. The LULC analysis and estimates were carried out for a total of six classes: coniferous, broad-leaf, mixed forest, settlement, water and agriculture. Between 1999 and 2019, the areas of total forest increased by 17.4%, settlement by 84.6% and water by 20.1%, whereas the agriculture area decreased by 33.2%. According to 2019‒2039 land use/cover simulation results, there were decreases of 2.4% in total forest area and 3.7% in residential and water surface areas, but a 6.9% decrease in the agriculture class. Tracking these changes will contribute to decision making and strategy development efforts of forest planners and managers. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Forest disturbance monitoring is critical for understanding forest-related greenhouse gas emissions and for determining the role of forest management in mitigating climate change. Multiple algorithms for the automated mapping of forest disturbance using remotely sensed imagery have been developed and applied; however, variability in natural and anthropogenic disturbance phenomena, as well as image acquisition conditions, can result in maps that may be incomplete or that contain inaccuracies that prevent their use for directly estimating areas of disturbance. To reduce errors in reporting disturbance areas, stratified estimators can be applied to obtain statistically robust area estimates, while simultaneously circumventing the need to conduct a complete census or in situations where such a census may not be possible. We present a semi-automated procedure for implementation in Google Earth Engine, 3I3D-GEE, for regional to global mapping of forest disturbance (including clear-cut harvesting, fire, and wind damage) and sample-based estimation of related areas using data from the processing capacity of Google Earth Engine. Documentation for the application is also provided in Appendix A. Using Sentinel-2 (S2) imagery, our procedure was applied and tested for 2018 in Italy for which the approximately 11 million ha of forests (mostly Q. pubescens, Q. robur, Q. cerris, Q. petraea, and Fagus sylvatica) serve as an appropriate case study because national statistics on forest disturbance areas are not available. To decrease the overall standard errors of the area estimates, the sampling intensities in areas where greater variability in the form of greater commission and omission errors are expected can be increased. To this end, we augmented the predicted forest disturbance map with a buffer class consisting of a two-pixel buffer (20 m) on each side of the disturbance class boundary. We selected a reference sample of 19,300 points: a simple random sample of 9,300 points from the buffer and simple random samples of 5000 from each of the undisturbed and disturbed classes. The reference sample was photointerpreted using fine resolution orthophotos (30 cm) and S2 imagery. While the estimate of the disturbed area obtained by adding the areas of pixels classified as disturbed was 41,732 ha, the estimate obtained using the unbiased stratified estimator was 27% greater at 57,717716 ha. Regarding map accuracy, we found several omission errors in the buffer (53.4%) but none (0%) in the undisturbed map class. Similarly, among the 1035 commission errors, the majority (7 4 4) were in the buffer class. The methods presented herein provide a useful tool that can be used to estimate areas of forest disturbance, which many nations must report as part of their commitment to international conventions and treaties. In addition, the information generated can support forest management, enabling the forest sector to monitor stand-replacing forest harvesting over space and time.
