[Termes IGN] Medium Resolution Imaging SpectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) At the begining of march, the European Space Agency (ESA) is scheduled to have its new polar-orbiting satellite, Envisat, launched from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guyana using the powerful Ariane-5 rocket. Given the satellite's huge size (10m in heigh) weight (8,5 tons) and cost ($2,3 billion) and the large battery of imagers and other sensors that have been mounted on it, this is probably the single most important Earth observation project that has ever been undertaken by ESA.. Indeed one can hardly contemplate the consequences for the Agency should there be a launch failure or a situation where the satellite cannot be operate fully. Not only have many of the current hopes of ESA been invested in Envisat, but so are the hopes of the large numbers of scientists who have signed up to use the data that will be generated by the satellite's imagers and other instruments. Indeed its importance within the scientific segment of the European space remote sensing community can hardly be over emphasized - especially for those involved in various different aspects concerning the monitoring of the environment on a global scale. [Termes IGN] télédétection électromagnétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In spite of recent optimistic growth prognoses, the commercial success of earth observation is hindered primarily by the inability of satellite operators to generate and consequently to deliver in time the requested products and services to the customer. This however, is vital for th establishment of any kind of service. a potential customer will only change his internal procedures and infrastucture if the avaibility of the alternative products is guaranteed. Consequently, a commercially operated system must aim primarily at offering guaranteed avaibility of information. A satisfactory avaibility of information on large areas of interest when using optical sensors can only be achieved by minimizing the time between the individual revisits and providing sufficient capacity. This understanding led to the definition of the RapidEye concept and the RapidEye imaging system. [Termes IGN] StrasbourgRésumé : (Auteur) With the diversity of new digital geographic information products and in particular, the new future Very High Spatial Resolution images (1 to 5 m), an evaluation of the capacity of these new data source is necessary in the framework of urban studies. This article aims at assessing the utility of VHSR sensors to provide reliable and useful information for the end-users (city councils, urban community, county) in urban planning, monitoring and management. In fact, which type of end-users must these resolution satisfy, what are the potential applications of these images, what are the characteristics of the information required and finally what type of extraction methods are efficient ? An analysis of these capacities has been carried out for different resolutions and with several extraction methods. This analysis allows on the one hand, to define a " minimal " and a " functional " spatial resolution able to satisfy the needs of end-users, and on the other hand, to determine if this future sensors would provide additional capabilities to study the urban environment.
