[Termes IGN] primitive géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Image matching is a critical process in photogrammetry and remote sensing. Automatic and reliable feature matching using well-distributed points in very high resolution images is a difficult task due to significant relief displacement caused by tall buildings and ground relief. In this paper a robust and efficient image-matching approach is proposed, consisting of two main steps. In the first step, three sets of local features – Harris points, UR-SIFT and MSER – are extracted over the entire image. A SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) descriptor is then created for each extracted feature, and an initial cross-matching verification is performed using the Euclidean distance between feature descriptors. In the second step, an approach based on k-means clustering is performed to achieve accurate matching without mismatched features, followed by a consistency check using a local affine transformation model for each cluster. The proposed method is successfully applied to matching various aerial and satellite images and the results demonstrate its robustness and capability. [Termes IGN] Quercus ilexRésumé : (auteur) Forest biomass has had a growing importance in the world economy as a global strategic reserve, due to applications in bioenergy, bioproduct development and issues related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Current techniques used for forest inventory are usually time consuming and expensive. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop reliable, low cost methods that can be used for forest biomass estimation and monitoring. This study uses new techniques to process high spatial resolution satellite images (0.70 m) in order to assess and monitor forest biomass. Multi-resolution segmentation method and object oriented classification are used to obtain the area of tree canopy horizontal projection for Quercus rotundifolia. Forest inventory allows for calculation of tree and canopy horizontal projection and biomass, the latter with allometric functions. The two data sets are used to develop linear functions to assess above ground biomass, with crown horizontal projection as an independent variable. The functions for the cumulative values, both for inventory and satellite data, for a prediction error equal or smaller than the Portuguese national forest inventory (7%), correspond to stand areas of 0.5 ha, which include most of the Q.rotundifolia stands. [Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The advancement of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology with high-resolution and quad-polarization data demands better and efficient polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) speckle-filtering algorithms. Two requirements on PolSAR speckle filtering are proposed: 1) speckle filtering should be applied to distributed media only, and strong hard targets should be kept unfiltered; and 2) scattering mechanism preservation should be taken into consideration, in addition to speckle reduction. The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to propose an effective algorithm that is an extension of the improved sigma filter developed for single-polarization SAR; and 2) to investigate speckle characteristics and the need for speckle filtering for very high resolution (decimeter) PolSAR data. The proposed filter was specifically developed to account for the aforementioned two requirements. Its effectiveness is demonstrated with Jet Propulsion Laboratory airborne synthetic aperture radar data, and comparisons are made with a boxcar filter, the refined Lee filter, and a Wishart-based nonlocal filter. For very high resolution PolSAR systems, such as the German Aerospace Center F-SAR and Japanese Pi-SAR2, with decimeter spatial resolution, we found that the complex Wishart distribution is still valid to describe PolSAR speckle characteristics of distributed media and that speckle filtering may be needed depending on the size of objects to be analyzed. F-SAR X-band data with 25-cm resolution is used for illustration. [Termes IGN] TrenteRésumé : (auteur) Today the use of spaceborne Very High Resolution (VHR) optical sensors for automatic 3D information extraction is increasing in the scientific and civil communities. The 3D Optical Metrology (3DOM) unit of the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) in Trento (Italy) has collected VHR satellite imagery, as well as aerial and terrestrial data over Trento for creating a complete testfield for investigations on image radiometry, geometric accuracy, automatic digital surface model (DSM) generation, 2D/3D feature extraction, city modelling and data fusion. This paper addresses the radiometric and the geometric aspects of the VHR spaceborne imagery included in the Trento testfield and their potential for 3D information extraction. The dataset consist of two stereo-pairs acquired by WorldView-2 and by GeoEye-1 in panchromatic and multispectral mode, and a triplet from Pléiades-1A. For reference and validation, a DSM from airborne LiDAR acquisition is used. The paper gives details on the project, dataset characteristics and achieved results. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Segmentation of real-world remote sensing images is challenging because of the large size of those data, particularly for very high resolution imagery. However, a lot of high-level remote sensing methods rely on segmentation at some point and are therefore difficult to assess at full image scale, for real remote sensing applications. In this paper, we define a new property called stability of segmentation algorithms and demonstrate that piece- or tile-wise computation of a stable segmentation algorithm can be achieved with identical results with respect to processing the whole image at once. We also derive a technique to empirically estimate the stability of a given segmentation algorithm and apply it to four different algorithms. Among those algorithms, the mean-shift algorithm is found to be quite unstable. We propose a modified version of this algorithm enforcing its stability and thus allowing for tile-wise computation with identical results. Finally, we present results of this method and discuss the various trends and applications.
