[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (auteur) Submetric satellite imagery (Pleiades, GeoEye) offers advantages for map update purposes, e.g. an interesting ground resolution, a good reactivity and the ability to capture wide areas. Experiments on the use of such stereoscopic images for 2D change detection among building objects of GIS topographic database are presented in this paper. Two approaches have been tested. The first one extracts land cover from satellite ortho-images and additional information (correlation DSM-DTM, database) and compares building objects of this classification to those of the database. The second one creates a pseudo-DSM from height information of database building objects combined with a DTM and compares it to a correlation DSM computed from satellite images. Obtained results are quite encouraging even if the correctness rate remains too low for an operational use. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) Adobe (sun-dried earth material) is a common prehistoric building material that had been widely used for several thousand years mainly in arid and semi-arid lands where generally other building materials are quite scarce. In particular, the earthen construction materials have a long history in Southern America and in the Andean prehistory of the Peruvian coast, where the hyper-arid climate has promoted an excellent preservation of archaeological adobe remains. The detection of buried earthen structures is particularly complex to perform due to the subtle contrast between the archaeological features and the surrounding areas. The use of Earth Observation (EO) to detect and document buried archaeological adobe structures can open new perspective but up to now it presents one of the major challenges to archaeological investigation. In this paper we present our preliminary results obtained from the assessment of the potentiality of satellite Very High Resolution (VHR) optical imagery and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in detecting adobe archaeological setting. Satellite VHR imagery and GPR have been used for three significant test sites selected inside the Cahuachi Ceremonial Centre of the Nasca culture (Southern Peru) one of the most important archaeological area of ancient Peru. It is a remarkable example of adobe architecture in Southern America. The spatial extension of the archaeological site has been estimated as large as 25 square km, and this makes the Ceremonial Centre of Cahuachi the biggest in the world and gives a clear idea of the importance of the Nasca civilization. Results obtained from our experimental analysis pointed out the high potentiality of both satellite VHR and GPR when applied to detect, investigate, and document earthen archaeological remain. [Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of the third dimension from remote sensing data is a well known technique. Since in a number of countries aerial images and laser scanner data are unavailable, expensive or classified, stereoscopic high-resolution optical satellite images provide a viable alternative for generating digital surface and digital terrain models. Especially the automatic extraction of highly accurate 3D surface models in urban areas is still a very complicated task due to occlusions, large differences in height and the variety of objects and surface material. In this paper, an analysis and a visual and quantitative comparison of three different matching algorithms for generating urban DSMs based on very high-resolution satellite images is presented. The three algorithms are least squares matching (lsm) in a region growing fashion, dynamic programming (DP) and semiglobal matching (sgm). The characteristics of the three algorithms as applied to four different Ikonos stereo pairs with a ground sampling distance of 1 m are shown. The following results were obtained: visually, in the lsm results the shape of the buildings is considerably smoothed. While in the DP results the building shape is sharper, only little detail is visible on the building roofs, and streaking along the epipolar lines causes problems. With SGM, more details can be extracted and the results visually have the best quality. Based on reference data for the different test sites, the standard deviation of the building heights determined by LSM and DP is in the range of one pixel or slightly better, while it is in the range of half a pixel for SGM.
