[Termes IGN] limite de résolution géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the performance limit of remote sensing systems, multispectral images have limited spatial resolution. Their spatial resolution can be improved by merging them with higher resolution image data. A fundamental problem frequently occurring in existing fusion processes, however, is the distortion of spectral information. This paper presents a spatially adaptive image fusion algorithm which produces visually natural images and retains the quality of local spectral information as well. High frequency information of the high resolution image to be inserted to the resampled multispectral images is controlled by adaptive gains to incorporate the difference of local spectral characteristics between the high and the low resolution images into the fusion. Each gain is estimated to minimize the 12-norm of the error between the original and the estimated pixel values defined in a spatially adaptive window of which the weights are proportional to the spectral correlation measurements of the corresponding regions. This method is applied to a set of co-registered Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM)+ panchromatic and multispectral image data. The experimental results show that high resolution images can be synthesized by the proposed method, which successfully preserves spectral content of the multispectral images. [Termes IGN] réflectivitéRésumé : (Auteur) The Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) has been and continues to be radiometrically characterized using the Image Assessment System (IAS), a component of the Landsat-7 Ground System. Key radiometric properties analyzed include: overall, coherent, and impulse noise; bias stability; relative gain stability; and other artifacts. The overall instrument noise is characterized across the dynamic range of the instrument during solar diffuser deployments. Less than 1% per year increases are observed in signal-independent (dark) noise levels, while signal-dependent noise is stable with time. Several coherent noise sources exist in ETM+ data with scene-averaged magnitudes of up to 0.4 DN, and a noise component at 20 kHz whose magnitude varies across the scan and peaks at the image edges. Bit-flip noise does not exist on the ETM+. However, impulse noise due to charged particle hits on the detector array has been discovered. The instrument bias is measured every scan line using a shutter. Most bands show less than 0.1 DN variations in bias across the instrument lifetime. The panchromatic band is the exception, where the variation approaches 2 DN and is related primarily to temperature. The relative gains of the detectors, i.e., each detector's gain relative to the band average gain, have been stable to + 0. 1 % over the mission life. Two exceptions to this stability include band 2 detector 2, which dropped about 1% in gain about 3.5 years after launch and stabilized, and band 7 detector 5, which has changed several tenths of a percent several times since launch. Memory effect and scan-correlated shift, a hysteresis and a random change in bias between multiple states, respectively, both of which have been observed in previous Thematic Mapper sensors, have not been convincingly found in ETM+ data. Two artifacts, detector ringing and "oversaturation," affect a small amount of ETM+ data. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyses and maps the spatial distribution of soil moisture using remote sensing: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat-Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) images. The study was carried out in the central Ebro river valley (northeast Spain), and examines the spatial relationships between the distribution of soil moisture and several meteorological and geographical variables following a long, intense dry period (winter 2000). Soil moisture estimates were obtained using thermal, visible and near-infrared data and by applying the 'triangle method', which describes relationships between surface temperature (Ts) and fractional vegetation cover (Fr). Low differences were found between the soil moisture estimates obtained using AVHRR and ETM+ sensors. Soil moisture estimated using remote sensing is close to estimations obtained from climate indices. This fact, and the high similarity between estimations of both sensors, suggests the reasonable reliability of soil moisture remote sensing estimations. Moreover, in estimations from both sensors the spatial distribution of soil moisture was largely accounted for by meteorological variables, mainly precipitation in the dry period. The results indicate the high reliability of remote sensing for determining areas affected by water deficits and for quantifying drought intensity. [Termes IGN] spatiotriangulationRésumé : (Auteur) The objectives of this research study was to evaluate the spatiotriangulation applied to multisensor satellite images, which enabled the simultaneous geometric processing of a large number of images and strips together to reduce the control point requirement. The spatiotriangulation is based on the three-dimensional physical models developed for multisensor images at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada and on a least squares block bundle adjustment process with orbital constraints. The spatiotriangulation was applied to 49 images in six blocks (Landsat-7 ETM+, panchromatic SPOT-4 HRV, multiband ASTER, multimode radar RADARSAT-1, and ERS-1) acquired over the Rocky Mountains, Canada, from different viewing/look angles. The first results of least squares block bundle adjustments showed that the same error residuals (around 20 m) were obtained with the different image blocks whether independently or simultaneously processed. In addition to ground control points (GCPs), elevation tie points (ETPs), with a known elevation value, instead of normal tie points were used in the overlaps because the viewing/look-angle differences of overlapping images were generally small (8°). The second and most important results were related to simultaneous bundle adjustments of the largest "master" Landsat-7 block (600 km x 500 km) using 25 GCPs in the two outer strips and the smallest "slave" block(s) using no GCP but only ETPs. The errors, verified by a large number of independent check points (ICPs) in the "slave" blocks, were between 15-35 m (1.5-2 resolutions), depending on the "slave" block. However, the combined image pointing and map errors of ICPs (25-30 m) are included in these 15-35-m error results, and the internal accuracy of the blocks should, thus, be better (around one resolution). The research study demonstrated, thus, the possibility to use the largest block with a reduced number of GCPs to simultaneously adjust single image(s)/strip(s) or smallest block(s) with only ETPs, and with no degradation in the accuracy. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Cette étude propose une analyse de l'utilisation des images multispectrales ASTER et LANDSAT ETM en vue d'une cartographie de l'occupation du sol d'un bassin versant au Liban. Elle vise à évaluer les performances et les limitations d'une méthode de classification objet par rapport à une méthode de classification par pixel selon l'algorithme du maximum de vraisemblance. Elle traite non seulement des principaux aspects de la classification objet et de l'incorporation de la notion d'entités homogène, mais elle aborde également la question des classificateurs flous et du principe de segmentation de l'image en entités homogènes préalable à l'opération de classification. En comparaison avec les résultats de classifications obtenus sur l'image Landsat ETM et en considérant les deux méthodes appliquées (classification objet et classification pixel), l'amélioration de la précision moyenne d'environ 15,3% induite par l'utilisation de l'image ASTER, est révélatrice de la meilleure adéquation de ce type d'image à la classification de l'occupation du sol. De même, le coefficient Kappa montre la supériorité de l'image ASTER et de la classification objet par rapport à l'image Landsat et à la classification pixel par pixel (0,86 pour ASTER et 0,68 pour Landsat selon la classification objet contre 0,71 et 0,60 respectivement selon la classification par pixel), malgré les limitations et les difficultés propres à la technique objet adoptée.
