[Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) Focused on the Okavango Delta, Botswana, this research investigates (a) whether ecosystem signals derived from remotely sensed imagery can be decomposed using a harmonic regression, (b) if the deviations from the decomposed signal are correlated with observed flooding and fire regimes, and (c) the impact of explicitly including agriculture, settlement areas, and land management systems on the derived signals. A time-series of 85 TM/ETM+ scenes spanning the period from 1989 through 2002 was used to decompose derived landscape dynamics into trends, annual and seasonal cycles, and long term oscillations. The harmonic fit largely defined by climatic periodicities (semi-annual, annual, and quasi-decadal) accounted for 63 percent to 88 percent of the variance in the trajectories. The trends were found to be robust whether or not urban settlement or landscape management regimes were explicitly included, though there was a reversal of trend in agricultural areas. [Termes IGN] système immunitaire artificielRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the potential of an artificial immune-based supervised classification algorithm for land-cover classification. This classifier is inspired by the human immune system and possesses properties similar to nonlinear classification, self/non-self identification, and negative selection. Landsat ETM+ data of an area lying in Eastern England near the town of Littleport are used to study the performance of the artificial immune-based classifier. A univariate decision tree and maximum likelihood classifier were used to compare its performance in terms of classification accuracy and computational cost. Results suggest that the artificial immune-based classifier works well in comparison with the maximum likelihood and the decision-tree classifiers in terms of classification accuracy. The computational cost using artificial immune based classifier is more than the decision tree but less than the maximum likelihood classifier. Another data set from an area in Spain is also used to compare the performance of immune based supervised classifier with maximum likelihood and decision-tree classification algorithms. Results suggest an improved performance with the immune-based classifier in terms of classification accuracy with this data set, too. The design of an artificial immune-based supervised classifier requires several user-defined parameters to be set, so this work is extended to study the effect of varying the values of six parameters on classification accuracy. Finally, a comparison with a backpropagation neural network suggests that the neural network classifier provides higher classification accuracies with both data sets, but the results are not statistically significant. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important biophysical variable for characterizing the land surface vegetation. Global LAI product has been routinely produced from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. However, the MODIS standard LAI product is not continuous both spatially and temporally. To fill the gaps and improve the quality, we have developed a data filtering algorithm. This filter, called the temporal spatial filter (TSF), integrates both spatial and temporal characteristics for different plant functional types. The spatial gaps are first filled with the multi-year averages of the same day. If the values are missing over all years, the pixel is filled with a new estimate using the vegetation continuous field–ecosystem curve fitting method. The TSF integrates both the multi-seasonal average trend (background) and the seasonal observation. We implement this algorithm using the MODIS Collection 4 LAI product over North America. Comparison of the TSF results with the Savitzky–Golay filter indicates that the TSF performs much better in restoring the spatial and temporal distribution of seasonal LAI trends. The new LAI product has been validated by comparing with field measurements and the derived LAI maps from ETM+ data at a broadleaf forest site and an agricultural site. The validation results indicate that the new LAI product agrees better with both the field measurements and LAI values obtained from the ETM+ than does the MODIS LAI standard product, which usually shows higher LAI values. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) Tokat province is one of the least studied areas in Turkey. Updated spatial information about ferrous minerals (FM) and iron oxide (IO) is often required for studies focusing on environmental modelling, agriculture, and mining. In this study, FM and IO attributes of the province were assessed and mapped by evaluating Landsat-ETM+ satellite images. To avoid incorrect interpretations, dense plant or closed forest areas were determined using the normalized difference vegetative index, and excluded from the evaluation by masking. FM and IO index maps were produced using related algorithms and remote sensing tools. Classification and spatial analysis operations were conducted under the framework of Geographic Information Systems. A natural breaks method was employed for classification, and both indices were summarized in nine classes. The relationship between two index maps was investigated using a bi-variety correlation analysis. The correlation between two index maps (0.549) was found to be significant at the 1% level. Developed index maps were tested using ancillary data from previous studies in the area. The results were summarized at the administrative district level.
