[Termes IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of this study is to estimate long-term SMC and find its relation with soil moisture (SM) of climate station in different depths and NDVI for the growing season. The study area is located in agricultural regions in the North of Mongolia. The Pearson’s correlation methodology was used in this study. We used MODIS and SPOT satellite data and 14 years data for precipitation, temperature and SMC of 38 climate stations. The estimated SMC from this methodology were compared with SM from climate data and NDVI. The estimated SMC was compared with SM of climate stations at a 10-cm depth (r2 = 0.58) and at a 50-cm depth (r2 = 0.38), respectively. From the analysis, it can be seen that the previous month’s SMC affects vegetation growth of the following month, especially from May to August. The methodology can be an advantageous indicator for taking further environmental analysis in the region. [Termes IGN] SénégalRésumé : (auteur) The sensitivity of the radar signal to the seasonal dynamics in the Sahel region is a considerable asset for monitoring surface parameters including soil moisture. Given the sensitivity of the radar signal to vegetation mass production, roughness and soil moisture, the main problem has been to estimate the contribution of these three parameters to the signal. This study aims to circumvent this problem by combining radar with optical data. The DMP (Dry Mater Product) extracted from SPOT data allowed to estimate vegetation mass production. Surface roughness was estimated from radar data during the dry season. Because during the dry season, radar signal is only conditioned by soil roughness in this region a Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) was used: it consists in a microwave scattering model of layered vegetation based on the first-order solution of the radiative transfer equation and it accounts for multiple scattering within the canopy, surface roughness of the soil, and the interaction between canopy surface and soil. This model was designed to account for the branch size distribution, leaf orientation distribution, and branch orientation distribution for each size. In this study, the RTM has been calibrated with ESCAT (European Radar Satellite Scatterometer) data, and has been used in order to estimate soil moisture. The results obtained have allowed to track the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil moisture on the one hand, and on the other hand the influence of geology and morphopedology on the spatial dynamics of the soil moisture variability. These results are promising despite the fact that the inversed RTM often faces difficulties to interpret the signal for saturated soils, giving an aberrant value of soil moisture more often than not. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and surface broadband albedo are three routinely generated land-surface parameters from satellite observations, which have been widely used in land-surface modeling and environmental monitoring. Currently, most global land products are retrieved separately from individual satellite data. Many issues, such as data gaps, spatial and temporal inconsistencies, and insufficient accuracy under certain conditions resulting from the inadequacies of single-sensor observations, have made the incorporation of multiple sensors a reasonable solution. In this paper, an approach to simultaneous estimation of LAI, broadband albedo, and FAPAR from multiple-satellite sensors is further refined. The method, improved from that proposed in an earlier study using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, consists of several steps. First, a coupled dynamic and radiative-transfer model based on MODIS, SPOT/VEGETATION, and Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer data was developed to retrieve LAI values and use them to construct a time-evolving dynamic model. Second, an iteration process with predefined exit criteria was developed to obtain consistent gap-filled LAI estimates. Third, a spectral albedo based on the retrieved LAI values was simulated using a radiative-transfer model and then converted to a broadband albedo using empirical methods. Snow-covered pixels identified by normalized difference snow index thresholds were adjusted to the weighted average of the underlying albedo and the maximum snow albedo. Finally, the FAPAR of green vegetation was calculated as a combination of the albedo at the top of the canopy, the soil albedo, and the transmittance of the PAR down to the background. Validation of retrieved LAI, albedo, and FAPAR values obtained from multiple-satellite data over ten study sites has demonstrated that the proposed method can produce more accurate products than presently distributed global products. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Global or regional environmental change is of wide concern. Extensive studies have indicated that long-term vegetation cover change is one of the most important factors reflecting environmental change, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series data sets have been widely used in vegetation dynamic change monitoring. However, the significant residual effects and noise levels impede the application of NDVI time-series data in environmental change research. This study develops a novel and robust filter method, i.e., the moving weighted harmonic analysis (MWHA) method, which incorporates a moving support domain to assign the weights for all the points, making the determination of the frequency number much easier. Additionally, a four-step process flow is designed to make the data approach the upper NDVI envelope, so that the actual change in the vegetation can be detected. A total of 487 test pixels selected from SPOT VEGETATION 10-day MVC NDVI time-series data from January 1999 to December 2001 were used to illustrate the effectiveness of the new method by comparing the MWHA results with the results of another four existing methods. Finally, the long-term SPOT VEGETATION 10-day maximum-value compositing (MVC) NDVI time series for China from April 1998 to May 2014 was reconstructed by the use of the proposed method, and a test region in China was utilized to validate the effectiveness of the proposed MWHA method. All the results indicate that the reconstructed high-quality NDVI time series fits the actual growth profile of the vegetation and is suitable for use in further remote sensing applications. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing is a useful tool set for monitoring changes in forest ecosystems, particularly remote and otherwise inaccessible tracts of tropical forest. To revisit findings of earlier satellite-based studies of phenological variation in Amazonian forests, the current study focused on the variation of vegetation indices (Vis) of French Guiana. Specifically, 12 years of VI data which had been treated for bi-directional effects were extracted from the archives of 2 particular satellite sensors: the SPOT VEGETATION instrument, and MODIS (the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). At the scale of the entire territory of French Guiana, as well as at 4 sites across the territory, VI data displayed strong seasonal patterns, with the dry season months having significantly higher VI estimates than the wet season months. As Vls are considered proxies for photosynthetic activity, those seasonal variations would seem to indicate leaf-Flushing across French Guiana's forests during the dry season months of September to October.
