[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Estimating the water status of vegetation is one of the most important elements in assessing forest fire danger. In this paper, laboratory measurement confirmed a relationship between leaf water status and the normalized difference water index (NDWI), derived from nearinfrared and shortwave-infrared spectral data. Two results were confirmed: (a) NDWI is related to equivalent water thickness, and, (b) in addition to NDWI, the quantity of leaf material must be known in order to estimate vegetation dryness. Based on these findings, the authors developed a vegetation dryness index (VDI) to estimate global vegetation water content. VDI values, calculated by using SPOT/VEGETATION data, were applied to data from a 1998 forest fire in the Russian Far East. This led to two results: (a) VDI was useful for detecting areas with a high potential for ignition, and (b) VDI may have been able to detect the fire-spread direction. [Termes IGN] zone tempéréeRésumé : (Auteur) Temperate East Asia (TEA) is characterized by diverse land cover types, including forest and agricultural lands, one of the world's largest temperate grasslands, and extensive desert and barren landscapes. In this paper, we explored the potential of SPOT-4 VEGETATION (VGT) data for the classification of land cover types in TEA. An unsupervised classification was performed using multi-temporal (March November 2000) VGT-derived spectral indices (Land Surface Water Index [LSWI] and Enhanced Vegetation Index [EVI]) to generate a land cover map of TEA (called VGT-TEA). Land cover classes from VGT-TEA were aggregated to broad, general class types, and then compared and validated with classifications derived from fine-resolution (Landsat) data. VGT-TEA produced reasonable results when compared to the Landsat products. Analysis of the seasonal dynamics of LSWI and EVI allows for the identification of distinct growth patterns between different vegetation types. We suggest that LSWI seasonal curves can be used to define the growing season for temperate deciduous vegetation, including grassland types. Seasonal curves of EVI tend to have a slightly greater dynamic range than LSWI during the peak growing season and can be useful in discriminating between vegetation types. By using these two complementary spectral indices, VGT data can be used to produce timely and detailed land cover and phenology maps with limited ancillary data needed. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite-based mapping can provide a timely and efficient means of identifying burned vegetation at continental scales for estimating greenhouse gas emissions and impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget. In this study, we used a sample of 55 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes distributed across Canada to validate and calibrate 1998 and 1999 national-level burned areas maps produced using coarse resolution (approx. 1-km) SPOT VEGETATION and NOAA AVHRR imagery. Commission and omissions errors, based on fire events greater than 200 ha, were found to be small in the coarse resolution maps (4 percent and 1 percent, respectively). However, the coarse resolution burned-area estimates were 72 percent larger than the crown fire burned area mapped at 30 m using Landsat TM (11,039 versus 6,403 ha average area). This bias was attributed to spatial aggregation effects in which the coarse resolution product included the tree crown fire, partial burn, and unburned fractions of a pixel. [Termes IGN] turbulenceRésumé : (Auteur) The primary objective of this paper is to describe the validation of a parametric model (C-Fix) designed to estimate the basic carbon mass fluxes of forests in Belgium. Most validation efforts in the literature are based on point measurements. Since landscapes in Belgium are quite heterogeneous, the spatial up-scaling of a point measurement to the level of a sensor pixel is a crucial issue. Process based models quite often have a large set of input variables, some of them hardly available or not measurable on a regional basis; on the other hand most of the process based models possess a prognostic capacity. The parametric C-Fix model estimates carbon mass fluxes from local, regional to continental scales. It ingests only a modest number of meteorological input variables, including satellite observations. Parametric models do not possess a prognostic capacity, but the spatial up-scaling by the use of remote sensing data is much more straightforward than with process models. In this paper, we describe the validation of C-Fix with eddy covariance NEP (net ecosystem production) measurements and further applied C-Fix for the mapping of the geographical distribution of carbon mass fluxes over the entire Belgian territory, using NOAA-AVHRR (1997) and SPOT4-VGT imagery (April 1998-March 1999). We combine a forest probability map, derived from NOAA data for 1997 with the mapped estimates of Belgian NEP to obtain forest NEP per image pixel. Forest NEP is validated regionally, with measurements of carbon exchange obtained at two Belgian Euroflux eddy covariance tower sites (the Brasschaat, 'Inslag' and Vielsalm, 'Tinscubois' forest sites). A correlation analysis is performed for the estimated forest NEPs at both Euroflux sites and the NEP measured there, assumed to be primarily from forest. Finally, a correlation analysis with a process-based stand scale model (ASPECTS) is performed for the two forest sites, as a cross cheek on the validation results. Our results demonstrate that a parametric model, like C-Fix, provides a good basis to estimate the evolution and geographical distribution of the main constituents of the carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems, in this study specifically forest ecosystems at the regional scale (Belgium).
