[Termes IGN] transformation rapide de FourierRésumé : (Auteur) Fusion of optical and synthetic aperture radar data has been attempted in the present study for mapping of various lithologic units over a part of the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) and its surroundings. ERS-2 SAR data over the study area has been enhanced using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) based filtering approach, and also using Frost filtering technique. Both the enhanced SAR imagery have been then separately fused with histogram equalized IRS-1C LISS III image using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique. Later, Feature-oriented Principal Components Selection (FPCS) technique has been applied to generate False Color Composite (FCC) images, from which corresponding geological maps have been prepared. Finally, GIS techniques have been successfully used for change detection analysis in the lithological interpretation between the published geological map and the fusion based geological maps. In general, there is good agreement between these maps over a large portion of the study area. Based on the change detection studies, few areas could be identified which need attention for further detailed ground-based geological studies. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) Reservoir management involves allocating available water among multiple uses and users, minimizing the risks of water shortages and flooding and optimizing the beneficial use of water. Irrigation demands from a reservoir, which are generally computed by using the design cropping pattern and average rainfall conditions, may vary over the years depending on the actual cropping pattern and meteorological conditions. This study demonstrates the utility of remote sensing inputs and geographic information system (GIS) environment for determining realistic irrigation demands from a reservoir. Remote sensing data are used to map the actual cropping pattern in the command area while the GIS is used for integrating the field-level irrigation demands up to the canal system head. Ten daily irrigation demands in the command area of Samrat Ashok Sagar Reservoir in Madhya Pradesh, India, have been estimated and the reservoir operation policy has been derived. Through the simulation analysis with 29 years of inflow data, rule curves have been derived for the operation of reservoir so that water deficit (if any) can be distributed in time much in advance and severe crop failure can be avoided. Inferences drawn from the analysis can guide the system operator in using the available water in a scientific and judicious manner. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Census is the count or inventory of specific phenomenon, such as population, wild life, industry, livestock etc. Another aspect is that census is carried out periodically to show the changing trends of the phenomenon and state. Space based imaging systems, from their vantage position, has unambiguously demonstrated their capability in providing vital information on natural resources. With the availability of high-resolution multi-spectral and panchromatic earth observation images and geographic information system, can we now consider a natural resources census? The census of natural resources - land, water, soils, forests and other elements conducted in a systematic manner and with a repeat cycle to depict changes and modifications can provide a "snap-shot" of a country's status of natural resource at a particular moment of time and help in identifying areas of rapid and significant changes, which can be monitored in detail. Such inventory with periodic monitoring would help in managing the natural resources and will provide inputs to meet the demands of large population in terms of more food production, more energy generation, water management, better civic amenities, more infrastructure built-up and increasing per-capital expenditure for maintaining a quality of life. In India, Natural Resources Census (NRC) programme has been conceptualized and is being implemented. The NRC will use Indian Remote Sensing satellite images and prepares natural resources information layers of 7 key themes (land use/land cover, soil, geomorphology, vegetation, snow/glacier, land degradation, wetlands) at 1:50,000 scale with the periodicity of 5-20 years for different themes. The NRC maps and data support the repository of natural resources information and contribute to the operationalisation of a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). Recognising that standardization of methodology for mapping and spatial database generation to enable NRC for SDI is important, few proto-type NRC studies has been conducted. This paper discusses the concept of a nation-wide NRC programme and the results of one of the proto-type studies (Bangalore urban district) that India has carried out. The concept, methodology and standards suggested for NRC will be certainly useful for any country. [Termes IGN] linéamentRésumé : (Auteur) The carbonate terrain in Lebanon is dominated by cave structures as a reflection of the development of karstic features. The existing caves are known as a source for groundwater, as well as heritage and tourist sites. They have been given attention by water authorities and several scientific clubs and organizations. Yet, in the field there is no easily followed approach for their discovery. A large number of these caves have been identified by speleologists who spent long time and efforts to recognize their localities. This study aims to find out a systematic approach to discover new cave sites in Lebanon. In this respect, remote sensing, as a new and advanced information technique would be helpful in identifying surface karstic features. However, due to the relatively small-size of the cave openings, their allocation directly from satellite images is difficult. Therefore, this study aims to find out a relationship between the sites of existing caves and any terrain character that can help identify the sites of the unknown caves. Main among of these characters are the karstic and fracture systems, in which the later is basically observed on satellite images as linear features (the so-called lineaments). It is a comparative analysis between three components for easier study of the terrain. In the study Landsat ETM+ images merged with IRS-1 were used to produce the lineaments map. The morphometric analysis of lineament elements in Western Lebanon, and more certainly the intersection of linear features of different lengths indicate a percentage of 79% of coincidence with the sites of existing caves. The idea is to use the intersection of lineaments as possible indicator for cave citing that can be easily followed. The study reveals an encouraging pattern that can be further developed using remote sensing for easier terrain analysis. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The Multi-frequency Scanning Microwave Radiometer (MSMR) aboard the Indian Space Research Organization—Oceansat-1 platform measured land surface brightness temperature at a C-band frequency and provided an opportunity for exploring large-scale soil moisture retrieval during its two-year period of operation. These data may provide a valuable extension to the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) since they covered a portion of the time period between the two missions. This investigation was one of the first to utilize the MSMR data for a land application and, as a result, several data quality issues had to be addressed. These included geolocation accuracy, calibration (particularly over land), erroneous data, and the significance of anthropogenic radio-frequency interference (RFI). Calibration of the low frequency channels was evaluated using inter-comparisons between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) and the MSMR brightness temperatures. Biases (TMI TB>MSMR TB) of 3.4 and 3.6 K were observed over land for the MSMR 10.65 GHz horizontal and vertical polarization channels, respectively. These results suggested that additional calibration of the MSMR data was required. Comparisons between the MSMR measured brightness temperature and ground measured volumetric soil moisture collected during the South Great Plain experiment (SGP99) indicated that the lower frequency and horizontal polarization observations had higher sensitivity to soil moisture. Using a previously developed soil emission model, multi-temporal regional soil moisture distributions were retrieved for the continental United States. Comparisons between the MSMR based soil moisture and ground measured volumetric soil moisture indicated a standard error of estimate of 0.052 m3/m3.
