[Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (auteur) Forest maps are essential to understand forest dynamics. Due to the increasing availability of remote sensing data and machine learning models like convolutional neural networks, forest maps can these days be created on large scales with high accuracy. Common methods usually predict a map from remote sensing images without deliberately considering intermediate semantic concepts that are relevant to the final map. This makes the mapping process difficult to interpret, especially when using opaque deep learning models. Moreover, such procedure is entirely agnostic to the definitions of the mapping targets (e.g., forest types depending on variables such as tree height and tree density). Common models can at best learn these rules implicitly from data, which greatly hinders trust in the produced maps. In this work, we aim at building an explainable deep learning model for forest mapping that leverages prior knowledge about forest definitions to provide explanations to its decisions. We propose a model that explicitly quantifies intermediate variables like tree height and tree canopy density involved in the forest definitions, corresponding to those used to create the forest maps for training the model in the first place, and combines them accordingly. We apply our model to mapping forest types using very high resolution aerial imagery and lay particular focus on the treeline ecotone at high altitudes, where forest boundaries are complex and highly dependent on the chosen forest definition. Results show that our rule-informed model is able to quantify intermediate key variables and predict forest maps that reflect forest definitions. Through its interpretable design, it is further able to reveal implicit patterns in the manually-annotated forest labels, which facilitates the analysis of the produced maps and their comparison with other datasets. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is developed to classify the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) derived multispectral imagery and normalized digital surface model (DSM) data in urban areas. For this purpose, a multi-input deep CNN (MIDCNN) architecture is designed using 11 parallel CNNs; 10 deep CNNs to extract the features from all possible triple combinations of spectral bands as well as one deep CNN dedicated to the normalized DSM data. The proposed method is compared with the traditional single-input (SI) and double-input (DI) deep CNN designations and random forest (RF) classifier, and evaluated using two independent test datasets. The results indicate that increasing the CNN layers parallelly augmented the classifier’s generalization and reduced overfitting risk. The overall accuracy and kappa value of the proposed method are 95% and 0.93, respectively, for the first test dataset, and 96% and 0.94, respectively, for the second test data set. [Termes IGN] trace au solRésumé : (auteur) GPS trajectory and remote sensing data are crucial for updating urban road networks because they contain critical spatial and temporal information. Existing road network updating methods, whether trajectory-based (TB) or image-based (IB), do not integrate the characteristics of both types of data. This paper proposed and implemented an incremental update method for rapid road network checking and updating. A composite update framework for road networks is established, which integrates trajectory data and UAV remote sensing imagery. The research proposed utilizing connectivity between adjacent matched points to solve the problem of updating problematic road segments in networks based on the features of the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) map-matching method in identifying new road segments. Deep learning is used to update the local road network in conjunction with the flexible and high-precision characteristics of UAV remote sensing. Additionally, the proposed method is evaluated against two baseline methods through extensive experiments based on real-world trajectories and UAV remote sensing imagery. The results show that our method has higher extraction accuracy than the TB method and faster updates than the IB method. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, numerous directives worldwide have addressed the conservation and restoration of riparian corridors, activities that rely on continuous vegetation mapping to understand its volumetric features and health status. Mapping riparian corridors requires not only fine-scale resolution but also the coverage of relatively large areas. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) allows for meeting both conditions, although the cost-effectiveness of their use is highly influenced by the type of sensor mounted on them. Few works have so far investigated the use of photogrammetric sensors for individual tree crown detection, despite being cheaper than the most common Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) ones. This work aims to improve the individual crown detection from UAV-photogrammetric datasets in a two fold way. Firstly, the effectiveness of a new approach that has already achieved interesting results in LiDAR applications was tested for photogrammetric point clouds. The test was carried out by comparing the accuracy achieved by the new approach, which is based on the point density features of the analysed dataset, with those related to the more common local maxima and textural methods. The results indicated the potentiality of the density-based method, which achieved accuracy values (0.76F-score) consistent with the traditional methods (0.49–0.80F-score range) but was less affected by under- and over-fitting. Secondly, the potential improvement of working on intra-annual multi-temporal datasets was assessed by applying the density-based approach to seven different scenarios, three of which were constituted by single-epoch datasets and the remaining given by the joining of the others. The F-score increased from 0.67 to 0.76 when passing from single- to multi-epoch datasets, aligning with the accuracy achieved by the new method when applied to LiDAR data. The results demonstrate the potential of multi-temporal acquisitions when performing individual crown detection from photogrammetric data. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Discontinuity extraction and interpretation of fractured masses is of high importance when analyzing rock slope stability. Regarding high-steep slopes, which are areas that are difficult to reach, traditional methods to obtain discontinuities, such as the sample window method (SWM), are unlikely to be implemented, resulting in challenges for the identification of potential rockfalls. With the development of the unmanned ariel vehicle (UAV) technology, discontinuity extraction can overcome by noncontact photogrammetry. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and practical solutions to fulfill rockfall identification from field investigation to in-door analysis. For this purpose, a practical case study was carried out in Wanzhou, Chongqing, China, where a 400 m vertical rock slope prone to rockfall was collected as a typical example. The centimeter-level 3D Textured Digital Outcrop Model (TDOM) and dense Point Cloud (PC) were established using high-resolution photos acquired by nap-of-the-object photogrammetry. The discontinuity of the fractured mass was interpreted by fully taking advantage of both 2D images (texture information-dominated) and 3D PCs (depth information-dominated). Furthermore, a new parameter rock cavity rate (RCR) and the corresponding semiautomatic extraction method based on point clouds are proposed. Subsequently, the possibility of various failure modes and their joint combinations were determined by kinematic analysis. Finally, the rock slope stability was determined using a matrix that considers the slope mass rating (SMR) value and the parameter RCR. The proposed process flow and relevant techniques in this study provide an operable and practical solution for further application regarding discontinuity interpretation and potential rockfall identification on high-steep slopes.
