[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes a deep-learning-based unsupervised forest height estimation method based on the synergy of the high-resolution L-band repeat-pass Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (PolInSAR) and low-resolution large-footprint full-waveform Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. Unlike traditional PolInSAR-based methods, the proposed method reformulates the forest height inversion as a pan-sharpening process between the low-resolution LiDAR height and the high-resolution PolSAR and PolInSAR features. A tailored Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) called PolGAN with one generator and dual (coherence and spatial) discriminators is proposed to this end, where a progressive pan-sharpening strategy underpins the generator to overcome the significant difference between spatial resolutions of LiDAR and SAR-related inputs. Forest height estimates with high spatial resolution and vertical accuracy are generated through a continuous generative and adversarial process. UAVSAR PolInSAR and LVIS LiDAR data collected over tropical and boreal forest sites are used for experiments. Ablation study is conducted over the boreal site evidencing the superiority of the progressive generator with dual discriminators employed in PolGAN (RMSE: 1.21 m) in comparison with the standard generator with dual discriminators (RMSE: 2.43 m) and the progressive generator with a single coherence (RMSE: 2.74 m) or spatial discriminator (RMSE: 5.87 m). Besides that, by reducing the dependency on theoretical models and utilizing the shape, texture, and spatial information embedded in the high-spatial-resolution features, the PolGAN method achieves an RMSE of 2.37 m over the tropical forest site, which is much more accurate than the traditional PolInSAR-based Kapok method (RMSE: 8.02 m). [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (auteur) This paper introduces a method based on centroid clustering and contour analysis to extract area and height measurements on buildings from the 3D model generated by oblique images. The method comprises three steps: (1) extract the contour plane from the fused data of the digital surface model (DSM) and digital orthophoto map (DOM); (2) identify building contour clusters based on the number of centroids contained in each category determined by mean-shift centroid clustering; (3) remove the mis-identified contours in a given building contour cluster by a contour analysis and obtain the geometric information of the building using map algebra. The proposed approach was tested against four datasets. Compared with other results, the detection has effective completeness, correctness, quality, and higher geometric accuracy. The maximum average relative error of building height and area extraction is less than 8%. The method is fast for a large-scale collection of building attributes and improves the applicability of oblique photography in GIS. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Spatial information on urban forest canopy height (FCH) is fundamental for urban forest monitoring and assisting urban planning and management. Traditionally, ground-based canopy height measurements are time-consuming and laborious, making it challenging for periodic inventory of urban FCH at crown level. Airborne-light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor can efficiently measure crown-level FCH; however, the high cost of airborne-LiDAR data collection over large scales hinders its wide applications at a high temporal resolution. Previous studies have shown that in some cases, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) approach (i.e., UAV-based structure from motion algorithm) is equivalent to or even outperform airborne-LiDAR in measuring forest structure, but few studies have evaluated their performances in measuring FCH in more complex urban environment, across non-ground coverage (including both canopy and building coverage) and topographical slope gradients. Also, the contribution of multi-angle measurement technique from UAV-DAP to FCH estimation accuracy has rarely been explored in the urban environment. Here, we compared the performances of UAV-LiDAR and UAV-DAP approaches on measuring thousands of crown-level FCH at different non-ground coverage and topographical slope areas in an urban environment. Specifically, UAV-LiDAR-based spatial measurements of crown-level FCH were used as the reference after ground-based validation (R2 = 0.88, RMSE = 2.36 m). The accuracy of UAV-DAP approach with/without multi-angle measurement in different non-ground coverage and topographical slope areas were then analyzed. The results showed that although the DAP multi-angle-based approach can improve the accuracy of spatial measurement for crown-level FCH in some cases, non-ground coverage (including both canopy and building coverage) was still the main factor affecting the broad applications of DAP approach in measuring urban FCH: at areas where non-ground coverage 0.95, except for the case of flat areas (i.e., topographical slope 0.95, can significantly improve the accuracy of UAV-DAP approach in measuring crown-level FCH (R2 = 0.91, RMSE =1.61 m). Our study thus provides a complete guidance on the usage of cost-effective UAV-DAP approach for measuring crown-level FCH in the urban environment, which will be helpful for precise urban forest management and improving the efficiency of urban environmental planning. The accurate estimation of its tree aboveground biomass (AGB) is of significant value to evaluate urban ecological functions and estimate urban forest carbon storage. It has a high accuracy to estimate the forest AGB with field measured canopy structure parameters, but unsuitable for large-scale operations. Limited by low spatial resolution or spectral saturation, the estimated forest AGBs based on various satellite remotely sensed data have relatively low accuracies. In contrast, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing provides a promising way to accurately estimate the tree AGB of fragmented urban forest. In this study, taking an artificial urban forest in Ma'anxi Wetland Park in Chongqing City, China as an example, we used UAVs equipped with a digital camera and a LiDAR to acquire two point cloud data. One was produced from overlapping images using Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, and the other was resolved from laser scanned raw data. The dual point clouds were combined to extract individual tree height (H) and canopy radius (Rc), which were then input to the newly established allometric equation with tree H and Rc as predictor variables to obtain the AGBs of all dawn redwood trees in study area. In accuracy assessment, the coefficient of determination (R2) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of extracted H were 0.9341 and 0.59 m; the R2 and RMSE of extracted Rc were 0.9006 and 0.28 m; the R2 and RMSE of estimated AGB were 0.9452 and 17.59 kg. These results proved the feasibility and effectiveness of applying dual-source UAV point cloud data and the new allometric equation on H and Rc to accurate AGB estimation of urban forest trees. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) represents a rather innovative, quick, and low-cost methodological approach offering applications in several fields of investigation. The present study illustrates the developed method using Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on UAV-derived data for evaluating short-term morphological-topographic changes of the beach system and related implications for coastal vulnerability assessment. UAV surveys were performed during the summers of 2019 and 2020 along a beach stretch affected by erosion, located along the central Adriatic coast. Acquired high-resolution aerial photos were used to generate large-scale DEMs as well as orthophotos of the beach using the Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing tool. Comparison of the generated 2019 and 2020 DEMs highlighted significant morphological changes and a sediment volume loss of about 780 m3 within a surface area of about 4400 m2. Based on 20 m spaced beach profiles derived from the DEMs, a coastal vulnerability assessment was performed using the CVA approach that highlighted some significant variations in the CVA index between 2019 and 2020. Results evidence that UAV surveys provide high-resolution topographic data, suitable for specific beach monitoring activities and the updating of some parameters that enter in the CVA model contributing to its correct application.
