[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) With increasing use of geographic information sytems (GIS) true ortho-projections gain more and more importance. True ortho-images are geometrically correct and can be overlayed and intersected with GIS date sources of all kind. A complete true ortho-computation requires a detailed digital surface model as input, which can be collected by the airborne laser scanning approach. The sensor package of TopoSys GmbH allows for a simultaneaous collection of high resolution height and multispectral image data. Using the image data of the TopoSys linear array scanner true orthophotos in RGB and infrared are derived through processing of the LIDAR digital surface model. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Urban area building extraction is one of the most challenging problems in photogrammetry. Wellextracted buildings are needed for a variety of applications, such as cartography, building GIS databases for cities, and urban planning. This paper presents a new technique to extract 3D building wireframes using a robust multiimage linematching algorithm. Although one pair of images is adequate to find the 3D position of two visibly corresponding image, features, it is not sufficient to solve the general building extraction problem due to obscured parts in the building. Four images are used in this research to extract the building wireframes. First the images are segmented into regions. Regions are then classified into roof regions and nonroof regions based on their size, shape, and intensity values. The roof region boundary pixels are located and used to find the region perimeters. Region correspondence is solved in a pairwise mode over all images using the epipolar constraint, region size, region shape, and region intensity values. Image lines within the corresponding regions are matched over all images simultaneously by first creating a plane for each region line. Planes are then intersected simultaneously and geometric consistency is used to determine acceptance or rejection. Results with high overlap and sidelap aerial images are presented and evaluated. The results show the completeness and accuracy that this method can provide for extracting complex urban buildings. The average coordinate accuracy is about 08 m using 1:4000 scale aerial photographs scanned at 30 um Six buildings were examined; the line detection rate is 98%. [Termes IGN] solideRésumé : (Auteur) Building extraction based on preestablished models has been recognized as a promising idea for acquiring 3D data for buildings from aerial images. This paper proposes a novel building extraction method developed from the concept of fitting CSG (Constructive Solid Geometry) primitives to aerial images. To be practicable, this method adopts a semiautomatic procedure, carrying out highlevel tasks (building detection, model selection, and attribution) interactively by the operator and performing optimal modelimage fitting automatically with a leastsquares fitting algorithm. Buildings, represented by CSG models, can be reconstructed part by part after fitting each parameterized CSG primitive to the edge pixels of aerial images. Reconstructed building parts can then be combined using CSG Boolean set operators. Consequently, a building is represented by a CSG tree in which each node links two branches of combined parts. This paper demonstrates ten examples of building extraction from aerial photos taken at a scale of 1:5,000 and scanned at a pixel size of 25 1.um. All of the tests were performed in the prototypal system implemented in a CADbased environment cooperated with a number of specially designed programs. The process time for each primitive is about 20 seconds and the successful rate of model-image fitting was about 90 percent. Evaluated with some check points, the fitting accuracy was about 0,3 m horizontally and 1 m vertically. The test results are encouraging and promote the theory of modelbased building extraction. In this thesis, the reconstruction of 3D building models from aerial images is addressed. The approach presented in this thesis integrates the aerial images analysis with information from a GIS database and domain knowledge.
The problem of automatic 3D building reconstruction has been a central research topic in computer vision and image understanding communities as well as in digital photogrammetry for many years. A variety of approaches has been suggested for the reconstruction of buildings from aerial images. Despite considerable research effort, there is no complete system that can reliably perform autonomous 3D building reconstruction in a wide variety of scene domains. This is particularly true in complex urban areas containing buildings with different shapes and roof types as well as in complicated underlying terrain. Of course, some progress has been made, but there is room for improvement. This improvement can be achieved by fusing multiple data sources and some a priori information.
In this project, largescale 2D GIS databases were used as additional information source. Combination of image data and map data turned out to improve the reliability of the reconstruction. Generic knowledge about the shape of the buildings is also incorporated in the system. Since most buildings can be described as an aggregation of simple building types, the knowledge about the problem domain can be represented in a building library containing simple building models. Therefore, a building library was defined containing the most common building primitives, such as flat roof, and different types of gable roofs.
The building reconstruction process was formulated as a multilevel hypothesis generation and verification scheme and it was implemented as a search tree. A method that can localize the buildings in images using map information has been developed. Also, a method for generating building hypotheses corresponding to the primitives defined in the building library has been developed. This implies stereo matching of image features (corners, lines) which correspond to map primitives and fitting of the building hypotheses to images.
A further contribution is the definition of a metric for evaluating the generated building hypotheses in order to select the one which best describes the image. The metric is based on the formulation of the mutual information between the building model and the images. Methods for the estimation of the mutual information from training samples were analyzed. This metric has been rigorously derived from information theory and does not require a priori information about the surface properties of the object and is robust with respect to variations of illumination. Also, no assumption about the shape of the objects are made. As result the method is quite general and may be used in a wide variety of applications.
The produced approach is able to meet most of the requirements of an automatic 3D building reconstruction system. The developed system has been used in urban and suburban areas to reconstruct buildings and showed good results. Experiments were carried out on two data sets with different characteristics. The system was able to reconstruct more than 80% of the buildings and the accuracy of the reconstruction is good enough for mapping purposes.
