[Termes IGN] image aérienne obliqueRésumé : (Auteur) Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently attained great attention. This article explains why this is so and describes the wide range of users and applications. But UAVs also have a number of disadvantages, which have to be solved in the future in order to establish a good transition from 'toys to tools'. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (auteur) Current Internet-inspired mapping data are in the form of street maps, orthophotos, 3D models or street-side images and serve to support mostly search and navigation. Yet the only mapping data that currently can really be searched are the street maps via their addresses and coordinates. The orthophotos, 3D models and street-side images represent predominantly “eye candy” with little added value to the Internet-user. We are interested in characterizing the elements of the urban space from imagery. In this paper, we discuss the use of street side imagery and aerial imagery to develop descriptions of urban spaces, initially of building facades and roofs. We present methods (a) to segment facades using high-overlap street side facade images, (b) to map facades and facade details from vertical aerial images, and (c) to characterize roofs by their type and details, also from aerial photography. This paper describes a method of roof segmentation with the goal of assigning each roof to a specific architectural style. Questions of the use of the attic space, or the placement of solar panels, are of interest. It is of interest that roofs have recently been mapped using LiDAR point clouds. We demonstrate that aerial images are a useful and economical alternative to LiDAR for the characterization of buildingroofs, and that they also contain very valuable information about facades. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (auteur) We investigate in this paper an original methodology for detecting roof facets through the fusion of aerial images and lidar data (3D point cloud). Based on a hierarchical segmentation of the image, we define a cost function that manages the merging order of regions. It depends on both radio-metric similarities of two neighbouring regions as well as on extracted information from lidar data. Considering that lidar data have been filtered into points belonging either to ground or non-ground classes, we define semantic and geometric rules in the binary merging process. Building roof facets are finally detected by selecting a level of generality for representing roof building components. Some remarks are given concerning the reliability of the integration of lidar and image data. Reconstructed roof facets are finally shown onto complex buildings. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes a framework for surface reconstruction in urban areas from digital multiple aerial calibrated images. A dense and reliable DSM (digital surface model) is first generated and used to split the scene in two kinds of areas of interest - ground and buildings. The surfaces within these areas are modeled under TIN (triangular irregular network) form by a constrained Delaunay triangulation of a selection of 3D points and line segments provided by reliable true multi-image feature extractions. The DSM are reliable, accurate, and correctly reproduce landscape morphology (discontinuities, steep slopes, slope breaks, microstructures, etc.).
