[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urbanisation generates greater population densities and an increase in anthropogenic heat generation. These factors elevate the urban–rural air temperature (Ta) difference, thus generating the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. Ta is used in the fields of public health and epidemiology to quantify deaths attributable to heat in cities around the world: the presence of UHI can exacerbate exposure to high temperatures during summer periods, thereby increasing the risk of heat-related mortality. Measuring and monitoring the spatial patterns of Ta in urban contexts is challenging due to the lack of a good network of weather stations. This study aims to produce a parsimonious model to retrieve maximum Ta (Tmax) at high spatio-temporal resolution using Earth Observation (EO) satellite data. The novelty of this work is twofold: (i) it will produce daily estimations of Tmax for London at 1 km2 during the summertime between 2006 and 2017 using advanced statistical techniques and satellite-derived predictors, and (ii) it will investigate for the first time the predictive power of the gradient boosting algorithm to estimate Tmax for an urban area. In this work, 6 regression models were calibrated with 6 satellite products, 3 geospatial features, and 29 meteorological stations. Stepwise linear regression was applied to create 9 groups of predictors, which were trained and tested on each regression method. This study demonstrates the potential of machine learning algorithms to predict Tmax: the gradient boosting model with a group of five predictors (land surface temperature, Julian day, normalised difference vegetation index, digital elevation model, solar zenith angle) was the regression model with the best performance (R² = 0.68, MAE = 1.60 °C, and RMSE = 2.03 °C). This methodological approach is capable of being replicated in other UK cities, benefiting national heat-related mortality assessments since the data (provided by NASA and the UK Met Office) and programming languages (Python) sources are free and open. This study provides a framework to produce a high spatio-temporal resolution of Tmax, assisting public health researchers to improve the estimation of mortality attributable to high temperatures. In addition, the research contributes to practice and policy-making by enhancing the understanding of the locations where mortality rates may increase due to heat. Therefore, it enables a more informed decision-making process towards the prioritisation of actions to mitigate heat-related mortality amongst the vulnerable population. ACE from high-resolution airborne imagery is the most suitable method for control and monitoring practices in large cities such as traffic management. The use of deep learning–based feature extraction methods, such as convolutional neural networks, have been providing state-of-the-art performance in the last few years, particularly, these techniques have been successfully applied to automatic object extraction from images. In this paper, we proposed a novel hybrid method to take advantage of the semantic segmentation of high-resolution airborne imagery to ACE that is realized based on the combination of deep convolutional neural networks and restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM). This hybrid method is called RBMDeepNet. We trained and tested our model on the ISPRS Potsdam and Vaihingen benchmark datasets (non-big data) which is more challenging for ACE. Here, Potsdam data is a true-color dataset, and Vaihingen data is a false-color dataset. The results obtained in the present study showed that the proposed method for ACE from high-resolution airborne imagery achieves a 7% improvement in accuracy with about 10% improvement in processing time compared to similar methods. [Termes IGN] vent de sableRésumé : (auteur) Sand dune migration poses a potential threat to desert infrastructure, vegetation, and atmospheric conditions. Capturing the patterns of long-term dune migration is useful for predicting probable desertification issues and wind conditions across vast desert areas. In this study, we employed optical image matching and a singular value decomposition approach to estimate the rates of dune migration in the North Sinai Sand Sea using the free Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 archives. Our optical image matching time-series selection and inversion (OPTSI) algorithm limited the difference in the solar illumination of correlated pairs to decrease shadows and seasonal variability. We found that the maximum annual dune migration rates were 9.4 m/a and 15.9 m/a for Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data, respectively, and the results of time-series analysis revealed the existence of seasonal variations in dune migration controlled by wind regimes. The directions of sand movement extracted from the mean velocity solution agreed strongly with each other and with the drift directions estimated using wind data from meteorological stations. We assessed the uncertainty of each solution based on the variance of stable areas. Our results showed that the proposed inversion decreased uncertainty by up to 25% and increased the spatial coverage by up to 20%. This algorithm is also promising for the retrieval of historical time series on the ground displacements of glaciers and slow-moving landslides employing free archives that provide high-frequency images. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Background: The age of forest stands is critical information for forest management and conservation, for example for growth modelling, timing of management activities and harvesting, or decisions about protection areas. However, area-wide information about forest stand age often does not exist. In this study, we developed regression models for large-scale area-wide prediction of age in Norwegian forests. For model development we used more than 4800 plots of the Norwegian National Forest Inventory (NFI) distributed over Norway between latitudes 58° and 65° N in an 18.2 Mha study area. Predictor variables were based on airborne laser scanning (ALS), Sentinel-2, and existing public map data. We performed model validation on an independent data set consisting of 63 spruce stands with known age.
Results: The best modelling strategy was to fit independent linear regression models to each observed site index (SI) level and using a SI prediction map in the application of the models. The most important predictor variable was an upper percentile of the ALS heights, and root mean squared errors (RMSEs) ranged between 3 and 31 years (6% to 26%) for SI-specific models, and 21 years (25%) on average. Mean deviance (MD) ranged between − 1 and 3 years. The models improved with increasing SI and the RMSEs were largest for low SI stands older than 100 years. Using a mapped SI, which is required for practical applications, RMSE and MD on plot level ranged from 19 to 56 years (29% to 53%), and 5 to 37 years (5% to 31%), respectively. For the validation stands, the RMSE and MD were 12 (22%) and 2 years (3%), respectively.
Conclusions: Tree height estimated from airborne laser scanning and predicted site index were the most important variables in the models describing age. Overall, we obtained good results, especially for stands with high SI. The models could be considered for practical applications, although we see considerable potential for improvements if better SI maps were available.

[Termes IGN] télémètre laser aéroportéRésumé : (auteur) Key message: This work analyses the rate of recovery of the spectral signal from clearcut areas of coppice Mediterranean forests using Landsat Time Series (LTS). The analysis revealed a more rapid rate of spectral signal recovery than what was found in previous investigations in boreal and temperate forests. Context: The rate of post-disturbance vegetation recovery is an important component of forest dynamics. Aims: In this study, we analyze the recovery of the spectral signal from forest clearcut areas in Mediterranean conditions when the coppice system of forest management is applied. Methods:
We used LTS surface reflectance data (1999–2015). We generated an annual reference database of clearcuts using visual interpretation and local forest inventory data, and then derived the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) spectral trajectories for these clearcuts. From these spectral trajectories, we calculated the Years to Recovery or Y2R, the number of years it takes for a pixel to return to within a specified threshold (i.e., 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%) of its pre-disturbance value. Spectral recovery rates were then corroborated using measures of canopy height derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Results: The coppice system is associated with rapid recovery rates when compared to rates of recovery from seeds or seedlings in temperate and boreal forest conditions. We found that the Y2R derived from the spectral trajectories of post-clearcut NBR and NDVI provided similar characterizations of rapid recovery for the coppice system of forest management applied in our study area. The ALS measures of canopy height indicated that the Y2R metric accurately captured the rapid regeneration of coppice systems. Conclusion: The rapid rate of spectral recovery associated with the coppice system is 2–4 years, which contrasts with values reported in boreal and temperate forest environments, where spectral recovery was attained in approximately 10 years. NBR is an effective index for assessing rapid recovery in this forest system.Numéro de notice : A2020-293 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-00936-2 Date de publication en ligne : 15/04/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-00936-2 Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95123
