[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) MODIS-based NDVI time series (2000–2016) was applied to monitor sub-annual forest disturbance in the Mexican state of Michoacán, with an algorithm that decomposes the time-series data into a harmonic function and a trend. To detect change, a moving sum of residuals between the observed and predicted NDVI values was compared with that from the reference period. Magnitude of change was computed by subtracting the predicted NDVI from the observed one. By comparing the detected changes with reference data through visual interpretation, a threshold of |0.05| was established as the magnitude of change for forest disturbance detection. The method detected more forest gain than loss for 2013–2016, a result which is supported by recent findings from the national forest inventory. Forest loss decreases yearly for 2013–2016, and forest gain peaks at 2014 and 2015. We verified the findings with data from the global forest cover change project. Although hyperspectral remote sensing provides significant opportunities in the assessment of land cover, the applications of such data are limited in the snow-covered alpine regions. A major issue with hyperspectral data is the larger dimensionality. Feature selection methods are often used to derive the most informative subset of bands from the hyperspectral data. In this study, a band selection technique is proposed which utilizes the mutual information (MI) between hyperspectral bands and a reference band. The first principal component of the hyperspectral data is selected as the reference band. Two variants of this approach are proposed involving preclustering of bands using: (1) the k-means and (2) the fuzzy k-means algorithms. The MI is derived from weighted entropy of the hyperspectral band and the reference band. The weights are computed from the cluster distance ratio and the cluster membership function for the k-means and fuzzy k-means algorithm, respectively. The selected bands were classified using random forest classifier. The proposed methods are evaluated with four datasets, two Hyperion datasets corresponding to the geographical locations of Dhundi and Solang in India, corresponding to snow covered terrain and two benchmark AVIRIS datasets of Indian Pines and Salinas. The average classification accuracy (0.995 and 0.721 for Dhundi and Solang datasets, respectively) for the proposed approach were observed to be better as compared with those from other state of the art techniques. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) This study analyzed the land deformation associated with Mw 6.3 earthquake along Pasni coast, Pakistan. Post-earthquake widespread surface displacements were found using Sentinel-1 data. Pre, Co and Post-seismic images were used to investigate the deformation trends. Before the earthquake, 89.65% of Pasni land mass showed uplifting from 0.0 to 3.0 cm at 1.00 mm/day while 3.0 cm subsidence was noted in 86.36% of the land mass after the earthquake at 2.5 mm/day. However, two weeks after the earthquake, 72.9% Pasni land mass showed uplifting at an unprecedented rate of 3.3 mm/day. The maximum deformation along the Line Of Sight (LOS) direction in co-seismic time was about -4.0 cm. Azimuthal interferogram showed more complex displacement pattern with both negative and positive displacements between ±5.0 cm. Pasni is already facing many problems due to increased sea water intrusion under prevailing climatic changes and land deformation due to strong earthquakes. However, obtaining land cover classification via optical remote sensing data alone is difficult due to spectral confusion. To reduce the confusion between dark impervious surface and water, the Sentinel-1A Synthetic Aperture Rader (SAR) data are synergistically combined with the Sentinel-2B Multispectral Instrument (MSI) data. The novel support vector machine with composite kernels (SVM-CK) approach, which can exploit the spatial information, is proposed to process the combination of Sentinel-2B MSI and Sentinel-1A SAR data. The classification based on the fusion of Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-1A data yields an overall accuracy (OA) of 92.12% with a kappa coefficient (KA) of 0.89, superior to the classification results using Sentinel-2B MSI imagery and Sentinel-1A SAR imagery separately. The results indicate that the inclusion of Sentinel-1A SAR data to Sentinel-2B MSI data can improve the classification performance by reducing the confusion between built-up area and water. This study shows that the land cover classification can be improved by fusing Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-1A imagery. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urban land-use maps outlining the distribution, pattern, and composition of various land use types are critically important for urban planning, environmental management, disaster control, health protection, and biodiversity conservation. Recent advances in remote sensing and social sensing data and methods have shown great potentials in mapping urban land use categories, but they are still constrained by mixed land uses, limited predictors, non-localized models, and often relatively low accuracies. To inform these issues, we proposed a robust and cost-effective framework for mapping urban land use categories using openly available multi-source geospatial “big data”. With street blocks generated from OpenStreetMap (OSM) data as the minimum classification unit, we integrated an expansive set of multi-scale spatially explicit information on land surface, vertical height, socio-economic attributes, social media, demography, and topography. We further proposed to apply the automatic ensemble learning that leverages a bunch of machine learning algorithms in deriving optimal urban land use classification maps. Results of block-level urban land use classification in five metropolitan areas of the United States found the overall accuracies of major-class (Level-I) and minor-class (Level-II) classification could be high as 91% and 86%, respectively. A multi-model comparison revealed that for urban land use classification with high-dimensional features, the multi-layer stacking ensemble models achieved better performance than base models such as random forest, extremely randomized trees, LightGBM, CatBoost, and neural networks. We found without very-high-resolution National Agriculture Imagery Program imagery, the classification results derived from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and other open big data based features could achieve plausible overall accuracies of Level-I and Level-II classification at 88% and 81%, respectively. We also found that model transferability depended highly on the heterogeneity in characteristics of different regions. The methods and findings in this study systematically elucidate the role of data sources, classification methods, and feature transferability in block-level land use classifications, which have important implications for mapping multi-scale essential urban land use categories.
