Uniquely, the proposed system is an integrated solution that merges the power of perceptual grouping theory (Gabor filtering, tensor voting) and optimized segmentation techniques (global optimization using graph-cuts) into a unified framework to address the challenging problems of geospatial feature detection and classification. Firstly, the local precision of the Gabor filters is combined with the global context of the tensor voting to produce accurate classification of the geospatial features. In addition, the tensorial representation used for the encoding of the data eliminates the need for any thresholds, therefore removing any data dependencies. Secondly, a novel orientation-based segmentation is presented which incorporates the classification of the perceptual grouping, and results in segmentations with better defined boundaries and continuous linear segments. Finally, a set of gaussian-based filters are applied to automatically extract centerline information (magnitude, width and orientation). This information is then used for creating road segments and transforming them to their polygonal representations. Quatre questions doivent être abordées afin d'améliorer cette situation. [Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Silverleaf sunflower (Helianthus argophyllus, Torr and Gray) is an annual weed found on rangelands in south and southeast Texas. Colour-infrared aerial photography and computer image analysis techniques were evaluated for detecting and mapping silverleaf sunflower infestations on a south Texas rangeland area. Supervised and unsupervised image analysis classification techniques were used to classify photographs from two study sites. Supervised classification of the two photographs showed that silverleaf sunflower had mean producer's and user's accuracies of 95.2% and 91.3%, respectively. Unsupervised classification of the two photographs had mean producer's and user's accuracies for silverleaf sunflower of 65.7% and 80.1%, respectively. These results indicate that the supervised technique is superior to the unsupervised technique for mapping silverleaf sunflower infestations using colour-infrared aerial photos. The development of alder carr was reconstructed at five sites in the Czech Republic, using historical aerial photographs and methods of dendrochronology. The aims were to investigate the succession from wet grasslands to alder carr at sites previously intensively managed for agriculture and to find out the role of fluctuations in the groundwater table, caused by artificial drainage channels, in the observed stand dynamics and tree growth. The spread of forest (i.e., an increase in forest cover) predominated until the 1970s at all sites. This trend was disrupted by a large-scale dieback of forest stands in four of the five sites after the 1970s, followed by an increase in patch heterogeneity, as indicated by landscape metrics. The radial growth increment in Alnus glutinosa has been affected predominately by local environmental factors, probably including the changing degree of waterlogging. Forest dieback was presumably connected with a lesser extent of drainage channels. Our results indicate that observed successional pathways at sites of alder carr were probably caused by local changes in the groundwater table.
