[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) An overview of the March 2003 coordinated sea ice field campaign in the Alaskan Arctic is presented with reference to the papers in this special section. This campaign is part of the program to validate the Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sea ice products. Standard AMSR-E sea ice products include sea ice concentration, sea ice temperature, and snow depth on sea ice. The validation program consists of three elements, namely: 1) satellite data comparisons; 2) coordinated satellite/aircraft/surface measurements; and 3) modeling and sensitivity analyses. Landsat-7 and RADARSAT observations were used in comparative studies with the retrieved AMSR-E sea ice concentrations. The aircraft sensors provided high-resolution microwave imagery of the surface, atmospheric profiles of temperature and humidity, and digital records of sea ice conditions. When combined with in situ measurements, aircraft data were used to validate the AMSR-E sea ice temperature and snow-depth products. The modeling studies helped interpret the field-data comparisons, provided insight on the limitations of the AMSR-E sea ice algorithms, and suggested potential improvements to the AMSR-E retrieval algorithms. [Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Ecological assessment of ground cover by conventional on-the-ground point sampling is labor intensive, expensive, and biased by access. Historically, motion blur has prevented high-resolution aerial photography from being used for ground cover measurements. To reduce motion blur we used a fixed-wing, 225-kg (empty weight) airplane flown at 72 km/hr ground speed 100 in above ground level with both a modified Hulcher 70 mm camera (500mm lens, Kodak Aerocolor HS SO-846 film, 1/4,000-second shutter speed), and a Canon 11. 1 mega-pixel, automatic, digital single lens reflex, color camera (420 mm focal-length lens). The resulting very-large scale aerial (VLSA) photography had resolutions of 5.0 and 2.1 mm GSD (Ground Sample Distance) for the scanned film and digital-camera images, respectively. Motion blur was minimal. The cost for obtaining 450 VLSA photographs over a 70,800-ha watershed was $0.07 ha. We found our methods well adapted for extensive aerial surveys to monitor the ecological condition of rangeland watersheds. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a variogram-based texture analysis was tested for classifying detailed urban land-use classes, such as mobile home, single-family house, multi-family house, industrial, and commercial from a digital color infrared aerial photograph. Spectral classification was first carried out to separate the building class from non-building classes. Then, a building-presence binary image was generated so that building pixels were assigned a value of "1 " and non-building pixels were assigned a value of "0. " Multiple texture bands were further generated employing a variogram-based texture analysis and used for land-use classification. The generation of the building presence binary image allowed us not only to fully explore the capability of variogram-based analysis on spatial pattern detection, but also to prevent the variogram-based analysis from being disturbed by the natural fluctuation of spectral signals. The result from using a mosaic test image was considered satisfactory with a kappa coefficient of 0.72. [Termes IGN] photographie terrestreRésumé : (Editeur) Over the past few years, there has been a spectacular growth in the acquisition of low-attitude aerial photography taken from heights of 200 m or lower. In the past, this has been a difficult environment for the operation of manned aircraft, both in terms of air traffic restrictions and on grounds of safety, especially over urban areas. However new developments in platforms and digital imagers are now allowing low-attitude aerial photography to be obtained in a more or less routine fashion. A big advantage of these new developments is that the airborne imaging can be carried out and controlled remotely from the ground without the need for and the expense of sending someone into the air to execute the operation.
