[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In this study, the potential of Sentinel-1 data to seasonally monitor temperate forests was investigated by analyzing radar signatures observed from plots in the Fontainebleau Forest of the Ile de France region, France, for the period extending from March 2015 to January 2016. Radar backscattering coefficients, σ0 and the amplitude of temporal interferometric coherence profiles in relation to environmental variables are shown, such as in situ precipitation and air temperature. The high temporal frequency of Sentinel-1 acquisitions (i.e., twelve days, or six, if both Sentinel-1A and B are combined over Europe) and the dual polarization configuration (VV and VH over most land surfaces) made a significant contribution. In particular, the radar backscattering coefficient ratio of VV to VH polarization, σ0VV/σ0VH , showed a well-pronounced seasonality that was correlated with vegetation phenology, as confirmed in comparison to NDVI profiles derived from Landsat-8 (r = 0.77) over stands of deciduous trees. These results illustrate the high potential of Sentinel-1 data for monitoring vegetation, and as these data are not sensitive to the atmosphere, the phenology could be estimated with more accuracy than optical data. These observations will be quantitatively analyzed with the use of electromagnetic models in the near future. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this study is to determine deformations in landslide areas with two methods, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). In the Koyulhisar landslide area, 53 GNSS points were established throughout the region. Velocity values for these points are three-dimensional. In addition, TerraSAR-X SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images were processed with Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers software. Slip surfaces of the landslide region in the direction of the line of sight were calculated from PSI in addition to one-dimensional velocity values. These values were compared to GNSS data converted to the same format. GNSS was found more effective for tracking local deformations based on point data while PSI was better at areal movements. Using both methods together is the most effective in this region because there are small local movements independent of regional movements. There is an increasingly urgent demand for timely and accurate monitoring of the impervious surfaces with satellite technology from local to global scales. In the past decades, optical remote sensing has been widely employed for this task with various techniques. However, there are still a range of challenges, e.g. handling cloud contamination on optical data. Therefore, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) was introduced for the challenging task because it is uniquely all-time- and all-weather-capable. Nevertheless, with an increasing number of SAR data applied, the methodology used for impervious surfaces classification remains unchanged from the methods used for optical datasets. This shortcoming has prevented the community from fully exploring the potential of using SAR data for impervious surfaces classification. We proposed a new scheme that is comparable to the well-known and fundamental Vegetation-Impervious surface-Soil (V-I-S) model for mapping urban impervious surfaces. Three scenes of fully polarimetric Radsarsat-2 data for the cities of Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau were employed to test and validate the proposed methodology. Experimental results indicated that the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient were 96.00% and 0.8808 in Shenzhen, 93.87% and 0.8307 in Hong Kong and 97.48% and 0.9354 in Macau, indicating the applicability and great potential of the new scheme for impervious surfaces classification using polarimetric SAR data. Comparison with the traditional scheme indicated that this new scheme was able to improve the overall accuracy by up to 4.6% and Kappa coefficient by up to 0.18. [Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this paper was to propose a new methodology for preprocessing and enhancing C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for the automatic detection of marine oil slicks. The proposed methodology includes three processing levels: preprocessing, thresholding, and binary cleaning. The first level is to correct the heterogeneity of brightness in SAR images caused by the non-Lambertian reflection of the radar signal on the sea surface. This heterogeneity can be justified by: the distance from the nadir (incidence angle effect), the interaction between wind direction and radar pulse, and the wide swath mode. The second level consists of a thresholding step. The third level is to clean the binary output images from noise residues. Several preprocessing and cleaning methods have been tested and evaluated by a qualification engine that compares the automatically detected patches with a training data set of manually detected dark patches. The training data set includes oil slicks and lookalikes. As a result, the “best” preprocessing method that homogenizes the brightness of C-band SAR scenes and optimizes the automatic detection of marine oil slicks is based on an adaptation to the C-band MODel. As for the cleaning process, the tested morphological methods show that small object removal followed by a morphological closing optimizes the automatic detection of marine oil slicks. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we discuss the potential and challenges regarding SAR-optical stereogrammetry for urban areas, using very-high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing imagery. Since we do this mainly from a geometrical point of view, we first analyze the height reconstruction accuracy to be expected for different stereogrammetric configurations. Then, we propose a strategy for simultaneous tie point matching and 3D reconstruction, which exploits an epipolar-like search window constraint. To drive the matching and ensure some robustness, we combine different established hand-crafted similarity measures. For the experiments, we use real test data acquired by the Worldview-2, TerraSAR-X and MEMPHIS sensors. Our results show that SAR-optical stereogrammetry using VHR imagery is generally feasible with 3D positioning accuracies in the meter-domain, although the matching of these strongly hetereogeneous multi-sensor data remains very challenging.
