[Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) This paper shows results of digital elevation models (DEMs) generated from various RADARSAT stereopairs (fine, standard, extended) over three different topographic study sites (flattorolling, rollingtomountainous, mountainoustosteep) using 31) parametric modcling developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) and an automated image matching method. Reference topographic DEMs were first used to compute terrain slope and aspect and then to evaluate the accuracy of the stereoderived DEMs as a function of the slopes and aspects. The DEM accuracy was almost linearly correlated with the terrain slope, with the larger errors in the steepest slopes. In addition, the stronger the stereo radar geometry, the more heterogeneous the DEM is. For the aspect, the best and worse results generally occurred in the foreslopes and backslopes, respectively, and there is no specific trend in the azimuth. Finally, the more pronounced the relief, the higher the correlation between the elevation accuracy and the aspect is and the larger the variations of the elevation accuracy are. [Termes IGN] objet fractalRésumé : (Auteur) The paper introduces a parametric model for the power spectrum density of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferograms. This model is derived by assuming the interferogram as a stationary frequency-modulated process and by exploiting the statistical description of earth topography provided by multifractal fields. Despite the small number of parameters involved (three to six in most cases), the model has been proven robust and accurate in most of the cases tested. In particular, the parametric probability distribution assumed for ground terrain slopes fitted the actual histogram (derived from existing digital elevation models) in a range of three to five decades. Applications to blind baseline estimation and phase unwrapping are then briefly discussed. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the automatic extraction of the road network in dense urban areas using a few-meters resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The first part presents the proposed method, which is an adaptation of previous work to the specific case of urban areas. The major modifications are 1) the clique potentials of the Markov random field that extracts the road network are adapted and 2) a multiscale framework is used. Results on shutle mission and aerial SAR images with different resolutions are presented. The second part is dedicated to road extraction combining two SAR images taken with different flight directions (orthogonal and antiparallel passes), and the obtained improvement is analyzed. [Termes IGN] trajectographie (positionnement)Résumé : (Auteur) In repeat-pass synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry, the aproximations, allowing the phase-to-eight conversion, prevent high-resolution mapped relief. In this paper, we present a more general and exact formulation giving a new relationship between the interferogram phase and the target height. It is based on the interferometric SAR geometry and on a better expansion of the path length difference between the sensor and the target. This formulation emphasizes the impact of baseline uncertainties on digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy. A quantitative assessment of the required baseline accuracy is computed. The impact of orbital parameters, used in the new formulation, on interferogram generation is studied. Thus, a new simulator algorithm is developed and tested on a set of reference and simulated DEM examples. Examples of interferogram simulation and DEM generation validate this new approach in the case of a mountainous area in Mustang (Nepal). [Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper gives an introduction to multi-baseline polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) and shows experimental results obtained with a spacebome and an airborne SAR system. Conventional InSAR combines two SAR images of the same scene acquired from slightly different viewing angles. Pol-InSAR improves the performance of scalar InSAR by exploiting the wave polarisation, allowing a more sophisticated physical interpretation of SAR interferograms. The interferometric decomposition permits the identification of arbitrary scattering mechanisms in two interferometric SAR images and the optimisation of the interterometric coherence, using the identified mathematically independent phase centres related to these scattering mechanisms. Pol-InSAR is sensitive to the distribution of oriented objects in vegetation layers. It is demonstrated that the calculated scattering mechanisms have different vertical loci that can be related to certain vegetation structures. This technique allows for a more appropriate reconstruction of the quasi-three-dimensional spatial distribution of such scattering processes within natural media. Further, the effect of the baseline on the estimation of these scattering mechanisms is shown for the interferometric decomposition. Finally, the differential interferometric phase is calculated between the associated scattering mechanisms for all interferometric pairs and different polarisation states.
