[Termes IGN] TaïwanRésumé : (auteur) We focus herein on the location, characterization and the quantification of the most active structural feature of Taiwan: the Longitudinal Valley Fault that corresponds to the suture in between the Philippine and Eurasian Plates. In order to determine and monitor its present inter-seismic deformation, we focus on the Pingting Terraces area, situated in the South Longitudinal Valley (Eastern Taiwan). We first determine the structural geometry issued from both photo-interpretation deduced from new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) high-resolution Digital Terrain Model data that we acquired (34.78 km2 with 7.73 cm ground sampling distance), combined with geological field work. In order to characterize and quantify the present deformational patterns over the Pingting terraces, we used an InSAR time series Interferometry algorithm (MT-InSAR) applied to nine L-band SAR images from ALOS satellite acquired over the period 2007–2010. The unprecedented density of measurements (about 120 points per km2 for a total of 6,400 points) gives a continuous overview of the inter-seismic shallow deformation. The structural geometry combined with the mean velocity map (MT-InSAR) reveals two clear active faults situated above the scarps of the Pingting terraces and responsible for up to 7 and 20 mm/yr velocity offset along the radar line of sight. A temporal analysis of the deformation is performed with one measurement at each SAR acquisition date, giving major improvements in the characterization and quantification of the Longitudinal Valley active Fault trace. [Termes IGN] image LandsatRésumé : (auteur) Aboveground forest biomass estimation is an integral component for climate change, carbon stocks assessment, biodiversity and forest health. LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), specifically NASA’s Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS), PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), and Landsat data have been previously used in biomass estimation with promising results when used individually. In this manuscript, all three products are jointly utilized for the first time to assess their importance for deciduous biomass estimation. Results indicate that LVIS inputs are ranked as most important followed by PALSAR inputs. Particularly for PALSAR, scenes acquired in May and August were ranked higher compared to other months. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (auteur) Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has demonstrated its potential for high-density spatial mapping of ground displacement associated with earthquakes, volcanoes, and other geologic processes. However, this technique may be affected by the ionosphere, which can result in the distortions of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, phases, and polarization. Moreover, ionospheric effect has become and is becoming further significant with the increasing interest in low-frequency SAR systems, limiting the further development of InSAR technique. Although some research has been carried out, thorough analysis of ionospheric influence on true SAR imagery is still limited. Based on this background, this study performs a thorough investigation of ionospheric effect on InSAR through processing L-band ALOS-1/PALSAR-1 images and dual-frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) data over Hong Kong, where the phenomenon of ionospheric irregularities often occurs. The result shows that the small-scale ionospheric irregularities can cause the azimuth pixel shifts and phase advance errors on interferograms. Meanwhile, it is found that these two effects result in the stripe-shaped features in InSAR images. The direction of the stripe-shaped effects keep approximately constant in space for our InSAR dataset. Moreover, the GPS-derived rate of total electron content change index (ROTI), an index to reflect the level of ionospheric disturbances, may be a useful indicator for predicting the ionospheric effect for SAR images. This finding can help us evaluate the quality of SAR images when considering the ionospheric effect. [Termes IGN] retard troposphériqueRésumé : (Auteur) The differential ionospheric path delay is a major error source in L-band interferograms. It is superimposed to topography and ground deformation signals, hindering the measurement of geophysical processes. In this paper, we proceed toward the realization of an operational processor to compensate the ionospheric effects in interferograms. The processor should be robust and accurate to meet the scientific requirements for the measurement of geophysical processes, and it should be applicable on a global scale. An implementation of the split-spectrum method, which will be one element of the processor, is presented in detail, and its performance is analyzed. The method is based on the dispersive nature of the ionosphere and separates the ionospheric component of the interferometric phase from the nondispersive component related to topography, ground motion, and tropospheric path delay. We tested the method using various Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased-Array type L-band synthetic aperture radar interferometric pairs with different characteristics: high to low coherence, moving and nonmoving terrains, with and without topography, and different ionosphere states. Ionospheric errors of almost 1 m have been corrected to a centimeter or a millimeter level. The results show how the method is able to systematically compensate the ionospheric phase in interferograms, with the expected accuracy, and can therefore be a valid element of the operational processor.
