[Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) With the launch of the NOAA-15 satellite in May 1998, a new generation of passive microwave sounders was initiated. The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU), with 20 channels spanning the frequency range from 23-183 GHz, offers enhanced temperature and moisture sounding capability well beyond its predecessor, the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU). In addition, by utilizing a number of window channels on the AMSU, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expanded the capability of the AMSU beyond the original purpose and developed a new suite of products that tare generated through the Microwave Surface and Precipitation Products System (MSPPS). This includes precipitation rate, total precipitable water, land surface emissivity, and snow cover. Details on the current status of the retrieval algorithms (as of September 2004) are presented. These products are complimentary to similar products obtained from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMI) and the Earth Observing Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E). Due to the close orbital equatorial crossing time between NOAA-16 and the Aqua satellites, comparisons between several of the MSPPS products are made with AMSR-E. Finally, several application examples are presented that demonstrate their importance to weather forecasting and analysis, and climate monitoring. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The revision of the 1995 land cover dataset for the Vale do Sousa region, in the northwest of Portugal, was carried out by supervised classification of a multispectral image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) sensor. The nine reflective bands of ASTER were used, covering the spectral range from 0.52-2.43 um. The image was initially ortho-rectified and segmented into 51 186 objects, with an average object size of 135 pixels (about 3 ha). A total of 582 of these objects were identified for training nine land cover classes. The image was classified using an algorithm based on a fuzzy classifier, Support Vector Machines (SVM), K Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) and a Logistic Discrimination (LD) classifier. The results from the classification were evaluated using a set of 277 validation sites, independently gathered. The overall accuracy was 44.6%, for the fuzzy classifier. 70.5%, for the SVM, 60.9% for the K-NN and 72.2% for the LD classifier. The difficulty in discriminating between some of the forest land cover classes was examined by separability analysis and unsupervised classification with hierarchical clustering. The forest classes were found to overlap in the multi-spectral space defined by the nine ASTER bands used. [Termes IGN] Pays-BasRésumé : (Auteur) Thematic maps prepared from remotely sensed images require a statistical accuracy assessment. For this purpose, the k-statistic is often used. This statistic does not distinguish between whether one unit is classified as another, or vice versa. In this paper, the Bradley-Terry (BT) model is applied for accuracy assessment. This model compares categories pairwise. The probability of one class over another class is estimated as well as the expected values of class pixels. The study is illustrated with an Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer image from the Netherlands, to which a maximum-likelihood classification with the Euclidean distance is applied. An error matrix is generated using an IKONOS image from the same area as ground truth. It is shown to which degree the BT model extends the K-statistic. A comparison with the Mahalanobis distance is made. Standardization is carried out to overcome problems emerging from the fact that a common BT model does not include the number of correctly classified pixels. The study shows how the BT model serves as an alternative to the usual k-statistic. [Termes IGN] variableRésumé : (Auteur) Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is the result of the complex interactions between behavioural and structural factors (drivers) associated with the demand, technological capacity, social relations and the nature of the environment in question. Although no general theory of land use change exists, different disciplinary theories can help us to analyse aspects of LUCC in specific situations. However, paradigms and theories applied by the different disciplines are often difficult to integrate and their specific research results do not easily combine into an integrated understanding of LUCC. Geographical approaches often aim to identify the location of LUCC in a spatially explicit way, while socio-economic studies aim to understand the processes of LUCC, but often lack spatial context and interactions. The objective of this study is to integrate process information from a socioeconomic study into a geographical approach. First, a logistic regression analysis is performed on household survey data from interviews. In this approach the occurrence of the land use types corn, wet rice and banana is explained by a set of variables that are hypothesised to be explanatory for those land use types, with fields as the unit of analysis. The independent variables consist of household characteristics, like ethnicity and age, and plot and field information, like tenure, slope and travel time. The results of these analyses are used to identify key variables explaining land use choice, which subsequently are also collected at watershed level, using maps, census data and remote sensing imagery. Logistic regression analysis of this spatial dataset, where a ten percent sample of a 50 by 50 m grid was analysed, shows that the key variables identified in the household analysis are also important at the watershed level. Important drivers in the study area are, among others, slope, ethnicity, accessibility and place of birth. The differences in the contribution of the variables to the models at household and watershed level can be attributed to differences in spatial extent and data representation. Comparing the model with a mainstream geographical approach indicates that the spatial model informed by the household analysis gives a better insight in the actual processes determining land use than the mainstream geographic approach. [Termes IGN] similitudeRésumé : (Auteur) The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on the Terra satellite has demonstrated the capability to retrieve aerosol optical depths, surface bidirectional reflectance factors, and hemispherical reflectances over a wide variety of land surface types. In particular, multiangular imaging design has enabled the application of algorithms that minimize sensitivity of the aerosol retrievals to the brightness of the underlying surface. The novel aerosol algorithm that was developed prior to launch has had notable quantitative success. Over certain types, however, the approach contained obvious spatial artifacts, so a postlaunch refinement to the algorithm was implemented. It constrains the retrieved aerosol models and optical depths such that the implied angular shape of the surface hemispherical-directional reflectance factor (HDRF) is similar among all of the MISR wavelengths. This upgrade has resulted in three tangible benefits: (1) the .occurrence of outliers has been dramatically reduced, (2) correlations with AERosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) aerosol surnphotometer data are quantitatively improved, and (3) the quality of surface products is markedly enhanced. MISR Level 2 aerosol and surface products archived at the NASA Langley Atmospheric Sciences Data Center. Those having version numbers v0012 and higher incorporate this upgrade in the data processing software.
