[Termes IGN] LuneRésumé : (Auteur) The validation of in-orbit instrument performance requires both stability in calibration source and also calibration corrections to compensate for instrument changes. Unlike internal calibrations, the Moon offers an external source whose signal variance is predictable and nondegrading. This paper describes a method of validation using lunar observations scanning near full moon by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Flight Model (FM)-1 and FM-2 aboard the Terra satellite, FM-3 and FM-4 aboard the Aqua satellite, and, as of 2012, FM-5 aboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. Given the stability of the source, adjustments within the data set are based entirely on removing orbital effects. Lunar observations were found to require a consistent data set spanning at least two to three years in length to examine instrument stability due to the final step when lunar libration effects are addressed. Initial results show a 20% annual variability in the data set. Using this method, however, results show trends per data channel of 1.0% per decade or less for FM-1 through FM-4. Results for FM-5 are not included in this paper because a sufficient data record has not yet been collected. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The directional variation of land surface reflectance generates an apparent noise in the time series acquired from satellites with variable observation geometries, which can be corrected through appropriate modeling of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). In a previous paper, we described and validated the VJB method that estimates a target BRDF shape and corrects for directional effects and yet retains the high temporal resolution of the measurement. Here, we analyze its potential to measure the BRDF of targets at the 0.5-km resolution of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The description of the BRDF in the NASA MCD43A1 product shows very large temporal variations that are unrealistic. However, the reflectance time series, normalized to a standard observation geometry using this modeling, have a similar quality as those derived using VJB. Conversely, the MCD43A1 modeled reflectances for a nonstandard geometry are unrealistically variable. These results indicate that the standard BRDF model inversion used to derive the MCD43A1 product is underconstrained due to the limited directional sampling of the 16-day composite period. The apparent noise in the corrected reflectance time series is significantly larger than the one obtained at lower spatial resolution, and is very much a function of the spatial heterogeneity of the area surrounding the target. These results strongly indicate that the multitemporal MODIS measurement at high spatial resolution (0.5 km) is affected by a change in the effective resolution for off-nadir observation and by inaccurate registration. The resulting noise in the measurements precludes an accurate measurement of the BRDF at such a scale. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing is a useful tool set for monitoring changes in forest ecosystems, particularly remote and otherwise inaccessible tracts of tropical forest. To revisit findings of earlier satellite-based studies of phenological variation in Amazonian forests, the current study focused on the variation of vegetation indices (Vis) of French Guiana. Specifically, 12 years of VI data which had been treated for bi-directional effects were extracted from the archives of 2 particular satellite sensors: the SPOT VEGETATION instrument, and MODIS (the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). At the scale of the entire territory of French Guiana, as well as at 4 sites across the territory, VI data displayed strong seasonal patterns, with the dry season months having significantly higher VI estimates than the wet season months. As Vls are considered proxies for photosynthetic activity, those seasonal variations would seem to indicate leaf-Flushing across French Guiana's forests during the dry season months of September to October.
