[Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (auteur) The Shahr-e-Babak region located in the Kerman metallogenic belt is one of the high potential segments of Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc for porphyry copper and epithermal gold mineralization in the south of Iran. This high potential zone encompasses several porphyry copper deposits under exploitation, development and exploration stages. The aim of this study is to evaluate Landsat-8 data and comparison with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer data-sets for mapping hydrothermal alteration zones related to Cenozoic magmatic intrusions in Shahr-e-Babak region. Previous studies have proven the robust application of ASTER in lithological mapping and mineral exploration; nonetheless, the Landsat-8 data have high capability to map and detect hydrothermal alteration zones associated with porphyry copper and epithermal gold mineralization. In this investigation, several band combinations and multiplications, developed selective principal component analysis and image transformations were developed for discriminating hydrothermal alteration zones associated with porphyry copper mineralization using Landsat-8 data. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an improved classification and mapping of vegetation types for all of Japan by utilizing the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (MCD43A4 product) data were compared to the conventional Surface Reflectance (MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products) data for the classification of vegetation types: evergreen coniferous forest, evergreen broadleaf forest, deciduous coniferous forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, shrubs, herbaceous, arable; and non-vegetation. Very rich spectral and temporal features were prepared from MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Random Forests classifier was employed for the classification of vegetation types with the support of ground truth data prepared in the research. Accuracy metrics—confusion matrix, overall accuracy, and kappa coefficient calculated through 10-fold cross-validation approach—were used for quantitative comparison of MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. The cross-validation results indicated better performance of the MCD43A4 (Overall accuracy = 0.73; Kappa coefficient = 0.69) product than conventional MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products (Overall accuracy = 0.70; Kappa coefficient = 0.66) for the classification. McNemar’s test was also used to confirm a significant difference (p-value = 0.0003) between MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Based on these results, by utilizing the MCD43A4 features, a new vegetation map was produced for all of Japan. The newly produced map showed better accuracy than the extant, MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1) and Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations (GLCNMO) product in Japan. [Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (Auteur) Impervious surface area (ISA) is an important indicator for monitoring the intensity of human activity and ecological environment changes. Developing effective methods for estimation of ISA at different scales has thus been pursued by many scientists. The temporal mixture analysis (TMA), which is a variant of spectral mixture analysis that makes full use of the phenological information of different land cover types, is suitable for estimating the ISA fraction at a large scale. The existing TMA-based ISA fraction estimation methods rely on the assumption that pure pixels exist for all the endmembers, which, however, is not true in the case of coarse-resolution datasets. Moreover, the existing method cannot effectively differentiate bare soil from ISA effectively, which may lead to overestimation of the ISA fraction. To address these problems, we propose a new ISA estimation method based on TMA in this study, using a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) products, the GlobeLand30 product, and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) data. The proposed method contains four major steps. First, the MODIS NDVI time-series datasets and GlobeLand30 land cover product were used to create an NDVI temporal profile subset for the TMA model. Second, a preliminary ISA fraction map was derived on the basis of optimized endmember temporal profiles, which were generated by unmixing the selected NDVI temporal profile subset through an improved spatial-spectral preprocessing nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm (ISSPP-NMF). Then, the preliminary ISA fraction was further optimized by incorporating the EVI-adjusted night-time light index (EANTLI), which can mitigate both saturation problems and the blooming effect of the DMSP-OLS data. An effective threshold method was introduced in this step to reduce the impact of bare soil on the ISA estimation. Finally, the estimated fraction of ISA was evaluated through accuracy assessment. The proposed method was tested in two study areas, namely, Guangdong Province and the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of China, to prove its applicability in different regions. Effectiveness of the proposed method was proven through the comparison between the proposed method with traditional TMA-based methods. The results from these analyses indicate that the proposed method outperforms the others in ISA estimation, with an overall root mean square error (RMSE) of 9.2% and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.8872 in Guangdong and a RMSE of 8.9% and R2 of 0.8923 in YRD. This study also proves that the ISSPP-NMF method can produce more appropriate endmembers regardless of the existence of pure pixels. The post-processing with the EANLTI procedure can effectively reduce the bare soil effect in TMA-based ISA estimation. [Termes IGN] service écosystémiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mapping ecosystem services (ES) over large scales is important for environmental monitoring but is often prohibitively expensive and difficult. We test a hybrid, low-cost method of mapping ES indicators over large scales in Pará State, Brazil. Four ES indicators (vegetation carbon stocks, biodiversity index, soil chemical quality index and rates of water infiltration into soil) were measured in the field and then summarized spatially for regional land-cover classes derived from satellite imagery. The regionally mapped ES values correlated strongly with independent and local measures of ES. For example, regional estimates of the vegetation carbon stocks are strongly correlated with actual measures derived from field samples and validation data (significant anova test – p-value = 4.51e−9) and differed on average by only 20 Mg/ha from the field data. Our spatially-nested approach provides reliable and accurate maps of ES at both local and regional scales. Local maps account for the specificities of an area while regional maps provide an accurate generalization of an ES’ state. Such up-scaling methods infuse large-scale ES maps with localized data and enable the estimation of uncertainty of at regional scales. Our approach is first step towards the spatial characterization of ES at large and potentially global scales. [Termes IGN] politique de conservation (biodiversité)Résumé : (auteur) The growing access to Earth Observations and processing capabilities have stimulated the production of global and regional products that are commonly used to assess tree-covered habitats and their changes. The popularity of these products has led to their use for defining baselines and to assess progress in conserving natural habitats, in particular, in the context of the conservation targets to 2020 set by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. In this paper, we reviewed three tree cover products commonly used over Sub-Saharan Africa: (1) MODIS Vegetation Continuous Field percent tree cover map, (2) Global Forest Change map and (3) TREES product. Over a systematic sample of 2045 map subsets, each having a size of 10 × 10 km², we calculated the extent and change of tree cover from each product for the period between 2000 and 2010. Our statistical and spatial comparison shows noticeable discrepancies between the three products, which lead to uncertainties when assessing tree cover across varying ecosystems. These differences are highest in habitats where tree cover is fragmented or reaches medium density levels and overlap with areas of high economic development potential, where habitat changes are likely to occur in the near future. We discuss these findings in the context of using these remotely sensed tree cover products to support current global biodiversity conservation policies.
