[Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) Using accurate inputs of wind speed is crucial in wind resource assessment, as predicted power is proportional to the wind speed cubed. First, wind speeds retrieved from a series of 91 ERS-2 SAR and Envisat ASAR images, at moderate wind speeds (2–15 m s- 1), were validated against in situ measurements from an offshore mast in the North Sea. The wind direction input, necessary for SAR wind speed retrievals, was obtained from the meteorological mast and from a local gradient analysis of wind streaks in the SAR images. A wind speed standard deviation of not, vert, similar 1.1 m s- 1 was found when in situ wind directions were used. The use of local gradient wind directions yielded a standard deviation of not, vert, similar 1.3 m s- 1. Wind speeds retrieved from three geophysical model functions (CMOD-IFR2, CMOD4, and CMOD5) were compared. The best approximation to the in situ measurements of wind speed was found for CMOD-IFR2, despite a bias on the order of - 0.3 m s- 1. CMOD4 retrievals also underestimated the wind speed, whereas the bias on CMOD5 retrievals was negligible. Then, wind resource assessments were made from the SAR-based wind observations to show how errors in wind speed from the different SAR wind retrievals were reflected in the wind statistics. The mean wind speed, obtained for all of the 91 SAR scenes, was linked closely to the bias of SAR wind retrievals. Agreement to 1 15% of the in situ measurements was found for all the wind retrieval methods tested. The accuracy of power density estimates for the entire data set was evaluated by the standard deviation of SAR wind retrievals relative to the in situ measurements. SAR wind fields retrieved with CMOD-IFR2, using in situ wind direction inputs, exactly yielded the power density predicted from in situ measurements alone. The SAR-based wind resource assessment also corresponded well to predictions from longer time series of in situ measurements. This indicates that a reliable wind resource assessment may be achieved from a series of randomly selected SAR images. The findings presented here could be useful in future wind resource assessment based on SAR images. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Qualified ground control points (GCPs) are crucial in the geolocation of a remotely sensed image. If a region has no published map, the geographical coordinates of GCPs must be obtained indirectly. Although these can be re-constructed from a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image using sensor position and velocity, this conventional method does not provide accurate GCPs owing to the variable elevations of actual topography. We propose an inverse geolocation method for GCPs by SAR simulation. This improves the accuracy of extracted GCPs by accommodating topographic effects, and requires a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and SAR with precise orbit data. The errors in the northing derive mainly from the imaging pulse time, and were improved by applying an azimuth time correction. In this study ERS SAR data with precise Delft orbit and shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) DEM were used. Mean values for the planimetric distance error in the GCPs were 4.1 and 5.4 m with standard deviations of 10.6 and 16.9 m in northing and easting, respectively. The obtained GCPs were applied to an IRS image for geo-rectification, and the result was mean image positional errors of 3.6 and 2.7 m with standard deviations of 8.4 and 15.4 m in northing and easting, respectively. The root mean square errors are 9.0 and 15.3 m in northing and easting, respectively. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to assess the contribution of ENVISAT ASAR data for the monitoring of the littoral plains of Kourou and Saint Laurent du Maroni (French Guyana). It presents results of qualitative and quantitative analyses of SAR ERS and ASAR ENVISAT data based on the following comparative criteria for landscape types discrimination: 1- Comparison between SAR ERS and ASAR ENVISAT in same configuration acquisition (mode IS2), 2- Seasonal influences (dry vs rainy season effects), 3- Incidence angle influences (exploitation of ASAR ENVISAT incidence angle range), 4- Polarization influences (exploitation of ASAR ENVISAT Image and Alternating Polarization modes data). The calibration of the different considered radar images allows their inter comparison in order to obtain information about landscape type's properties (dielectric, moistures, real evolutions) and on homogeneous parcel of land. The study showed that different parameters, like the season, the incidence angle, and the polarization, strongly influence the radar signal observed over such landscape types. In addition, results show that ASAR-IS2 mode, similar to ERS-SAR configuration ensures the continuity of SAR ERS-1&2 for land surface monitoring. However, it arises that discrimination between various types of landscape are confusing when analysing the backscattering coefficient values alone. The backscattering coefficients only cannot allow discriminating all the different landscape classes. Other parameters like texture, structure, geographical position, form and size are needed for landscape type's discrimination from radar images. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic mapping of built-up areas from a multitemporal interferometric ERS-1/2 Tandem dataset was studied. The image data were segmented into homogeneous regions, and the regions were classified as built-up areas, forests, and open areas using their mean intensity and coherence values and additional contextual information. Compared with a set of reference points, an overall classification accuracy of 97 percent was achieved. The classification process was highly automatic and resulted in homogeneous regions resembling a map drawn by a human interpreter. The feasibility of the imagery for dividing built-up areas further into subclasses was also investigated. The results suggest that low-rise areas, high-rise areas, and industrial areas are difficult to distinguish from each other. On the other hand, a correlation between the building density, the proportion of land covered with buildings, and intensity/coherence in the image data was found. The dataset thus appeared to be promising for classifying built-up areas into subclasses according to building density. [Termes IGN] zone polaireRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne single-polarization C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is widely used to gather information about the state of the sea ice cover in the polar regions. C-band is regarded as a reasonable choice for all-season monitoring capabilities. For specific mapping tasks, however, other frequency hands can be more suitable. In the first part of this paper, the summary of a literature study dealing with the utilization of L-band SAR imagery for sea ice monitoring is presented. Investigations reveal that if deformation features such as ice ridges, rubble fields, and brash ice are to be mapped, L-band radar is superior in a number of cases. The second part of this paper addresses the comparison of JERS-1 and ERS-1 SAR images that were acquired over sea ice east of Svalbard and along the east coast of Greenland. The effects of the different frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles of the two SAR Systems are discussed. It is demonstrated that the images of both sensors complement one another in the analysis of ice conditions, resulting in a more detailed view of the sea ice cover state.
