[Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to use Landsat Thematic Mapper TM data combined with surface measurements for mapping water quality parameters of Burullus Lake. Water samples were collected in the field at the same time of satellite image acquisition (April, 1997). TM bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and band ratios 1/4, 3/2, 2/1, 4/2, 4/3, 3/4, 7/5 and principal components of TM bands 1-4 (PC1 and PC2) were compared with in situ measurements and laboratory analysis of water samples. The water quality of interest included, Cl-, K+, Na+, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Salinity, Secchi disc and water depth. Also, the percentage of organic matter in bottom sediments and texture (sand, silt, clay) analyses are used in the evaluation processes. Correlation and regression models were developed between each of the water quality parameter measurements and the radiance of image data. Some water quality parameters were significantly correlated with TM radiance data. Subsequently, multiple linear regression models were used to prepare digital cartographic products depicting the water quality over the entire study area. Earth observation data can help to detect changes automatically in extensive areas. In a wetland area in Northern Germany different change detection methods have been tested to detect wetland restoration processes, especially succession of wetland and moorland vegetation over 11 years. Therefore a change detection method based on a selective principal component analysis followed by a fuzzy membership function introduced by Weiers et al. (2001). was tested with dual date Landsat TM/ETM+ images. As comparison vegetation maps and Colour-infrared (CIR)-aerial photographs were analysed. The main objectives were to find out (1) if changes, especially vegetation changes, can be detected on the study area by the method as described by Weiers et al. (2001), (2) which changes can be detected and (3) which is the best method on the study area, respectively: the Landsat change detection method, the analysis of vegetation maps or the interpretation of CIR-aerial photographs. For detecting vegetation changes the most detailed information were achieved by interpreting CIR-aerial photographs, while the Landsat change detection method turned out to be more suitable for detecting changes of wetness. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents an application of object-oriented techniques for habitat classification based on remotely sensed images and ancillary data. The study reports the results of habitat mapping at multiple scales using Earth Observation (EO) data at various spatial resolutions and multi temporal acquisition dates. We investigate the role of object texture and context in classification as well as the value of integrating knowledge from ancillary data sources. Habitat maps were produced at regional and local scales in two case studies; Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and Wye Downs, United Kingdom. At the regional scale, the main task was the development of a consistent object-oriented classification scheme that is transferable to satellite images for other years. This is demonstrated for a time series of Landsat TM/ETM+ scenes. At the local scale, investigations focus on the development of appropriate object-oriented rule networks for the detailed mapping of habitats, e.g. dry grasslands and wetlands using very high resolution satellite and airborne scanner images. The results are evaluated using statistical accuracy assessment and visual comparison with traditional field-based habitat maps. Whereas the application of traditional pixel-based classification result in a pixelised (salt and pepper) representation of land cover, the object-based classification technique result in solid habitat objects allowing easy integration into a vector-GIS for further analysis. The level of detail obtained at the local scale is comparable to that achieved by visual interpretation of aerial photographs or field-based mapping and also retains spatially explicit, fine scale information such as scrub encroachment or ecotone patterns within habitats. [Termes IGN] routeRésumé : (Auteur) We present results of an analysis of deforestation at a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Parque National Yasuni, located in the rainforests of eastern Ecuador using multitemporal Landsat TM and ETM+ satellite imagery. Using survival analysis, we assessed both current and future trends in deforestation rates, and investigated the impact of spatial, cultural, and economic factors on deforestation. These factors included the distance from roads, rivers research facilities, oil facilities, markets and towns, and land ownership by colonists, native inhabitants, and an oil company. We found the annual rate of deforestation is currently only 0.11%, but that this rate is increasing with time and, assuming that the trend of increasing rate of forest loss continues, we would predict that by 2063, 50% of the forest within 2 km of an oil access road will be lost to unhindered colonization and anthropogenic conversion. The Quechua colonists are associated with areas of the highest rate of deforestation, followed by the native Huaorani and the lowest region of deforestation was in areas occupied by a local oil company. By far, the strongest predictor of where deforestation is predicted to occur was proximity to the road. Proximity to research sites, oil facilities, market, and rivers significantly decreases deforestation rates, and proximity to towns significantly increases deforestation rates. [Termes IGN] structure géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Practical and economie constraints prompt the need of obtaining structural geological information with reduced field effort. This paper prescrits a methodological strategy for deriving such information from remotely sensed (RS) images coupled with empirical tectonic models as a way of bridging from regional to local scales. The hypothesis that spatial organisation displayed by small-scale tectonic structures (and not only the large ones) could be correlated with the arrangement of natural linear features observed on RS imagery to allow inferences on the local geological structure was tested. Azimuth direction and subsidiarily length were found to be the most appropriate attributes for spatial characterisation and comparative analyses of line sets. Inferences made of tectonic structures and respective directional arrangements were based on a combination of qualitative (visual analysis of histograms) and statistical methods (non-parametric goodness-of-fit tests). The numerical evaluation of the results of tests expressed in terms of average degree of matching (91% to 95%) and errors (5% of omission errors and 31.2% of commission errors) showed a reasonable efficiency of the inferential approach in predicting the structural geological settings in lithological units as well as in mid-size areas (50 to 80 km 2 approximately). Potential applications of the inferential approach in terrain evaluation schemes, particularly for planning and engineering-related purposes, are envisaged.
