[Termes IGN] MatlabRésumé : (Editeur) Extraction of information from satellite images is a solution for countries without up-to-date base maps. Such images can be easily obtained and cover vast areas. Information is mostly extracted using multispectral classification, but many methods have been developed. The authors examined 'fuzzy classification' and found it more accurate and requiring less computing time than other methods. [Termes IGN] Nevada (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The paper presents the results of an extended analysis of image data sets acquired during the tandem-orbit configuration in 1999 for the purposes of radiometric cross-calibration of the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensors. Earlier work focused on the tandem pair for the Railroad Valley Playa, Nevada (RVPN) site to tie down the Landsat-5 TM calibration based on the more accurate Landsat-7 ETM+ calibration. This paper describes new results based on as many as eight tandem image pairs. The additional tandem images are of primarily vegetated areas for which little or no ground reference data were available. Increasing the number of tandem pairs yielded results for the Landsat 5 TM gain coefficients within approximately +1% of the RVPN-based results in spectral bands 1, 2, 3 and 7, and within -2% and -4% of the RVPN-based results for spectral bands 4 and 5, respectively. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Coal fire has been found to be a serious problem worldwide in coal mining processes. Coal fire burns valuable coal reserve and prevents access to proven reserve in the affected area. Moreover, it leads to severe environmental degradation of the region by an overall increase of the ambient atmospheric temperature, by the emission of obnoxious gases (e.g., SO2, NO, CO, CH4) along fissures and cracks and by causing land subsidence and collapse. Jharia Coalfield, Jharkhand, India, is known for being the exclusive storehouse of prime coking coal as well as for hosting the maximum number of known coal fires among all the coalfields in the country. In this paper, some of the important issues of coal fire mapping from satellite thermal IR data have been addressed in particular reference to Jharia Coalfield. Namely, these are: retrieval of true spectral radiance from raw digital data using scene-specific calibration coefficients of the detectors, thermal emissivity of surface materials to obtain kinetic temperature at each ground resolution cell of satellite data, field-based modelling of pixel-integrated temperature for differentiating surface and subsurface fire pixels in Landsat TM thermal IR data, identification of surface coal fire locations from reflected IR data and lateral propagation of coal fire. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The preservation of spectral characteristics and the retention of high spatial resolution are two key issues in image fusion. Different applications may require different balances between the two. However, the limitation is that only one fused result is possible for most of the commonly used fusion methods; users have no control over how much spatial detail or spectral information should be retained. Both quantitative and qualitative criteria, including mean, standard deviation, entropy, average gradient, spectral distortion, correlation coefficient and visual assessment, were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed fuser. A SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) panchromatic image and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images were employed in the evaluation. The results show that the proposed method is slightly better than, or comparable to, commonly used image fusion methods, including Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), and two other wavelet-based fusion methods with replacement and with selection strategies, in terms of spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention. Moreover, the proposed method can achieve a wide range of balances between spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention, and thus is applicable in different applications.
