[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach aimed at a better understanding of the state of pollution of the Black Sea coastal zone is suggested. It consists of the combined use of all available quasi-concurrent satellite information (NOAA AVHRR, TOPEX/ Poseidon, Jason-1, Terra/Aqua MODIS, Envisat ASAR, ERS-2 SAR and QuikSCAT) and was first applied during an operational seawater monitoring campaign in the coastal zone of the northeastern Black Sea conducted in 2006. The monitoring is based on daily receiving, processing and analysis of data different in nature (microwave radar images, optical and infrared data), resolution and surface coverage. These data allow us to retrieve information on seawater pollution, sea surface and air-sea boundary layer conditions, seawater temperature and suspended matter distributions, chlorophyll-a concentration, mesoscale water dynamics, near-surface wind, and surface wave fields. Such an approach helps in oil spill detection with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), especially in distinguishing oil slicks from look-alikes. The focus is on coastal seawater circulation mechanisms and their impact on the evolution of pollutants. Assuming that the intensity level can be described by a transport–diffusion equation, the proposed approach is based on variational assimilation of image observations within a simple transport–diffusion model. This approach permits to retrieve the current velocity field from a sequence of satellite images. Results of processing synthetic data and real NOAA-AVHRR satellite images are presented and commented. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this paper is to study, on a weekly basis, the explanatory power of one satellite-based measurement, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), for wheat yield modelling in 40 census agricultural regions (CAR) in the Canadian Prairies during the whole growing season using 16 years of NOAA AVHRR satellite data (between 1987 and 2002). We also explore the relative value of NDVI compared with a land-based measurement, the Cumulative Moisture Index (CMI). By developing a series of weekly wheat yield models over the course of the growing season, we are able to determine the accuracy of different models. Our findings indicate that NDVI possesses explanatory power 4 weeks earlier in the season than CMI. [Termes IGN] stabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The weekly 0.144° resolution global vegetation index from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) has a long history, starting late 1981, and has included data derived from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors onboard NOAA-7, -9, -11, -14, -16, -17, and -18 satellites. Even after postlaunch calibration and mathematical smoothing and filtering of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from AVHRR visible and near-infrared channels, the time series of global smoothed NDVI (SMN) still has apparent discontinuities and biases due to sensor degradation, orbital drift [equator crossing time (ECT)], and differences from instrument to instrument in band response functions. To meet the needs of the operational weather and climate modeling and monitoring community for a stable long-term global NDVI data set, we investigated adjustments to substantially reduce the bias of the weekly global SMN series by simple and efficient algorithms that require a minimum number of assumptions about the statistical properties of the interannual global vegetation changes. Of the algorithms tested, we found the adjusted cumulative distribution function (ACDF) method to be a well-balanced approach that effectively eliminated most of the long-term global-scale interannual trend of AVHRR NDVI. Improvements to the global and regional NDVI data stability have been demonstrated by the results of ACDF-adjusted data set evaluated at a global scale, on major land classes, with relevance to satellite ECT, at major continental regions, and at regional drought detection applications.
