[Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyses and maps the spatial distribution of soil moisture using remote sensing: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat-Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) images. The study was carried out in the central Ebro river valley (northeast Spain), and examines the spatial relationships between the distribution of soil moisture and several meteorological and geographical variables following a long, intense dry period (winter 2000). Soil moisture estimates were obtained using thermal, visible and near-infrared data and by applying the 'triangle method', which describes relationships between surface temperature (Ts) and fractional vegetation cover (Fr). Low differences were found between the soil moisture estimates obtained using AVHRR and ETM+ sensors. Soil moisture estimated using remote sensing is close to estimations obtained from climate indices. This fact, and the high similarity between estimations of both sensors, suggests the reasonable reliability of soil moisture remote sensing estimations. Moreover, in estimations from both sensors the spatial distribution of soil moisture was largely accounted for by meteorological variables, mainly precipitation in the dry period. The results indicate the high reliability of remote sensing for determining areas affected by water deficits and for quantifying drought intensity. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) The interannual variation of global vegetation net primary production (NPP), which is crucial to understanding the role of terrestrial biosphere in the global carbon cycle, is still poorly understood. Currently, remote sensing emerges as a useful tool for estimating NPP through monitoring global vegetation distribution and growth. The objective of this study was to utilize the multi-year monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset of 1987-1997 from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) to investigate the interannual variation in productivity of global vegetation due to climate variation, human activities, and environmental events. A decision tree algorithm based on simple metrics (minimum, maximum, mean and amplitude) was employed to classify the global vegetation from NDVI data and obtain the annual vegetation growth areas. Then, annual NPP was computed using the annual vegetation growth areas and the predefined NPP coefficients given in a 1990 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCQ) report. The NPP exhibited a slightly increasing trend through the 11 years. However, interannual variations were observed to be mainly determined by variation in growth of tropical and temperate evergreen forests. These fluctuations were consistently correlated to El Niño/La Niña events. Although the interannual variation in primary productivity of global vegetation is expected to influence the atmospheric C02 concentration over the one-decade period, it is unlikely to have solely caused the anomalously low growth in 1992-1993. The adopted methodology enabled close examination of variability in vegetation growth at the biome scale as well as at global scale. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The distinct contrast between the reflectance of solar radiation in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) channel 3 (3.75 um) by clouds and by bright surfaces provides an effective means of cloud discrimination over snow/ice surfaces. A threshold function for the top- of- atmosphere (TOA) albedo in channel 3 (r3) is derived and used to develop an improved method for cloud discrimination over snow/ice surfaces that makes explicit use of TOA r3. Corrections for radiance anisotropy and temperature effects are required to derive accurate values of r3 from satellite measurements and to utilize the threshold function. It has been used to retrieve cloud cover fractions from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-14 AVHRR data over the Arctic Ocean and over the North Slope of Alaska (NSA) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site in Barrow, Alaska. The retrieved cloud fractions are in good agreement with SHEBA (Surface HEat Budget of the Arctic Ocean) surface visual observations and with NSA cloud radar and lidar observations, respectively. This method can be utilized to improve cloud discrimination over snow/ice surfaces for any satellite sensor with a channel near 3.7 um. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional methods of land cover classification and mapping are limited in providing spatial data on the uncertainty of map labels. In this paper, we present a hybrid classifier approach using Decision Tree (DT) and ARTMAP neural network to providing confidence or uncertainty information via majority voting and other rules. The hybrid classifier is tested with AVHRR data to mapping land cover of North America. The two classifiers (DT and ARTMAP) tend to make predictive errors in different contexts. They show 68% agreement in classifying land cover of North America. A set of rules is developed to assign class labels for pixels where the two classifiers disagree. Levels of confidence in the hybrid classification derived from their individual voting (ARTmAP) and probability (DT) are used to assign confidence. The approach outlined in this paper produces two products a hybrid classification map as well as a confidence map based on the two classification schemes. The hybrid approach seems suitable to tackle a variety of classification problems in remote sensing and may ultimately aid map users in making more informed decisions. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The present study focuses on the development of a new land cover classification product over France at 1 km resolution. It is based on data sets from the Earth observing system SPOT4/VEGETATION. The satellite measurements are aimed at supporting regional efforts to set up global mosaics on new land cover products. They have been acquired in the frame of the Global Land Cover 2000 project. The instrument design relies on advanced technology, which leads to an improved radiometric and geometric resolution data. Such characteristics allow taking full benefit of the daily repetitiveness of the VEGETATION wide field-of-view sensor without the drawback of a variable pixel size on the image edge. Several physical processing steps are successively operated to the images on a per-pixel basis to remove detector blindness, to filter cloud contamination, and finally to correct both atmospheric and surface anisotropy effects. A new thematic map using the K-means clustering method has been built. First, the results of the satellite-based land cover classification has been successfully compared with the Coordination of Information on the Environment (CORINE) database which serves as a reference to appraise the reliability of the study. Then, it has been inter-compared with land cover products derived from MODIS and AVHRR sensors. For this, an aggregative scheme particularly focused on major land units (forest, grassland, cropland) adopted in order to yield a whole mapping at the same geographic projection and space resolution. The discrepancies between maps enhance the quality of the proposed product, thanks to the use of advanced data processing and a more appropriate method.
