[Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover. It focuses on fully automatic extraction and uses an explicit object model. Compared to other approaches, the most prominent features of this thesis are the exploitation of the scale-space behavior of roads and the use of contextual information by means of global context regions and local relations between roads and other objects. The approach aims at road extraction in open rural areas. Panchromatic aerial images with a pixel size of approximately 0.2 to 0.5 meter on the ground serve as input data for the automatic extraction. The proposed approach makes use of several versions of the aerial image with different resolution. Roads are modelled as a network of intersections and links between these intersections. For different so-called global contexts, i.e., rural, forest, and urban area, the model defines relations between background objects and road objects. These relations, e.g., that a tree casts a shadow on a road-segment, determine so-called local contexts. These local contexts are modelled differently depending on the global context regions. An automatic segmentation of the aerial image into different global contexts by means of texture classification is used to focus the extraction on the most promising regions. Additionally, it allows to predict in which parts of the image the results will be most reliable. For the actual extraction of the roads edges are extracted in the original high resolution image (pixel size 0.2-0.5 m) and lines in an image of reduced resolution (pixel size 2-4 m). Using both resolution levels and explicit knowledge about roads hypotheses for road-segments are generated. They are grouped iteratively into longer segments. In addition to pure grouping criteria also knowledge about the local context and so-called "Ribbon-Snakes" are used to bridge gaps. For the construction of the road network, intersections are extracted. The examples presented and the results of an evaluation based on manually plotted reference data show the efficiency of the approach. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) An empirical investigation into the effects of JPEG compression on the accuracy of photogrammetric point determination (PPD) is described. A pair of black-and-white aerial photographs of a city, taken at a scale of 1:8000, was selected and scanned at a resolution of 25 m. Eighteen image points were measured with the ISDM module of an Intergraph digital photogrammetric workstation (DPW), and the bundle adjustment of a single model was performed using WuGAPSsGps (Wuhan GPSsupported bundle block adjustment software). In processing various JPEG compressed images with Q-factors from I to 100, the accuracy of the 3D coordinates of the pass points was assessed and compared with that obtained from the original images (i.e., without compression). The empirical results show that, when the compression ratios are under 10, the compressed image is near-lossless. In other words, the visual quality of JPEG compressed images is still excellent and the accuracy of manual image mensuration is essentially not influenced. However, no indication can be found from the results that a compression of 10 is the critical value or the optimum compression level for PPD. Indeed, it is clear that the degradation of accuracy in PPD is almost linear.
