[Termes IGN] orthoimageRésumé : (auteur) ZiYuan-3 (ZY-3, meaning Resource-3) is China's first civilian multispectral satellite with high-resolution stereo mapping capability. The along-track stereo images of ZY-3 allow the generation of digital elevation models (DEMs) for various mapping applications. This article evaluated the precision of the derived stereo DEM and orthoimages of ZY-3 data for a test site in Northeastern China. Pixel offset and GPS survey data were used to evaluate the image products. Orthoimages were derived by incorporating rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) of the satellite orbits and the reference DEMs, including the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) global digital elevation model (GDEM) and ZY-3 stereo elevation model. The generations of orthoimages were categorised into four approaches depending on the RPCs, control points and/or reference DEMs used. When only the ASTER GDEM was used, the derived orthoimages of the forward and backward viewing sensors showed clear pixel offsets against the GPS check points (CKPs). For example, the offsets of the orthoimage derived using forward-looking image were 13·58 and 26·50 m, in x (easting) and y (northing) directions, respectively. These results also indicated that the pixel offset vectors between the forward and backward orthoimages was systematic which was caused by the error in the RPCs. The second and third approaches were to generate the ZY-3 stereo DEMs first, with and without the use of ground control points (GCPs), and then used the stereo DEMs to generate the orthoimages of the forward and backward looking images. The forth approach used both GCPs and ASTER GDEM to generate the orthoimages. The results showed the use of four GCPs in the process improved the accuracy of the orthoimages. Therefore, ZY-3 can deliver the DEM and orthoimage products to meet the accuracy requirement of the national 1 : 50 000 mapping with four well distributed GCPs. [Termes IGN] San DiegoRésumé : (Auteur) Two GEOBIA approaches are compared for their effectiveness in mapping dead trees within island montane forests of Southern California: a spatial contextual approach using an artificial neural network classifier, and a segmentation and multi-pixel classification approach. Both approaches are tested with multitemporal aerial orthoimagery having varying spatial resolutions. Spectral transformation inputs are also tested. An object-based accuracy assessment is conducted. Accuracies range between 30 percent to 90 percent for the dead tree class and are significantly higher for the spatial-contextual approach. Inclusion of spectral transforms increased accuracies by 5 percent for the true object-based approach, up to 13 percent for the spatial contextual approach, and reduced commission error up to 10 percent for both approaches. Masking techniques increased accuracies of the spatial contextual approach by 20 percent. With manual editing, the most accurate maps of individual live and dead trees from the spatial contextual approach are suitable for studying spatio-temporal trends in montane conifer mortality. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In June 2013, heavy precipitation triggered a large earthflow of several million cubic meters in a small village in Austria. A bundle of technologies was applied to monitor and document the landslide, such as geophysical methods (geoelectrics, inclinometer, soil moisture, and soil temperature) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements. Additionally, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used for the periodical assessment of the landslide process. In total, nine flights were performed with a multicopter equipped with a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) that delivered several thousands of images. Based on these images and detailed GNSS measurements of the landslide area, orthophotos as well as generated Digital Surface Models (DSMs) with an accuracy of less than ±10 cm resulted. Fissure tracking, flow direction and velocity, and mass balances as well as the construction progress of the protection and mitigation measures were derived from these data sets. The application of the UAV turned out to be a cost- and time-effective tool for landslide-monitoring that provides researchers and engineers with accurate high-resolution geodata. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (auteur) Modern satellites tag their images with geolocation information using GPS and star tracking systems. Depending on the quality of the geopositioning equipment, errors may range from a few meters to tens of meters on the ground. At the current state of art, there is no established method to automatically correct these errors limiting the large-scale joint utilization of cross-platform satellite images. In this paper, an automatic geolocation correction framework that corrects images from multiple satellites simultaneously is presented. As a result of the proposed correction process, all the images are effectively registered to the same absolute geodetic coordinate frame. The usability and the quality of the correction framework are demonstrated through a 3-D surface reconstruction application. The 3-D surface models given by original satellite geopositioning metadata, and the corrected metadata, are compared. The quality difference is measured through an entropy-based metric applied to the orthographic height maps given by the 3-D surface models. Measuring the absolute accuracy of the framework is harder due to lack of publicly available high-precision ground surveys. However, the geolocation of images of exemplar satellites from different parts of the globe are corrected, and the road networks given by OpenStreetMap are projected onto the images using original and corrected metadata to demonstrate the improved quality of alignment.
