[Termes IGN] traitement automatique d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) An innovative methodology that combines central perspectives and panoramic gnomonic projections into an integrated bundle block adjustment is discussed. The use of both kinds of images generates metric products with a superior level of detail (image resolution) compared with conventional central perspectives alone, whilst achieving the accuracy of the latter. The entire methodology is intended as a low-cost solution to improving the ground sampling distance over that achievable with single exposures by conventional modern terrestrial cameras. Very high-resolution close-range images can be automatically generated and oriented with a rigorous multi-step procedure that integrates both types of images within a unified least squares adjustment. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed approach are analysed from both theoretical and practical points of view and illustrated through a series of examples. [Termes IGN] modélisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) There exist a number of techniques which are used to produce stereo panoramas, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, a new stereo-panorama generating system is presented which uses off-the-shelf stereo cameras. In addition to stereoviewing, the system offers the possibility of making geometric measurements. The benefits of such a system are: (a) overcoming the effects of moving objects in the images; (b) increased automation of matching and stitching; (c) simple geometric information extraction; and (d) equal resolution over the whole stereo panorama. The structure of the system is described, including system implementation, calibration, stereo-panorama generation, georeferencing, co-registration of multiple panoramas and 3D measurements. In addition, an experiment to evaluate the capability of the system in modelling 3D environments is reported. Evaluation results show that the system can produce a suitable 3D panoramic environment for the simultaneous 3D visualisation and measurement of objects, especially in urban areas. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Diverse applications can benefit from the integration of data acquired by a new generation of close-range imaging sensors with high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) geometric data. However, such integration requires increased automation and efficiency of image-data registration to guarantee adoption by users beyond the geomatics community. This paper presents a semi-automated method for registering terrestrial panoramic hyperspectral imagery with lidar models and conventional digital photography. The method relies on finding corresponding points between images acquired in significantly different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, from different viewpoints, and with different spatial resolution and geometric projections. Optimisation of the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) operator was required to ensure a sufficient number of homologous points, as well as a routine for eliminating false matches. A band selection routine maximises the number of points found while minimising the input data for SIFT. Three-dimensional object coordinates were derived in the lidar model and used as control points in a bundle block adjustment to determine the hyperspectral exterior orientation and intrinsic camera parameters. The method developed was applied to two datasets with different characteristics, and the results indicate that the proposed method is a time-saving alternative to manual approaches. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Panoramic hiking and skiing maps are popular among tourists and map collectors. Such three-dimensional (3D) maps allow for easy orientation and provide the observer with an immersive impression of the landscape to be discovered or remembered. The most impressive panoramic masterpieces are almost exclusively painted manually or with minor digital tool support. Software packages that allow modern cartographers to create 3D maps of comparable visual quality (semi-) automatically are currently not available. Computer graphics has developed a number of methods for painterly rendering, including imitating the characteristics of a panorama artist's brush stroke and raster-based methods that synthesize new texture from examples. In this article, the latter approach is explored, and the idea of creating terrain textures for arbitrary regions by reassembling them from pieces of scanned hand-painted masterworks is pursued. Panorama painters vary the appearance of land cover depending on terrain characteristics and viewing parameters. This article suggests how the example-based texture synthesis approach could be adapted to accommodate such dependencies. A case study of transferring the appearance of H.C. Berann's hand-painted panorama of the Swiss Jungfrau region to a digital panorama of a different region is presented. The case study shows that a number of previously unanticipated hurdles are encountered when using hand-painted panoramas as input to an example-based texture synthesis algorithm. By identifying the challenges of applying texture-by-example to panoramic map making and by suggesting possible solutions, the authors aim to promote the creation of more visually appealing and legible digital panoramic maps.
