The conventional deep convolutional neural networks based methods usually take the amplitude information of single-polarization SAR images as the input to learn hierarchical spatial features automatically, which may have difficulties in discriminating objects with similar texture but discriminative scattering patterns. Our novel deep learning framework, Deep SAR-Net, takes complex-valued SAR images into consideration to learn both spatial texture information and backscattering patterns of objects on the ground. On the one hand, we transfer the detected SAR images pre-trained layers to extract spatial features from intensity images. On the other hand, we dig into the Fourier domain to learn physical properties of the objects by joint time-frequency analysis on complex-valued SAR images. We evaluate the effectiveness of Deep SAR-Net on three complex-valued SAR datasets from Sentinel-1 and TerraSAR-X satellite and demonstrate how it works better than conventional deep CNNs, especially on man-made objects classes. The proposed datasets and the trained Deep SAR-Net model with all codes are provided. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Growing demand for wood products, combined with efforts to conserve natural forests, have supported a steady increase in the global extent of planted forests. Here, a two-phase sampling strategy for large-scale assessment of the total area and the total wood volume of fast-growing forest tree crops within agricultural land is presented. The first phase is performed using tessellation stratified sampling on high-resolution remotely sensed imagery and is sufficient for estimating the total area of plantations by means of a Monte Carlo integration estimator. The second phase is performed using stratified sampling of the plantations selected in the first phase and is aimed at estimating total wood volume by means of an approximation of the first-phase Horvitz-Thompson estimator. Vegetation indices from Sentinel-2 are exploited as freely available auxiliary information in a linear regression estimator to improve the design-based precision of the estimator based on the sole sample data. Estimators of the totals and of the design-based variances of total estimators are presented. A simulation study is developed in order to check the design-based performance of the two alternative estimators under several artificial distributions supposed for poplar plantations (random, clustered, spatially trended). An application in Northern Italy is also reported. The regression estimator turns out to be invariably better than that based on the sole sample information. Possible integrations of the proposed sampling scheme with conventional national forest inventories adopting tessellation stratified sampling in the first phase are discussed. [Termes IGN] parallaxeRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes a cloud detection algorithm for Earth observation images obtained by pushbroom satellite imagers. The pushbroom technology induces an inter-band acquisition delay leading to a parallax effect for the clouds. We propose a method exploiting this characteristic thanks to the analysis of the inter-band disparity. Several other features discriminating clouds are also defined and all are merged to build a robust a contrario statistical decision. Experiments applied on scenes acquired by various pushbroom satellites such as Sentinel-2, RapidEye and WorldView-2 show the effectiveness of the proposed method. In particular, we demonstrate a balanced accuracy rate close to 98% for cloud and non cloud classification for Sentinel-2 images. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) This article outlines a semi‐autonomous approach for using a fusion of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and optical remote sensing data to identify and measure small impoundments (SIs) and their dams. Quantifying such water bodies as hydrologic network features is critical for ecosystem and species conservation, emergency management, and water resource planning; however, such features are incompletely mapped at national and state levels. By merging an airborne LiDAR‐derived point cloud with a normalized water index using airborne optical imagery we demonstrate an improvement upon single‐source methods for identifying these water bodies; classification accuracies increased over 10% by using this multi‐source fusion method. Furthermore, the method presented here illustrates a cost‐effective pathway to improve the National Inventory of Dams (NID) and includes a framework for estimating dam heights, with results showing strong correlations between derived dam heights and those recorded in the NID (r=.78). With the steady increase in available LiDAR coverage, the 87,000+ dams in the NID could be updated using this technique, a method which could also be expanded for global inventories of SIs and dams. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) In this article, a methodology to retrieve the precipitable water vapor (PWV) from a differential interferometric time series is presented. We used external data provided by atmospheric weather models (e.g., ERA-Interim reanalysis) to constrain the initial state and by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to phase ambiguities elimination introduced by phase unwrapping algorithm. An iterative least-square is then used to solve the optimization problem. We applied the presented methodology to two time series of differential PWV maps estimated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Sentinel-1A, over the southwest part of the Appalachian Mountains (USA). The results were validated using an independent GNSS data set and also compared with atmospheric weather prediction data. The GNSS PWV observations show a strong correlation with the estimated PWV maps with a root-mean-square error less than 1 mm. These results are very encouraging, particularly for the meteorology community, providing crucial information to assimilate into numerical weather models and potentially improve the forecasts.
