[Termes IGN] Référence-3DRésumé : (auteur) On the one hand, onboard SPOT 5, the HRS instrument systematically collects stereopairs around the Globe since 2002. Each stereopair can encompass an area up to 600 km x 120 km within a single pass (i.e. 72 000 km² stereoscopic strips). Covering now more than 120 millions sq.km of the Earth landmasses, SPOT 5 stereoscopic imagery has become one of main satellite data sources for accurate DEM extraction, at least where the cloud coverage leaves a chance to do so ! On the other hand, the TerraSAR-X satellite, launched in June 2007, is able to collect radar data through the clouds in several modes. An approach to extract height information by radargrammetry was developed, and the commercial distribution of Digital Elevation Models based on TerraSAR-X StripMap and SpotLight Modes (resp. 3m and 1m resolution) has started in 2010. To improve the overall height accuracy of the DEM, acquisitions from both orbit directions are utilised, each point on the ground being thus imaged at least 4 times by TerraSAR-X. Since 2002, Spot Image and French National Cartographic Institute (IGN) are building a worldwide database called Elevation30/Reference3D™, which includes a Digital Elevation Model at 1-arc-second resolution (DTED level 2) extracted from HRS stereopairs. To answer the wide demand of precise DEMs over Tropical and Northern areas, frequently covered by clouds, a study was performed to integrate StripMap radargrammetric TerraSAR-X data into the Reference3D process, and two prototype products were issued, over Colombia and Congo areas. During this experiment, efforts have been made to stick to technical steps that could be integrated within a standardized production process, in order to keep offering affordable prices while maintaining a high standard of horizontal and vertical accuracy. The DEMs extracted from TerraSAR-X and HRS proved extremely consistent with each other, showing a mean difference of 0.80m. This allows to propose a unified Elevation30 product to the users, with a guaranteed accuracy materialized into the product through a dedicated vertical Accuracy Commitment Mask. [Termes IGN] SURF (algorithme)Résumé : (auteur) The HRS (High Resolution Stereoscopic) instrument carried on SPOT 5 enables quasi-simultaneous acquisition of stereoscopic images on wide segments – 120 km wide – with two forward and backward-looking telescopes observing the Earth with an angle of 20° ahead and behind the vertical. For 8 years IGN (Institut Géographique National) has been developing techniques to achieve spatiotriangulation of these images. During this time the capacities of bundle adjustment of SPOT 5 – HRS spatial images have largely improved. Today a global single block composed of about 20,000 images can be computed in reasonable calculation time. The progression was achieved step by step: first computed blocks were only composed of 40 images, then bigger blocks were computed. Finally only one global block is now computed. In the same time calculation tools have improved: for example the adjustment of 2,000 images of North Africa takes about 2 minutes whereas 8 hours were needed two years ago. To reach such a result a new independent software was developed to compute fast and efficient bundle adjustments. In the same time equipment – GCPs (Ground Control Points) and tie points – and techniques have also evolved over the last 10 years. Studies were made to get recommendations about the equipment in order to make an accurate single block. Tie points can now be quickly and automatically computed with SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features) techniques. Today the updated equipment is composed of about 500 GCPs and studies show that the ideal configuration is around 100 tie points by square degree. With such an equipment, the location of the global HRS block becomes a few meters accurate whereas non adjusted images are only 15 m accurate. This paper will describe the methods used in IGN Espace to compute a global single block composed of almost 20,000 HRS images, 500 GCPs and several million of tie points in reasonable calculation time. Many advantages can be found to use such a block. Because the global block is unique it becomes easier to manage the historic and the different evolutions of the computations (new images, new GCPs or tie points). The location is now unique and consequently coherent all around the world, avoiding steps and artifacts on the borders of DSMs (Digital Surface Models) and OrthoImages historically calculated from different blocks. No extrapolation far from GCPs in the limits of images is done anymore. Using the global block as a reference will allow new images from other sources to be easily located on this reference. [Termes IGN] Référence-3DRésumé : (auteur) Onboard SPOT 5, the HRS instrument systematically collects 600 km × 120 km stereopairs around the Globe since 2002. From this time, SPOT5 stereoscopic imagery becomes one of main satellite data sources for accurate DTED level 2 DEM extraction. Spot Image and French National Cartographic Institute (IGN) decided in 2002 to build a worldwide accurate database called Reference3DTM using HRS data. Huge eorts have been made to standardize the process in order to oer aordable prices. Until 2008, the targeted accuracies were 16 mCE90 for horizontal accuracy, and 10 mLE90 for vertical accuracy. These accuracy requirements were achieved without any control points nor map support. The introduction of the paper briey reminds the most signicant assessments performed by major players within the geospatial community, and more specically the one by ImageONE Co., Ltd. (Tokyo) on two Reference3D geocells over the Northern coast of Japan, Hokkaido province. This work was published in 2008 during the last Beijing ISPRS congress. In 2009, it was decided to introduce reliable GCPs within the Reference3D production process, to increase the horizontal accuracy down to 6-10 mCE90. In addition, two new layers were added to the product, which provide the user with i) the horizontal accuracy for every single pixel of the Reference3D orthoimage and ii) the vertical accuracy for every single elevation value within the Reference3D DEM. The paper shows how the extensive use of ICESat data brings valuable information regarding the eective vertical accuracy, and how ICESat data allows to quantify the elevation accuracy of a dataset. In conclusion, we present the road map for the update of the whole Reference3D database, which currently spreads over more than 45 millions of sq. km. (being more than 4,200 1° by 1° geocells), already funded and started up to 2014, towards 80 Mkm2 of Reference3D products.
