[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Advances in remote sensing technologies are generating new perspectives concerning the role of and methods used for National Forestry Inventories (NFIs). The increase in computation capabilities over the last several decades and the development of new statistical techniques have allowed for the automation of forest resource map generation through image analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms. The availability of large-scale data and the high temporal resolution that satellite platforms provide mean that it is possible to obtain updated information about forest resources at the stand level, thus increasing the quality of the spatial information. However, photointerpretation of satellite and aerial images is still the most common way that remote sensing information is used for NFIs or forest management purposes. This study describes a methodology that automatically maps the main forest covers in Galicia (Eucalyptus spp., conifers and broadleaves) using Worldview-2 and the random forest classifier. Furthermore, the method also evaluates the separate mapping of the three most abundant Pinus tree species in Galicia (Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris). According to the results, Worldview-2 multispectral images allow for the efficient differentiation between the main forest classes that are present in Galicia with a very high degree of accuracy (91%) and ample spatial detail. Pinus species can also be efficiently differentiated (83%). [Termes IGN] variableRésumé : (Auteur) Assessing large scale plant productivity of coastal marshes is essential to understand the resilience of these systems to climate change. Two machine learning approaches, random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) regression were tested to estimate biomass of a common saltmarshes species, salt couch grass (Sporobolus virginicus). Reflectance and vegetation indices derived from 8 bands of Worldview-2 multispectral data were used for four experiments to develop the biomass model. These four experiments were, Experiment-1: 8 bands of Worldview-2 image, Experiment-2: Possible combination of all bands of Worldview-2 for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) type vegetation indices, Experiment-3: Combination of bands and vegetation indices, Experiment-4: Selected variables derived from experiment-3 using variable selection methods. The main objectives of this study are (i) to recommend an affordable low cost data source to predict biomass of a common saltmarshes species, (ii) to suggest a variable selection method suitable for multispectral data, (iii) to assess the performance of RF and SVM for the biomass prediction model. Cross-validation of parameter optimizations for SVM showed that optimized parameter of ɛ-SVR failed to provide a reliable prediction. Hence, ν-SVR was used for the SVM model. Among the different variable selection methods, recursive feature elimination (RFE) selected a minimum number of variables (only 4) with an RMSE of 0.211 (kg/m2). Experiment-4 (only selected bands) provided the best results for both of the machine learning regression methods, RF (R2= 0.72, RMSE= 0.166 kg/m2) and SVR (R2= 0.66, RMSE = 0.200 kg/m2) to predict biomass. When a 10-fold cross validation of the RF model was compared with a 10-fold cross validation of SVR, a significant difference (p = Numéro de notice : A2021-367 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE/INFORMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/10106049.2019.1624988 Date de publication en ligne : 11/06/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/10106049.2019.1624988 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97729

[Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this research is to assess some stand parameters such as stand volume (SV), basal area (BA), number of trees (NT) and aboveground biomass (AGB) of pure Crimean pine forest stands in Turkey by using ground measurements and remote sensing techniques. For this purpose, 86 sample plots were collected from pure Crimean pine stands of Yenice Forest Management Planning Unit in Ilgaz Forest Management Enterprise, Turkey. The stand parameters of each sample area were estimated using the data obtained from the sample plots. Subsequently, we calculated the values of contrast (CON), correlation (COR), dissimilarity (DIS), entropy (ENT), homogeneity (HOM), mean (M), second moment (SM) and variance (VAR) from WorldView-2 imagery using a grey-level co-occurrence matrix method. Eight textural features and twelve different window sizes ranging from 3 × 3 to 25 × 25 were generated from blue, green, red and near-infrared bands of the WorldView-2 satellite image. For predicting the relationships between WorldView-2 textural features and stand parameters of each sample plot, regression models were developed by using multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis. Additionally, artificial neural networks (ANNs) based on the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and the radial basis function (RBF) architectures were trained by comparing various numbers of neurons and activation functions in their network types. The results showed that the MLR models had low the coefficient of determination (R2) values (0.32 for SV, 0.35 for BA, 0.33 for NT and 0.34 for AGB), and the most of the ANNs models (MLP and RBF) were better than the regression models for estimating stand parameters. The ANNs model containing MLP and RBF for SV (R2 = 0.40; R2 = 0.56), for BA (R2 = 0.34; R2 = 0.51), for NT (R2 = 0.34; R2 = 0.37) and for AGB (R2 = 0.34, R2 = 0.57) were found the best results, respectively. Our results revealed that the ANNs models developed with WorldView-2 satellite image were beneficial to estimate stand parameters better than the MLR model in pure Crimean pine stands. [Termes IGN] pollution atmosphériqueMots-clés libres : briqueterie Résumé : (auteur) Improving compliance with environmental regulations is critical for promoting clean environments and healthy populations. In South Asia, brick manufacturing is a major source of pollution but is dominated by small-scale, informal producers who are difficult to monitor and regulate—a common challenge in low-income settings. We demonstrate a low-cost, scalable approach for locating brick kilns in high-resolution satellite imagery from Bangladesh. Our approach identifies kilns with 94.2% accuracy and 88.7% precision and extracts the precise GPS coordinates of every brick kiln across Bangladesh. Using these estimates, we show that at least 12% of the population of Bangladesh (>18 million people) live within 1 km of a kiln and that 77% and 9% of kilns are (illegally) within 1 km of schools and health facilities, respectively. Finally, we show how kilns contribute up to 20.4 μg/m3 of PM2.5 (particulate matter of a diameter less than 2.5 μm) in Dhaka when the wind blows from an unfavorable direction. We document inaccuracies and potential bias with respect to local regulations in the government data. Our approach demonstrates how machine learning and Earth observation can be combined to better understand the extent and implications of regulatory compliance in informal industry.
