[Termes IGN] plante halophileRésumé : (Auteur) The Westerschelde estuary is the only major uncontrolled estuary in the south of The Netherlands. More than 15000 ships per year use it to access the Belgian port of Antwerp. A major dredging operation along the Westerschelde in the late 1990s has changed the tidal regime and increased tidal inundation of the salt marshes at high tide. Airborne remote sensing (CASI) has been acquired in 1998 and 2000 for three salt marsh sites in the Westerschelde estuary. An additional dataset exists for one site for 1993. The CASI data have been classified into maps of salt marsh vegetation. These provide an input for GIS-based modelling of sediment erosion/accretion. Maps of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values allow change detection: successional change of salt marsh vegetation is clearly demonstrated. The 1993, 1998 and 2000 data show a successional trend between 1993 and 1998 that is, in part, reversing between 1998 and 2000. Data also showed significant erosion of the salt marsh edge. Data are being used to extrapolate field measurements and help produce sediment budgets for the individual salt marshes. [Termes IGN] Victoria (Australie)Résumé : (Auteur) The supposition that, for most practical purposes, a single, generic, widely applicable relation exists between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and grassland vegetation moisture content is tested. An experiment is described in which the vegetation moisture content at three Victorian grassland sites of varying composition is measured over the course of a complete curing episode. For each site, corresponding satellite radiation measurements are used to extract surface reflectances corrected for atmospheric and view-angle effects, and NDVI values based on these. On relating NDVI so obtained to the field measurements of vegetation moisture expressed in terms of a parameter commonly employed in assessing grassland fire risk, namely Fuel Moisture Content (FMC), separate relations for each site are clearly identified. When the relation appropriate to each site is used to derive FMC for that site, accurate estimates are obtained. Accuracy decreases markedly if the relation appropriate to one site is used to derive estimates of FMC at the other sites. When FMC values are transformed to another commonly employed parameter of grassland vegetation moisture content, namely Grassland Curing Index (GCI), the loss of accuracy becomes much greater. More accurate estimates of GCI are obtained using a direct relation between NDVI and GCI. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) The interannual variation of global vegetation net primary production (NPP), which is crucial to understanding the role of terrestrial biosphere in the global carbon cycle, is still poorly understood. Currently, remote sensing emerges as a useful tool for estimating NPP through monitoring global vegetation distribution and growth. The objective of this study was to utilize the multi-year monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset of 1987-1997 from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) to investigate the interannual variation in productivity of global vegetation due to climate variation, human activities, and environmental events. A decision tree algorithm based on simple metrics (minimum, maximum, mean and amplitude) was employed to classify the global vegetation from NDVI data and obtain the annual vegetation growth areas. Then, annual NPP was computed using the annual vegetation growth areas and the predefined NPP coefficients given in a 1990 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCQ) report. The NPP exhibited a slightly increasing trend through the 11 years. However, interannual variations were observed to be mainly determined by variation in growth of tropical and temperate evergreen forests. These fluctuations were consistently correlated to El Niño/La Niña events. Although the interannual variation in primary productivity of global vegetation is expected to influence the atmospheric C02 concentration over the one-decade period, it is unlikely to have solely caused the anomalously low growth in 1992-1993. The adopted methodology enabled close examination of variability in vegetation growth at the biome scale as well as at global scale. [Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) Estimates of carbon uptake at the continental scale become urgently needed as the role of countries as net sinks or sources of carbon gains political and economic importance. Despite uncertainties related to radiation use efficiency, the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted by the canopy is a reliable estimator of primary production. Theoretical and empirical data support the relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer sensor on National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration satellites and the fraction of PAR intercepted by green canopies. It is shown, for the period 1981-2000, that there is an overall increase in the radiation intercepted by the canopy over South America by 1.3%, with rainforests making the largest absolute contribution (45%), followed by savannas (23%). Under conditions of minimal agricultural use, disturbance and anthropogenic N deposition, humid temperate forests showed the highest proportional increase in NDVI during the last two decades (4.9%). Deserts showed a net reduction in NDVI relative to the 1981-1985 average (-4.4%). The expansion of agriculture over the last two decades was associated with NDVI reductions over subtropical forests. NDVI trends in South American region highlight a biome-dependent imprint of major global change noticeable in only two decades. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) It is important to estimate land surface evapotranspiration (ET) for water resources evaluation, drought monitoring and crop production simulation. In this paper, a relationship between annual ET, integrated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Relative Moisture Index (RMI) was established. Based on this relationship, the spatial distribution and dynamic change of annual ET were estimated for the Yellow River Basin, China from 1982 to 2000. Our analyses involved the use of integrated NDVI data, monthly mean air temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that the integrated AVHRR NDVI can be used to effectively estimate annual ET in the Yellow River Basin, with an accuracy over 90% for the whole basin.
