[Termes IGN] PinophytaRésumé : (Auteur) Compared with traditional remote sensing, multiangular observation provides 3-D structural information of a forest through different directional observations. The MGeoSAIL model, suitable for multiangular observations, was developed based on the single-angle model GeoSAIL. The MGeoSAIL model combines the geometric-optic model with the radiation transfer model and has the advantages of both models. Thus, it is more accurate and feasible. The geometric-optic model calculates the amount of shadowed and illuminated components within a forest scene, while the radiation transfer model [Scattering by Arbitrarily Inclined Leaves (SAIL)] calculates the reflectance and transmittance of tree crowns. The uniform index is introduced to characterize the relationship quantitatively between tree distribution pattern and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The simulation results show that the MGeoSAIL model could simulate the “hot” spot in red and near-infrared bands, as well as the “bowl” shape in the near-infrared band. The relationship between the uniform index and BRDF is negatively exponential. Finally, the look-up table was calculated using the MGeoSAIL model, and leaf area index (LAI) was inversed from compact high-resolution imaging spectrometry data. The results compared well with the measured LAI in Changbai Mountain area, China. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper demonstrates the potential of dual polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in the estimation of the leaf area index (LAI) of boreal forests. The SAR data do not suffer from the low sun elevation and frequent cloud cover, which often complicate the use of optical wavelengths for LAI retrieval in the area. The analysis was based on a large number of environmental satellite (ENVISAT) advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) alternating polarization vertical polarization (VV)/horizontal polarization (HH) single-look-complex images covering several test sites, boreal and subarctic, during summers 2003-2006. The swath range from IS1 to IS7 was studied. In all test sites, a linear regression with the VV/HH backscattering ratio as the independent variable could typically be used for the estimation of LAI. All swaths could be used for the estimation, but larger incidence angles generally performed better. The best results were obtained for swath IS6. The swaths could be used also together, but better results were obtained using the diverse swaths individually. The LAI estimation error decreased essentially exponentially with the number of pixels averaged to give one backscattering value. The LAI estimation accuracy for a set of average quality ASAR images of swath IS6 reached 0.1 when the averaging number of pixels was 33 150, which would correspond to an area of about 2.2 km2 for images with no overlap. The spatial LAI estimation error decreased with the number of images covering the same area. [Termes IGN] Wisconsin (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) We employed the discrete wavelet transform to reflectance spectra obtained from hyperspectral data to improve estimation of LAi in temperate forests. We estimated LAl for 32 plots across a range afforest types in Wisconsin using hemispherical photography. Plot spectra were extracted from AVIRIS data and transformed into wavelet features using the Haar wavelet. Separately, subsets of spectral bands and the Haar features selected by a genetic algorithm were used as independent variables in linear regressions. Models using wavelet coefficients explained the most variance for both broadleaf plots (R2 = 0.90 for wavelet features versus R2 = 0.80 for spectral bands) and all plots independent afforest type (R2 = 0.79 for wavelet features vs. R2 = 0.58 for spectral bands). The forest-type specific models were better than the models using all plots combined. Overall, wavelet features appear superior to band reflectances alone for estimating temperate forest LAI using hyperspectral data. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a multiannual comparison at regional scale of currently available 1-km global leaf area index (LAI) products with crop-specific green area index (GAI) retrieved from 250-m spatial resolution imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The crop-specific GAI product benefits from the following extra processing steps: 1) spatial filtering of time series based on pixel purity; 2) transforming the time scale to thermal time; and 3) fitting a canopy structural dynamic model to smooth out the signal. In order to perform a rigorous comparison, these steps were also applied to the 1-km LAI products, namely, MODIS LAI (MCD15) and LAI produced in the CYCLOPES (Carbon cYcle and Change in Land Observational Products from an Ensemble of Satellites) project. A simple indicator was also designed to quantify the increase in temporal smoothness that can thus be obtained. The results confirm that, for winter wheat, the 250-m GAI product provides a more realistic description of the time course of the biophysical variable in terms of reaching higher values, grasping the variability, and providing smoother time series. However, the use of thermal time and pixel purity also improves the temporal consistency and coherence of the 1-km products. Overall, the results of this study suggest that these techniques could be valuable in harmonizing remote sensing data coming from different sources with varying spatial and temporal resolution for enhanced vegetation monitoring. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS)-based leaf area index (LAI) retrieval is an appealing concept, due to the ability to capture structural information of canopies as 3D point cloud data (PCD). TLS-based LAI estimation methods promise a nondestructive tool for spatially explicit calibration of LAI estimated by aerial or satellite remote sensing techniques. These methods also overcome the sky condition restrictions of on-ground optical instruments such as hemispherical photography frequently used for LAI estimation. This paper presents a new method for estimating the effective LAI (LAIe) directly from PCD generated by TLS in heterogeneous forests. We converted the 3-D PCD into 2-D raster images, similar to hemispherical photographs, using two geometrical projection techniques in order to estimate gap fraction and LAIe using a linear least squares method. Our results indicated that the TLS-based algorithm was able to capture the variability in LAIe of forest stands with a range of densities.
