In many applications, like modeling the equatorial anomaly, regional processes are of special interest. To study regional phenomena multi-dimensional mathematical tools may be applied. In this report a regional multi-dimensional representation based on quadratic B-splines is derived and applied to spatio-temporal data sets.
At first the theory of a multiscale analysis is introduced, i.e. the decomposition of signals into a smoother version arid a number of detail signals for the 1-dimensional case. To develop a multiscale analysis we introduce B-splines as scaling functions. The corresponding base functions, i.e. the B-spline wavelets can be computed via the so-called two-scale relations from the scaling functions. Series coefficients of the B-spline expansion can be computed by evaluating inner products using the dual base functions or by applying parameter estimation procedures. To generalize a 1-dimensional B-spline representation to the multi-dimensional case tensor product techniques are used. A data compression algorithm is derived from the multiscale analysis, i.e. we gain a tool to handle huge digital data sets.
In our applications we decompose ionospheric functions, e.g. the electron density or the vertical total electron content, into a reference part and an unknown correction term. We apply our approach regionally to the correction term, i.e. we expand it in a multi-dimensional series expansion in terms of B-splines. Since our observations are located rather unbalanced with respect to space and time finer structures are modelable only in regions with a sufficient number of observation sites. The multiscale analysis derived from the wavelet analysis allows monitoring the ionospheric signals at different resolution levels.

Note de contenu : I Introduction

[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper studies the straight skeleton of polyhedra in three dimensions. We first address voxel-based polyhedra (polycubes), formed as the union of a collection of cubical (axis-aligned) voxels. We analyze the ways in which the skeleton may intersect each voxel of the polyhedron, and show that the skeleton may be constructed by a simple voxel-sweeping algorithm taking constant time per voxel. In addition, we describe a more complex algorithm for straight skeletons of voxel-based polyhedra, which takes time proportional to the area of the surfaces of the straight skeleton rather than the volume of the polyhedron. We also consider more general polyhedra with axis parallel edges and faces, and show that any n-vertex polyhedron of this type has a straight skeleton with O(n2) features. We provide algorithms for constructing the straight skeleton, with running time O(min(n2 logn;k logO(1) n)) where k is the output complexity. Next, we discuss the straight skeleton of a general non convex polyhedron. We show that it has an ambiguity issue, and suggest a consistent method to resolve it. We prove that the straight skeleton of a general polyhedron has a superquadratic complexity in the worst case. Finally, we report on an implementation of a simple algorithm for the general case. It is based on a digital camera, and various photogrammetric and computer vision freeware completed by home-made software developments. The paper presents the equipment used for the acquisition of the images, and the processing software for the various steps. This software is mainly based on algorithms originating from computer vision community, and from more classical photogrammetry. Some intermediate results are presented, the final output of the present work being a very dense cloud of points describing the geometry of the surface of the shard, that may be post processed by many off-the-shelf drawing commercial software, depending on the needs of the archaeologists.
