[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Among the systems that aim to help users to perform map reading tasks, augmented reality (AR) is one of the most promising. However, the impact of this new technology in terms of acceptance, motivation and improvement of the learning process has still not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to assess the contribution of an AR system for map reading and for improving users’ understanding of geographic data. Landscape and census data from New Zealand were used to evaluate the performance of an AR system in an experiment involving 60 participants. Differences in the participants’ backgrounds were reflected in the way they completed the task for both printed maps and the AR system and 90% of the participants preferred to work with the AR system rather than with traditional printed maps. Users that had previous experience of the geographical dataset provided performed the task better using only the printed maps, while those without that experience performed better with the AR system. [Termes IGN] Web View ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Street view (panoramic view) services have begun to shift from PC platforms to mobile smart devices. Considering the capabilities of smart terminal devices, a 360° spherical level of detail (LoD) model for mobile street view services that renders panoramic images on the inner surface of a sphere via LoD is proposed in this article. Panoramic images are segmented into tiles and organized in a pyramid tile structure for LoD rendering to improve the rendering efficiency of the proposed model. A projection model between panoramic images and the spherical surface is presented to map the panoramic tiles on the spherical graticule. A street view-rendering algorithm of panoramic images is proposed with the rendering function of OpenGL for Embedded Systems (OpenGL ES). A street view service app running on Android, based on the proposed approach, is implemented to assess two aspects of the panoramic view model, namely visualization effect and efficiency. Experiment results reveal that the 360° spherical LoD model of the panoramic image can display 3D street view scenes better than the cubic panoramic view model. The proposed model also has an excellent 3D visualization effect and high-efficiency rendering ability for mobile street view services. Therefore, it is applicable in large-scale mobile street view services both online and offline and in augmented reality navigation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Digital three-dimensional (3D) cartography environments provide new ways of landscape visualization and topographic interpretation: digital terrain modeling (DTM) is added to the traditional cartographic technique, where relief interpretation skill is needed to interpret 3D topographic information from 2D representations. The emergence of augmented reality (AR) technology for DTM representation offers a new way to develop map-reading skills. It is in the representation of the landforms (hills, dunes, depths, valleys, mountains, shapes, slopes, and elevations) where the AR allows a new way to interact with the landscape representation. Once AR technology is combined with tablet computers, the manipulation of DTM can be done by finger gestures. This paper analyzes the potential of AR as an innovative teaching tool to improve relief interpretation skill based on the results of a workshop with 73 engineering students from La Laguna University, Spain. Participants performed exercises with 2D traditional techniques of relief representation and with AR. To compare the effect with and without AR, another group of 22 students conducted the workshop with only 2D relief representations. The gain was significantly better with the AR group; students who did not use AR had also a significantly better result, but their scores were still lower.
