[Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the development of a GIS/GPS-based emergency response system connecting the dispatch centre and emergency response vehicles using a cellular network. The system has general geographic information system functions and specific functions for managing emergency sites, vehicles, and routing paths. The graphical user interface has two versions: a dispatch version and a vehicle version. The simple and flexible graphical user interfaces allow for easy customization to meet the needs of different application scenarios. Supported by dispatch rules, the dispatch version allows for both automated dispatch and manual dispatch. Coupled with GPS receiving devices, the vehicle version provides near real-time transmission of vehicle locations to the dispatch centre. Some smart features are also developed to enable or disable data transmission based on the vehicle status, and to display relevant information (such as floor-plans, hydrants, etc.) about the emergency site. [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Many time-critical applications such as emergency response, location-based services, and real time traffic management need instant access to diverse data to make quick decisions and take instantaneous actions. However, two issues block time-critical applications to quickly acquire and integrate spatial data over the web: (1) the heterogeneity of existing GIS systems, and (2) the filelevel data sharing systems over the web. This research examines current open standards, protocols, and technologies capable of solving the two issues for real-time spatial data sharing over the web. Focusing on investigating the role of Web Feature Services (WFS) and Web Map Services (WMS), this research has developed a solution for real-time geospatial data sharing at the feature level over the web. A prototype has been implemented to query, extract, create, delete, update, and map geographic features stored in web-accessible OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) simple feature datastores for transportation emergency applications. The prototype results show that the OGC WFS and WMS play important roles in real-time geospatial data sharing and exchange from heterogeneous sources at the feature level for time-critical applications. The WFS and WMS eliminate time-consuming data translation and facilitate re-use of existing geospatial data over the web. Several issues related to the solution are also discussed in the paper. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The increased use of the Web and the Mobile Internet as a platform for geospatial applications necessitates development of improved interoperability between. Computing systems and underscores the need to apply standardized network technologies in processes dealing with spatial data. The generalization approach applicable in network-based spatial data services may be based on different technologies, compared with traditional cartographic generalization. Here, the use of Extensible Markup Language (XML) techniques in data transformations, with special emphasis on cartographic generalization, is presented. The research presented in the paper is focused on the Extensible Style-sheet Language Transformation (XSLT) process as a means to generalize XML-encoded spatial data in real time. The prototype system for real-time generalization developed at the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI) applies Geography Markup Language (GML) as spatial data encoding and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) images for map visualization. The data-access interface conforms with the Open GIS Consortium's (OGC) Web Feature Service specification. The implemented generalization operators include selection, building simplification and aggregation, and were processed during the request response dialogue in the network. The generalization process was tested on topographic datasets and results visualized on the Web and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Although XML-based computing processes are generally understood to yield poor performance ratings, the work shows that intelligent XSLT generalization processes can be introduced without degrading the performance of a mobile map service.
