[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Cartographers' main objective in map design is to create in the mind of a map reader (i.e. user) an abstraction of the real world appropriate to the map's purpose. The final result depends, not only on the cartographers', but also users' skills and ways to perceive, as well as on the map usage situation. Interruptions during map reading process of mobile maps occur, when the conceptual models of the cartographer and the user do not match, e.g. if the user does not understand the symbols, or the overall layout of the mobile map. This can be frustrating from the users' point of view. It is thought here, that by bringing context awareness into the maps on mobile devices, interruptions in map reading process could be decreased, by providing each user with symbols that are adapted to the usage situation and user preferences in real-time. In this paper some ideas, of how to implement context awareness into mobile maps by personalisation, are presented. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) This document describes the Po-tree, a new indexing structure for spatiotemporal databases with soft real time constraints. This is crucial for risk management, particularly for the monitoring of volcanic risk. For example, the Popocatepetl, a Mexican volcano, is closely monitored through an network of spatially referenced sensors. They all send back their measurements to a central spatiotemporal database. The Po-tree will therefore be able to index huge quantities of data in a restricted amount of time. It will also be able to favor the newer data, which are queried more frequently. While most structures tend to favor the temporal aspect over the spatial, or tend to consider time as another spatial dimension, the Po-tree offers an alternative. It does so by combining two different structures, for spatial and temporal dimensions respectively, stressing the spatial aspect, and linking every source of information to a new temporal sub-tree. While mobility is not yet supported, experimentation and comparisons have shown interesting potential in the structure. [Termes IGN] trajectographie (positionnement)Résumé : (Auteur) When utilizing knowledge of the spacecraft trajectory for near realtime geocoding of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, the main problem is that predicted satellite orbits have to be used, which may be in error by several kilometres. As part of the development of a Dutch autonomous mobile ground station to receive and process satellite SAR data, a method has been developed that removes the effects of orbit errors from the computed azimuth and slantrange coordinates, whilst maintaining the realtime character. Results show that predicted orbits can be used to geocode SAR imagery in near real time with the same accuracy as when using precise orbits, i.e. 30-40 m. [Termes IGN] transmission de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Project FiRE (First Response Experiment), a disaster management technology demonstration, was performed in 2001. The experiment demonstrated the use of a thermal multispectral scanning imager, integrated on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a satellite uplink/downlink image data telemetry system, and nearrealtime georectification of the resultant imagery for data distribution via the Internet to disaster managers. The FiRE demonstration provided geocorrected image data over a controlled burn to a fire management community in nearrealtime by means of the melding of new technologies. The use of the UAV demonstrated remotely piloted flight (thereby reducing the potential for loss of human life during hazardous missions), and the ability to "linger and stare " over the fire for extended periods of time (beyond the capabilities of humanpilot endurance). Improvements in a high temperature calibrated thermal imaging scanner allowed "remote" operations from a UAV and provided realtime accurate fire information collection over a controlled burn. Improved bitrate capacity telemetry capabilities increased the amount, structure, and information content of the image data relayed to the ground. The integration of precision navigation instrumentation allowed improved accuracies in georectification of the resultant imagery, easing data ingestion and overlay in a GIS framework. We present a discussion of the feasibility of utilizing new platforms, improved sensor configurations, improved telemetry, and new geocorrection software to facilitate wildfire management and mitigation strategies.
