[Termes IGN] gravimétrie spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The European Space Agency’s Gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer mission (GOCE) was launched on 17 March 2009. As the first of the Earth Explorer family of satellites within the Agency’s Living Planet Programme, it is aiming at a better understanding of the Earth system. The mission objective of GOCE is the determination of the Earth’s gravity field and geoid with high accuracy and maximum spatial resolution. The geoid, combined with the de facto mean ocean surface derived from twenty-odd years of satellite radar altimetry, yields the global dynamic ocean topography. It serves ocean circulation and ocean transport studies and sea level research. GOCE geoid heights allow the conversion of global positioning system (GPS) heights to high precision heights above sea level. Gravity anomalies and also gravity gradients from GOCE are used for gravity-to-density inversion and in particular for studies of the Earth’s lithosphere and upper mantle. GOCE is the first-ever satellite to carry a gravitational gradiometer, and in order to achieve its challenging mission objectives the satellite embarks a number of world-first technologies. In essence the spacecraft together with its sensors can be regarded as a spaceborne gravimeter. In this work, we describe the mission and the way it is operated and exploited in order to make available the best-possible measurements of the Earth gravity field. The main lessons learned from the first 19 months in orbit are also provided, in as far as they affect the quality of the science data products and therefore are of specific interest for GOCE data users. [Termes IGN] métierRésumé : (Auteur) The role of the surveyor has changed significantly over time, and will continue to do so. In this article, Trimble's Bryn Fosburgh has a critical look at the changing role of the surveyor. Technological changes have defined the past, present and future of the surveying industry and profession. It is important not to forget the core survey knowledge, but also to change and adopt new skills and areas of practice. [Termes IGN] récepteur monofréquenceRésumé : (Editeur) What do a GPS receiver, a policeman’s speed gun, a weather radar, and some medical diagnostic equipment have in common? Give up? They all make use of the Doppler effect. First proposed in 1842 by the Austrian mathematician and physicist, Christian Doppler, it is the change in the perceived frequency of a wave when the transmitter and the receiver are in relative motion. Doppler introduced the concept in an attempt to explain the shift in the color of light from certain binary stars. Three years later, the effect was tested for sound waves by the Dutch scientist Christophorus Buys Ballot. [...] The beginning of the space age heralded a new application of the Doppler effect. By measuring the shift in the received frequency of the radio beacon signals transmitted by Sputnik 1 from a known location, scientists were able to determine the orbit of the satellite. And shortly thereafter, they determined that if the orbit of a satellite was known, then the position of a receiver could be determined from the shift. That realization led to the development of the United States Navy Navigation Satellite System, commonly known as Transit, with the first satellite being launched in 1961. Initially classified, the system was made available to civilians in 1967 and was widely used for navigation and precise positioning until it was shut down in 1996. The Soviet Union developed a similar system called Tsikada and a special military version called Parus. These systems are also assumed to be no longer in use — at least for navigation. GPS and other global navigation satellite systems use the Doppler shift of the received carrier frequencies to determine the velocity of a moving receiver. Doppler-derived velocity is far more accurate than that obtained by simply differencing two position estimates. But GPS Doppler measurements can be used in other ways, too. In this month’s column, we look at how Doppler measurements can be used to smooth noisy code-based pseudoranges to improve the precision of autonomous positioning as well as to improve the availability of single-frequency real-time kinematic positioning, especially in urban environments. [Termes IGN] trajet multipleRésumé : (Auteur) An emerging requirement for processing GNSS signals indoor, where signals were very weak and subject to spatial fading, has typically led receivers designers to use of longer coherent integration intervals that provide the additional processing gain required for the detection and processing of such weak signals. However, the physical motion of the handset imposed by the user limits the effectiveness of longer coherent integration intervals due to the spatial decorrelation of the multipath-faded GNSS signal. Research at the University of Calgary suggests factors that receivers designers might consider to address this problem.
