[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrain undulations affect the geometric and radiometric quality of synthetic aperture radar images. The correction of these effects becomes indispensable when quantitative image analysis is performed with respect to the derivation of geo- and biophysical parameters. The paper presents a rigorous approach for geometric and radiometric correction of SAR images. Using a digital elevation model, the imaging geometry is reconstructed and is used to perform geometric and radiometric correction of terrain induced distortions. The importance of a stringent radiometric correction based on the integration of the image brightness is emphasized. The approach guarantees that the energy contained in the image data is preserved throughout the geocoding process. The resulting backscattering images are fully terrain corrected and can be used for further quantitative investigations and may also improve qualitative studies as e.g. land cover classifications. The technique is applicable for different sensor types and image products, including already geocoded SAR images. The effect of different resolutions of digital elevation models used for the correction of the backscattering coefficient is investigated. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Estimation of aerosol loadings is of great importance to the studies on global climate changes. The current Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol estimation algorithm over land is based on the “dark-object” approach, which works only over densely vegetated (“dark”) surfaces. In this study, we develop a new aerosol estimation algorithm that uses the temporal signatures from a sequence of MODIS imagery over land surfaces, particularly “bright” surfaces. The estimated aerosol optical depth is validated by Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements. Case studies indicate that this algorithm can retrieve aerosol optical depths reasonably well from the winter MODIS imagery at seven sites: four sites in the greater Washington, DC area, USA; Beijing City, China; Banizoumbou, Niger, Africa; and Bratts Lake, Canada. The MODIS aerosol estimation algorithm over land (MOD04), however, does not perform well over these non-vegetated surfaces. This new algorithm has the potential to be used for other satellite images that have similar temporal resolutions. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) An optimal deconvolution (ODC) technique has been developed to estimate microwave brightness temperatures of agricultural fields using microwave radiometer observations. The technique is applied to airborne measurements taken by the Passive and Active L and S band (PALS) sensor in Iowa during Soil Moisture Experiments in 2002 (SMEX02). Agricultural fields in the study area were predominantly soybeans and corn. The brightness temperatures of corn and soybeans were observed to be significantly different because of large differences in vegetation biomass. PALS observations have significant over-sampling; observations were made about 100 m apart and the sensor footprint extends to about 400 m. Conventionally, observations of this type are averaged to produce smooth spatial data fields of brightness temperatures. However, the conventional approach is in contrast to reality in which the brightness temperatures are in fact strongly dependent on land cover, which is characterized by sharp boundaries. In this study, we mathematically deconvolve the observations into brightness temperature at the field scale (500-800 m) using the sensor antenna response function. The result is more accurate spatial representation of field-scale brightness temperatures, which may in turn lead to more accurate soil moisture retrieval. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Cloud detection is the first step in studying the role of polar clouds in the global climate system with satellite data. In this paper, the cloud detection algorithm for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) is evaluated with model simulations and satellite data collocated with radar/lidar observations at three Arctic and Antarctic stations. Results show that the current MODIS cloud mask algorithm performs well in polar regions during the day but does not detect more than 40% of the cloud cover over the validation sights at night. Two new cloud tests utilizing the 7.2 um water vapor and 14.2 um carbon dioxide bands, one new clear-sky test using the 7.2 um band, and changes to the thresholds of several other tests are described. With the new cloud detection procedure, the misidentification of cloud as clear decreases from 44.2% to 16.3% at the two Arctic stations, and from 19.8% to 2.7% at the Antarctic station.
