[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Shadows in remotely sensed imagery occur when objects totally or partially occlude direct light from a source of illumination, generating great difficulty in land cover interpretation and classification because of the loss of spectral information of shaded pixels. In a mountainous environment with rough terrain, shadows are especially pronounced due to the differentiation of direct illumination between sunny and shady slopes. Topographic correction methods, which are widely used to adjust for differences in solar incidence angles, can partly alleviate the impacts of shadows. However, there are two limitations: one is that the contemporary topographic corrections have little effect on areas that have very low incidence angles and areas that are completely without direct solar illumination (cast shadow); another is that their effectiveness is restricted by the data quality and completeness, spatial resolution, and elevation accuracy of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data, which is not currently available in all parts of the world. Thus, noise and errors may be introduced in topographic correction during resampling and geometric registration of the target image. This paper proposes a new approach to restore the radiometric information of mountainous cast shadows using a spectral processing technique called “continuum removal” (CR) without the aid of DEM. The CR-based approach makes full use of the spectral information derived from both the shaded pixels and their neighboring nonshaded pixels of the same land cover type. Several Landsat TM images were used to assess the performance of the proposed method. Results indicated that the proposed method can effectively restore the spectral values of shaded pixels more accurately than the ATCOR_3 correction method, especially for very low incidence angle areas and cast shadows. By comparing data values of shaded pixels with nonshaded pixels (pure reference pixels) of their same class, images processed by the proposed method had the lowest average root mean square error (RMSE) between them in visible, NIR and SWIR bands, followed by the ATCOR_3 correction method and the original image. In addition, the proposed method achieved the best classification accuracy, higher than those from the original test image and the ATCOR_3 corrected image generated using 90 m or 30 m spatial resolution DEM. Therefore, the Continuum Removal method is a better alternative for restoring objects obscured by mountainous shadow when adequate DEM data are unavailable and the quality of DEM cannot satisfy the requirements of topographic correction algorithms. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Edges and corners are two major image features in the modelling of man-made objects; an edge provides strong geometric orientation and corners possess good localisation. Feature detection is the basis of image processing for numerous applications such as image registration and object modelling. Completeness and localisation are the two major considerations for these applications; however, illumination, reflectance and shadows may interfere with image grey values to produce various gradients along an edge. Thus, threshold selection is an important step in obtaining suitable features in target-dependent methods as improper selection might cause information loss and broken edges. Instead of threshold selection, this study therefore proposes a feature extraction method using topological gradient connection (TGC) analysis involving three steps: grey value refinement, gradient computation and topological connection analysis. The first step uses a Gaussian filter to smooth the grey value image. The second step computes directional gradients to identify ridge pixels and collect feature candidates. The third step analyses adjacent candidates based on the criterion of topological connection. This three-step tracing procedure combines these connected candidates into a single object. The proposed scheme employs different images derived from various sensors and compares them with the Canny operator (using manually selected thresholds) and manually plotted corners for detection ability assessment. Experimental results indicate that the automatic results are more complete for subtle feature lines than the Canny edges. In addition, the proposed method provides higher flexibility in selecting suitable feature layers for different applications. [Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (Auteur) Quantifying the above ground biomass of tropical forests is critical for understanding the dynamics of carbon fluxes between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, as well as monitoring ecosystem responses to environmental change. Remote sensing remains an attractive tool for estimating tropical forest biomass but relationships and methods used at one site have not always proved applicable to other locations. This lack of a widely applicable general relationship limits the operational use of remote sensing as a method for biomass estimation, particularly in high biomass ecosystems. Here, multispectral Landsat TM and JERS-1 SAR data were used together to estimate tropical forest biomass at three separate geographical locations: Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand. Texture measures were derived from the JERS-1 SAR data using both wavelet analysis and Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix methods, and coupled with multispectral data to provide inputs to artificial neural networks that were trained under four different training scenarios and validated using biomass measured from 144 field plots. When trained and tested with data collected from the same location, the addition of SAR texture to multispectral data showed strong correlations with above ground biomass (r = 0.79, 0.79 and 0.84 for Thailand, Malaysia and Brazil respectively). Also, when networks were trained and tested with data from all three sites, the strength of correlation (r = 0.55) was stronger than previously reported results from the same sites that used multispectral data only. Uncertainty in estimating AGB from different allometric equations was also tested but found to have little effect on the strength of the relationships observed. The results suggest that the inclusion of SAR texture with multispectral data can go someway towards providing relationships that are transferable across time and space, but that further work is required if satellite remote sensing is to provide robust and reliable methodologies for initiatives such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).
