[Termes IGN] reconnaissance d'objetsRésumé : (Auteur) Our goal is to detect changes in an aerial scene by comparing grey scale stereopairs taken several years apart in order to update a geographic database. A set of image locations that have a high likelihood to contain changes will be submitted to a human operator who will either reject the proposed change or validate it and update the database accordingly. We are mainly interested in changes in buildings. To isolate new construction and buildings, which disappear, we provide an algorithm that works in two steps. First, during a focusing phase, we eliminate a large part of the scene without losing any actual changes by comparing a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the two dates. Second, we classify the resulting regions of interest (ROl) based on four images-stereopairs of the area at the two dates. To decide whether or not the R01 contains a change, we classify each of the four images as "building" or "no-building". This classifier is a combination of several decision trees induced from training data. Each node of each decision tree is identified with a graph of features which is more likely to occur on buildings than background. Finally, the classification results at the two different dates are compared. The final set of locations submitted to an operator omits less than 10% of the true changes. The false positive rate represents less than 5% of the scene surface. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The long-time historical evolution and recent rapid development of' BeiJing, China, present before us a unique urban structure. A 10-metre spatial resolution SPOT panchromatic image of Beijing has been studied to capture the spatial patterns of the city. Supervised image classifications were performed Using statistical and structural texture features produced from the image. Textural features, including eight texture features from the Grey-Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GI-CM) method ; a computationally efficient texture feature, the Number of Different Grey-levels (NDG), and a structural texture feature, Edge Density (ED), were evaluated. It was found that generally single texture features performed poorly. Classification accuracy increased with increasing number of texture features until three or four texture features were combined. The more texture features in the combination, the smaller difference between different combinations. The results also show that a lower number of texture features were needed for more homogeneous areas. NDG and ED combined with GLCM texture features produced similar results as the same number of GLCM texture features. Two classification schemes were adopted, stratified classification and non-stratified classification. The best stratified classification result was better than the best non-stratified classification result. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a frequency-based contextual classifier (FBC) for landuse classification with a panchromatic Ikonos image. To capture the spatial arrangement of image graylevel values and use such information in image classification, we applied texture spectrum (TS) directly in the FBC. The effects of several data preprocessing and reduction methods on the performance of the FBC are also evaluated. The methods include four graylevel reduction (GLR) techniques and several modifications to the TS technique. The purpose of data reduction is to improve the classification efficiency of the FBC. The GLR schemes were minmax linear compression (LC), gray level binning (BN), histogram equalization (HE), and piecewise nonlinear compression (PC). Instead of using the texture measures derived from the texture spectrum, we directly applied texture spectra of various sizes in the classification. We modified the encoding algorithm in the TS and were able to reduce the number of texture units from its original 6561 to 256, 81, and 16, leading to as much as a 410 times computation efficiency. The original image and GLR images were subsequently classified with the FBC. We compared the classification accuracies and found that the GLR methods resulted in accuracies similar to that of the original image (within 0.03 kappa value). There was little difference in classification accuracy (within 0.03 kappa value) among the three modified TS methods, which were all outperformed by the original TS method. All TS methods performed considerably better than the use of the original image and the GLR methods. These are also compared against a benchmark approach : the GrayLevel Cooccurrence Matrix. The three methods and their implementation are briefly described. Three series of experiments have been prepared to test the performance of these methods in various classification contexts. These contexts are simulated by vaiying the number, type and visual likeness of the texture patches used in classification tests. More specifically, their ability to correctly classify, separate, and associate texture patches is assessed. Results suggest that the classification context has an important impact on performance rates of all methods. The variogram-based and the GrayTone Dependency Matrix methods were generally superior, each one in particular contexts. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) A new parameter, here termed openness, expressing the degree of dominance or enclosure of a location on an irregular surface, is developed to visualise topographic character. Openness is an angular measure of the relation between surface relief and horizontal distance. For angles less than 90', it is equivalent to the internal angle of a cone, its APEX at a DEM location, constrained by neighbouring elevations within a specified radial distance. Openness incorporates the terrain line-of-sight, or viewshed, concept and is calculated from multiple zenith and nadir angles-here along eight azimuths. Openness has two viewer perspectives. Positive values, expressing openness above the surface, are high for convex forms, whereas negative values describe this attribute below the surface and are high for concave forms. Openness values are mapped by gray-scale tones. The emphasis of terrain convexity and concavity in openness maps facilitates the interpretation of landforms on the Earth's surface and its seafloor, and on the planets, as well as features on any irregular surface-such as those generated by industrial procedures.
