[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric (D-InSAR) data of ground surface deformation are affected by several error sources associated with image acquisitions and data processing. In this paper, we study the use of D-InSAR for quantifying land subsidence due to groundwater extraction. We model the data as the sum of a trend, a zeromean stochastic process and white noise. A geostatistical approach combines D-InSAR subsidence data with in situ levelling measurements. The objective of this paper is to correct the errors contained in the D-InSAR measurements by using measurements as the ground data to improve their accuracy. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and original D-InSAR measurements are analysed at levelling points using variograms and predicted at unvisited points using kriging. The integrated measurements are obtained by subtracting the predicted errors from the original D-InSAR measurements. The proposed method is applied to data collected in the Tianjin (China) area where land subsidence occurs due to groundwater extraction. Results demonstrate the capability of the D-InSAR technique for detecting subsidence at the centimetre level, and of using a limited number of levelling points to improve the accuracy of D-InSAR deformation measurements provided the coherence of images used is high enough. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and D-InSAR measurements are quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE). RMSE for the original data was equal to 2.8, and 0.8 for the integrated data, whereas the mean error was equal to 2.1 and 0.0, respectively. [Termes IGN] ItalieRésumé : (Auteur) The capability of measuring small crustal deformation by means of differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry (DIFSAR) is investigated in this work. After outlining the mathematical background inherent to the principles of differential SAR interferometry and showing the potential and limits of theinformation content of spaceborne DIFSAR data, the analysis of the impact of this technique is carried out on some interferometric couples gathered in 1996 by the ERS-1/ERS-2 (European Remote Sensing Satellite) tandem mission. The imaged scene is a portion of the Sannio-Matese mountainous area (Southern Italy). Suitable interferometric couples are processed and analyzed in order to show potentialities of detecting surface deformation by means of DIFSAR data, and derive qualitative information on the relationship between DIFSAR-based change detection and the time scale of crustal dynamics, by investigating the effectiveness of the technique as function of the scene coherence. Preliminary result confirm the feasability of the technique, even the cost of sophisticated processing and careful error analysis. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, the potential of L-band repeat-pass differential synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry for land subsidence monitoring is evaluated using Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS) SAR data. Bologna, Mexico City, and the Ruhrgebiet are selected as application sites representing slow to fast deformation velocities. The investigation includes feasibility aspects such as data availability, the temporal decorrelation over different landcover classes and the range of useful spatial baselines, an analysis of the achieved deformation accuracy, and considerations on the complementarity to European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS) SAR interferometry and leveling surveys. In spite of the rather limited data availability, land subsidence maps could be generated for the three selected application sites. In contrast to ERS C-band SAR data, JERS L-band interferometry permitted the retrieval of subsidence values over vegetated areas and forest when using interferograms of less than one year acquisition time interval and short baseline. In addition, the longer L-band wavelength was found to be superior in the case of large deformation gradients that lead to phase-unwrapping problems in C-band interferometry. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne differential radar interferometry has proven a remarkable potential for mapping ground deformation phenomena (e.g., urban subsidence, volcano dynamics, coseismic and postseismic displacements along faults, as well as slope instability). However, a full operational capability has not been achieved yet due to atmospheric disturbances and phase decorrelation phenomena. These drawbacks can often beat least partially- overcome by carrying out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to natural or artificial stable reflectors [permanent scatterers (PS)] and exploiting long temporal series of interferometric data. This approach allows one to push the measurement precision very close to its theoretical limit (in the order of ~1 mm for Cband European Remote Sensing (ERS)like sensors). In this paper, the detection of both timeuniform and seasonal deformation phenomena is addressed, and a first assessment of the precision achievable by means of the PS Technique is discussed. Results highlighting deformation phenomena occurring in two test sites in California are reported (Fremont in the Southern Bay Area and San Jose in the Santa Clara Valley). [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) technique has proved its capability to detect small surface deformations in several types of applications. In this paper, its use as a quantitative subsidence monitoring tool is addressed to. A complete procedure is described, giving emphasis to the algorithms that have a major impact on the quality of the DInSAR results : the calibration of the InSAR geometry based on ground control points, which guarantees a high accuracy of the InSAR geometric model ; a filtering procedure suitable to reduce the atmospheric effects in small-scale subsidences; and a data fusion procedure for multiple observations, which represents a key step to improve the quality of the DInSAR products. The procedure was used in the analysis of a small-scale urban subsidence located in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The validation of the results, which was based on the comparison with precise and independent reference data, is discussed in detail.
