This paper presents a simulation study to investigate whether spaceborne submillimeter radiometric observations, which can be realized with fairly high spatial resolution, are able to derive the vertical structure of the atmospheric wet delay. The accuracy of the retrieved zenith wet delay (ZWD) trend as a function of surface height is assessed in order to correct the associated height dependence of the interferometric phase error in a SAR interferogram. Using a simulated benchmark, we evaluate the errors associated with the use of both a linear and an exponential model of the behavior of ZWD as a function of the surface height. This paper shows a fairly accurate reconstruction of the trend parameters estimated from radiometer brightness temperature images, with respect to realistic atmospheric profiles provided by radiosounding observations (RAOBs). The trend parameters that we consider in this paper are the slope K for the linear model and scale height H for the exponential one. An overall better accuracy is found for the exponential model, which is more representative of the actual behavior of ZWD with height, resulting in a residual uncertainty in the path delay due to the atmospheric stratification of approximately 0.2-0.3 cm and nearly zero bias, as compared to RAOBs. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) The quantitative study of the arid Lop Nur lake basin is significant to investigate the environmental changes in the arid area of northwestern China and extremely arid areas of Eurasia in general. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, with its penetration capability and advantages for studying geological phenomena on a large spatial scale, is very suitable for analyzing the subsurface of the Lop Nur area. Based on the full polarimetric ALOS PALSAR data and field investigation, it was found that the two-layer scattering mechanism of the dry sediments is very special and complex. The scattering mechanism in the bright strips is more complex than that in the gray strips according to the co-polarization correlation analysis. The experimental results show that the Cloude–Pottier decomposition method is more appropriate for this area. Moreover, the polarimetric characteristics and Cloude-Pottier decomposition results are very important for the study of the past climatic change in Lop Nur area. In conclusion, full polarimetric SAR data and target decomposition theory provide a new technique for obtaining information and quantitatively studying the subsurface characteristics of arid areas. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Determining the Earth's surface topography and deformation with interferometric synthetic aperture radar involves measurement of phase, which, for a typical coherent radar signal, can only be done modulo 2?. The cycle of ambiguity inherent in the phase measurement has to be unwrapped over all observation dimensions (e.g., azimuth, range, and time) to remove the 2? ambiguity of the phase measurements. For a time series of SAR images, useful for reducing noise in topographic applications or measuring time-varying surface deformation, the necessary steps to connect ambiguous radar phase measurements are more challenging, and the operation may be termed 3-D phase unwrapping. We describe a 3-D unwrapping approach using an extended Kalman filter. Our approach readily exploits existing information, and is robust in the presence of noise. For all tested data sets, it provides improved accuracy compared to existing approaches. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Fully polarimetric L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter was collected using NASA's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) SAR and regressed with in situ measure-ments of basal area (BA) and above ground biomass (AGB) of mature Loblolly pine stands in North Carolina. Results found HH polarization consistently displayed the lowest correlations where HV andVV exhibited the highest correlations in all groups for both BA and AGB. When plantation stands were analyzed separately (plantation versus natural), correlation improved significantly for both BA (R2 = 0.65, hv) and AGB (R2 = 0.66, vv). Similarly, results improved when natural stands were analyzed separately resulting in the highest correlation for AGB (R2 = 0.63, HV and VV). Data decomposition using the Freeman 3-component model indicated that the relative low correlations were due to the saturation of the L-band backscatter across the majority of the study area.
